2CALL FOR PROPOSALS

CONTEXTA new complex dedicated to dance, the Wilder Building, is home to four major institutions in the art: Agora de la danse, École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, Tangente and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. The first three will launch new seasons in February 2017 in the new building. Les Grands Ballets will open its space in May 2017, leading up to a grand official inauguration of the renovated and expanded building in September 2017.

The east side façade of the Wilder Building, facing Place des Festivals, gives the Quartier des Spectacles a new projection surface, unique among its peers for its portrait orientation and its glass surface on which an opaque serigraph has been applied in order to maximize the surface’s luminosity and image clarity (photo and technical specifications in Appendix A).

For this project, the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and the resident organizations of the Wilder Building invite creators of all disciplines, residing in Canada, to submit artistic proposals.

CRITERIAThe project will lead to the creation of a video projection designed specifically to celebrate the Wilder Building’s focus on dance.

The work should:

• Highlight the body in motion

• Evoke the strength and fragility of the human body

• Feature a diversity of bodies (types and ages) and a figurative approach (in which bodies are recognizable)

• Make use of the screen’s monumental “portrait” surface to highlight larger-than-life bodies

• Suggest the diversity of current dance in an original manner, by including both contemporary movements and ballet

• Be able to capture the attention and appeal to the emotions of the general public

• Stand out for the high quality of its underlying artistic approach

• Include a copyright-cleared musical soundtrack. The work should nevertheless be able to stand alone without the soundtrack, without losing its appeal or aesthetic integrity

• Make optimal use of the video projection surface and its position overlooking the Place des Festivals, ensuring that the public has a powerful, innovative aesthetic experience

• Be an original work, created specifically for the Quartier des Spectacles and the Wilder Building video projection surface

• Have a duration of at least 5 minutes.

3. CONCEPTION3.1. Projection surface

* Download the pixel map by using this link.

A white serigraphic pattern is applied to the glass façade of the building. This pattern optimizes the projection. Thus, the entire surface can be projected on. Do not consider this pattern when creating content.

3.2. Resolution, audio and video format - Playback

The native resolution of the projection surface is 3688 x 3468. The resolution of the artwork may be less, however, it must conform to the ratio at all times. Video files must be in QuickTime format. Please refer to the table below for the correct export settings.

Video Format QuickTime (.mov) Accepted codecs None / Animation / PhotoJPEG / Pro-Res Colours Millions ou Millions+ (alpha) Horizontal Resolution Multiple of 8 compulsory Vertical Resolution Multiple of 2 compulsory Frame-rate 30 fps Audio Format WAV / AIFF / MP3 Sampling 48kHz / 24 bit Normalization 0dB

3.3. Video resolution and format – Live Input

Different options are possible, to be discussed with the technology team of QDS. However, a frame-rate of 60 fps is mandatory to guarantee fluidity while streaming to the capture card. (See section 2)

3.4. Masks

A mask covering the windows and certain architectural details of the building is integrated in the servers to avoid any light reflecting off of the windows and, above all, to keep the projection from reaching the interior of the building (light intrusion), the latter possibly disturbing the occupants. * IMPORTANT: The mask provided is only a reference point and should not be included in the final export. Remove it once your video is complete and before exportation. The mask will be automatically applied by the video servers.

3.5. Hard Drive formatting

If you choose to submit your artwork and files on a hard drive, it is mandatory to have it NTFS formatted.
