In 1846, Mexico and the United States of America fought a war over their border.

7. The United States won the Mexican-American War, and in 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 8. Bridget Mason

Bridget Mason was a slave.

9. In 1851 her slave owner took her to California. 10. Mason petitioned for her freedom andwon. 11. Mary Tape

Mary Tape was a Chinese immigrant.

12. Since her daughter was Chinese, she was not allowed to go to public school. 13. Because of her effort, a school was created for Chinese and Asian. 14. The Gold Rush and 49ers

Life as a Forty- Niner was hard.

15. It was slow, boring, and dangerous. 16. When panning, a miner stood bent over in a cold stream all day. 17. Levi Strauss

One entrepreneur was named Levi Strauss.

18. Strauss saw that miners needed tough work pants for mining gold. 19. His pants are still popular. 20. Sam Brannan

Sam Brannan was a person who started a new business with the hopes of making money.

21. Brannan ran through the streets of San Francisco carrying a bottle of gold dust. 22. James Beckworth

In the 1850s, James Beckworth led settlers through a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada that was later named for him.

23. John Fremont

John C. Fremont traveled all over the area making maps for the United States government in the early 1840s.

24. He was an African American guide who led settlers west during the 1850s. 25. Jedediah Smith

In 1826 Jedediah Smith led the first group of American trappers who came overland to California through the Utah and Mojave Deserts.

26. John Bidwell

In 1841 John Bidwell left Independence, Missouri, for California.

27. John Sutter

John Sutterwas a pioneer.

28. In 1841, Sutter had a fort that was known as Sutter's Fort. 29. It was located where Sacramento and American Rivers meet. 30. Ivan Kuskov

In 1812, Ivan Kuskov led a group of Russian and native Alaskan fur trappers to a place north of San Fransisco.

A mission is a settlement set up by a religious group to teach their religion and other ways of life to native people.

32. The first mission was started in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra. 33. Presidios

A presidio is a Spanish word for fort.

34. Each presidio was home to soldiers who defended missions and keep Russians out. 35. Presidios also became centers for trade. 36. The Valley Region

The valley region is one of the best farming area's.

37. It has rich soil for growing crops. 38. The valley region has many fruits and veggies like grapes,tomatoes, and lettuce. 39. The Coast Region

The Coast Region is a long land along the ocean.

40. This shoreline is called the Pacific coast because it lies next to the pacific ocean. 41. The Desert Region

The Desert Region is a dry area that gets less than 10 inches of rain each year.

42. There are animals such as snakes, lizards, and coyotes. 43. The Mountain Region

The Mountain Region hasmild summers and cool winters.

James Cook grew up in Britain and was a curious student.

46. Cook became a well known sailor, explorer, and mapmaker. 47. Cook joined Britain's Royal Navy. 48. Sebastian Vizcaino

In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino explored the area from present-day San Diego to present-day Monterey.

49. He made some maps of the coast that were used by other explorers until the 1700's. 50. Christopher Columbus

During the 1400s, European researchers were trying find a eastward sea route to the Indies so the Europeans could purchase spices and silk.

51. Juan Cabrillo

In 1542 Juan Cabrillo sailed northfrom what is now known as Mexico to explore the route to Asia.

52. Cabrillo explored San Diego, San Miguel island, and Cape San Martin. 53. FatherSerra

Father Junipero sera started the mission at San Diego in 1769.

54. He wanted Indians to be roaman catholic. 55. One of the missions were San Antonio de Padua. 56. Gaspared de Portola

In 1767 Spain sent a soldier named Gaspar de Portola to run its California colony.

57. Portola led an expedition to explore the area near present-day Monterey.
