• the first gold seekers arrived in California on January 24th , 1848

• In one year California's population grew from 15,000 to 100,000

• By the end of the 1800’s California had a population of 380,000

• During 1870, san Francisco's population had surged past 150,000

• By 2011, more than 800,000 people were living in san Francisco

VIOLENCE AND TROUBLES

• The gold rush made violence common between prospectors and Indians

• Travelers were given no established land rules, this means that the first to arrive had the most chance of success

• Gambling, alcohol, and murder were common in mining camps

• Many miners used gambling and spent all of their newly earned money without thinking

• The California gold rush left countless miners financially ruined or even dead
