We’re proud to welcome you to the CSUN campus and the beautiful theater that proudly bears its new name this season — The Soraya. The leadership and generosity of the Younes and Soraya Nazarian family is a gift that uplifts us all, standing as testament to our shared values:
First, that arts and education, hand in hand, shape the future of Los Angeles.
Our shared future starts right here at CSUN with our student body, and creativity will be a key component of its success. CSUN prepares thousands of students for the lm, television, and music industries and equally inspires the innovative spirits of aspiring engineers, educators, and business leaders.
Second, that the arts are most impactful when they reach the broadest audience.
Soraya Nazarian herself is a sculptor whose works grace libraries, hospitals, and schools worldwide, free for all to view. This beautiful Center for the Performing Arts that now bears her name places accessibility and inclusion center stage, with a robust arts education program, seven dierent performance series, and its signature oering of international artists presented under the banner Music Knows No Borders.
The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts — our new name honors a visionary gift made with an eye to the future, an endowment that ensures that these values have a home on the CSUN campus and in this world-class facility for countless seasons to come.
With artists from 18 nations in seven dierent series, The Soraya proudly stands at the forefront of diversity and innovation in the arts.
If there were a single performance exemplifying that spirit, it might be the Silkroad Ensemble, known for converging cultures and genre-busting brilliance. But that’s just one of many this season. The rst authorized tribute to Mexican mega-star Juan Gabriel, a new violin concerto from Danny Elfman, jazz that crossed the Caribbean from Cuba, a fresh look at the founding fathers in a new version of the musical 1776, an evening of dance dedicated to the women’s movement by the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company — these are the performances that dene our 2018–19 season.
There’s no shortage of good-hearted fun too, including a century of Hollywood classics: for cinephiles, the 1925 horror classic The Phantom of the Opera with live orchestra; for the young and young at heart, Disney’s Silly Symphony; for fans of song and dance, Singin’ in the Rain the Broadway musical; for those who love to whistle a familiar tune, two concerts featuring lm composers Hal Arlen and Henry Mancini.
Welcome to the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts. With our new name, we extend a broader embrace, both onstage and in the auditorium.

Sat September 29, 2018 | 8PMAida Cuevas Totalmente Juan Gabriel With Mariachi Juvenil TecalitlánCSUN Symphony
Mexico lost its most inuential musician in 2016.With over 1,000 songs to his credit, Juan Gabriel was his nation’s prince of pop and champion of traditional music. Los Angeles Times remembered the beloved singer who “wooed crowds on both sides of the border with ballads of love and heartbreak.”
Aida Cuevas, “Queen of Ranchera,” sang at his memorial as the nation mourned his loss. At The Soraya, the U.S. premiere of her recent tribute album, Totalmente Juan Gabriel, Vol. II, pays tribute to their friendship with a full orchestra — our very own CSUN Symphony — as well as the Mexico City-based mariachi band, Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán.
