Call for Submissions Obsidian Theatre 2017-18 Playwrights Unit We are now accepting applications for our 2017-2018 Playwrights Unit. We are looking for playwrights and creative collectives who identify as members of the African Diaspora to apply for our next season’s playwrights unit. The Playwrights Unit is an intensive yearlong process that runs from September 2017 to June 2018. Through monthly meetings with the group and individual guidance to serve each artists’ needs, artists delve into the creation process in a supportive and nurturing environment that challenges themselves to investigate their writing process. The Unit has an emphasis on professional development and the business of being a professional artist in Canada. Call for Submissions Obsidian Theatre 2017-18 Playwrights Unit We are now accepting applications for our 2017-2018 Playwrights Unit. We are looking for playwrights and creative collectives who identify as members of the African Diaspora to apply for our next season’s playwrights unit. The Playwrights Unit is an intensive yearlong process that runs from September 2017 to June 2018. For Playwrights:

1. Letter of Intent (2 pages maximum) - Letter introducing yourself and your work. Your letter may answer some of the following questions:

a. Why do you write for theatre? What experience do you have in play creation? Why do you want to work with Obsidian Theatre? What are your goals or expectations upon entering in to a playwrights unit? Describe your artistic practice?

2. Writing Sample (15 pages maximum) - A sample of your writing/artistic practice that best represents your voice as

a writer. This can include: Excerpt of a current new play, poetry, prose writing, a collection of excerpts from different works.

3. Theatre/Artistic Resume and Bio

Include relevant previous experience that has prepared you to be in an intensive writers unit.

For Creator/Performers:

1. Letter of Intent (2 pages maximum) - Letter introducing yourself and your work. Your letter may answer some of the following questions:

Why do you create theatre? What experience do you have in play creation? Why do you want to work with Obsidian Theatre? What are your goals or expectations upon entering in to a playwrights unit?

2. Artistic Practice (1 pages maximum) How do you go about creating performances? Do you have a physical artistic practice? Describe the type of theatre that you want to create?

3. Sample of Work (if applicable) Include samples of your work in the format that best suits your work. Choose 1 of the following options. Writing – 15 pages maximum Video/audio – 2-3 minutes maximum Images – maximum of 10 images

Applications are due June 30th by Midnight How to Apply

• Format your entire application (including the writing sample) into ONE .pdf file • Include links to any video or images that you would like included in your application.
