Welcome to the 45th California Cup Field Hockey Tournament. We want to thank every team who attends, each player who plays, every parent who cheers, and every coach, manager, referee, volunteer, medic, spectator and vendor who supports. Truly, without your efforts and support this event would not be a reality. In return, we will all see great field hockey and exciting matches, meet new people, connect with old friends, enjoy the beautiful Southern California weather and maybe finally get to say, “I’m going to Disneyland!”
While we value all of our volunteers, the organizing committee is an exceptionally dedicated group of people. They will be wearing red shirts or jackets during the tournament and, if you are so inclined, when you see one of them, please say thank you. Some of our volunteers have been helping for 45 years; I won’t mention names, you know who you are. I will, however, mention by name the volunteers who have been helping the tournament for many years: Silvia Scally, Simon Walshaw, Dave Jackson, Joan Cicchi, Tom Harris, Patti Niccum, Phil Schofield, Rob Stevens, Leslie Warren, Bob Fleming, Mark Niccum, Dave Harris, Marc Bakerman, Karen Hayashi, Sergio Centeno, Saleem Aaron, Mano Aaron, Eric Bruton, Sal LaSala, Jan Stanke, Katie Moulder, Jyoti Aaron, Joan Barminski, Beverley Kornder, Louise Jandura, Chris Januszewski, Marissa Loo, Janice Mohr, and (saving the best for last) Coralie Van Marken. This kind of dedication would make any organization proud. Also, we are very grateful and lucky to be associated with Moorpark College and their wonderful staff and pupils who assist us with the California Cup tournament. We strive each year to put on the best, most fun, and fairest tournament possible. As in life, sometimes things happen, when they do, rest assured that we are doing our best to make it right. Please treat each other with respect, follow the rules, and have fun.Enjoy,Mike Barminski, Chairman 45th Annual California Cup Field Hockey Tournament

Luis Pablo Sanchez–President of Moorpark College
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Moorpark College! We are delighted to host the Cal Cup International Field Hockey Tournament once again, and we hope that you will take time to tour our beautiful campus while you are with us, including our nationally-renowned training zoo.
We are very proud of being cited as the fourth best community college in the nation by the Huffington Post in March of 2015. Moorpark College is serenely located in the beautiful hills of Ventura County, forty miles from UCLA and seventy-five miles from UC Santa Barbara. Our students enjoy a high-quality education and excellent support services at a low cost before transferring to prominent universities to complete the rest of their studies. We pride ourselves on taking great care of all students who come to our campus. Our culture particularly embraces international students so that they do not
feel alone or isolated when they arrive at our campus. I host monthly receptions in my office with our international students, and maintain Open Door Hours each week, when any student may visit me without an appointment. Our International Student Coordinator, Ms. Stacey Chen, is committed to helping all of our international students with any challenges they have in transitioning to a happy and successful experience at our college.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about our programs, or if you wish to support the Moorpark College Foundation which provides scholarships to resident as well as international students, please contact Dr. Jesus Vega in our Outreach office at (805) 378-1409, or via email at [email protected], or simply visit our website at www.moorparkcollege.edu. We would love to hear from you!

Dear Cal Cup participants,
Congratulations on being part of the 2016 Cal Cup, a tournament that is internationally renowned and with deep heritage in the story of field hockey in the USA. The Cal Cup provides opportunities that are important in supporting the men’s game, as well as the game for all and I wish all of you a wonderful hockey time as you come together to compete and celebrate the sport.
As you compete, over in Toronto our Men’s Junior National Team will be competing in the Junior Pan American Championship. These athletes have played in a number of Cal Cups and we wish them all the best in competition. Later this summer, our Women’s National Team have the honor competing in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. We send our very best wishes to our teams who proudly represent our sport and our country.
USA Field Hockey is the National Governing Body for the sport of field hockey in the United States. This is what we are about: to Serve Members, Grow the Game, and Succeed Internationally. This is a simple statement that captures our purpose, and what we exist to do. We serve members by putting on valued programs, that generate a surplus income, which we invest in developmental activities to grow the game and in our national teams to help them succeed internationally.
First and foremost, we are a service organization, serving our members. As we continue to improve our programs and services we will have more resources available to us as a sport to invest in the other two strands of our mission (which cost money). Our development activities include coach education, umpire training and grassroots participation programs. Supporting our national teams includes ensuring that the systems are in place that are required to compete on the international stage, from the world’s best coaches, to top venues, international travel and more. It is a relatively straightforward proposition. The better we serve members, the more resources we generate; the more we invest in the sport, the better the sport is for more people.
Thank you to the Field Hockey Federation and the Cal Cup Organizing Committee for what I am sure will be another successful tournament and thank you to you for your support and enjoy hockey experiences at their finest at the 2016 Cal Cup.

It is an exciting time to be on the USA U21 Men’s National Team. As you read this we are competing in Toronto at the Pan American Championship. Our preparation included camps in the 2015 fall and the early spring of 2016. We also played a test series in Chula Vista against our friends from Canada. In March we were fortunate enough to spend 10 days in The Netherlands where we trained 8 times and played 5 matches vs Men’s teams. Combine this with the Strength and Conditioning program that the guys follow and you can be assured that these young men will represent the country well. As a coach it is great to see the opportunity CalCup provides for boys field hockey in the USA. All players currently competing in Canada played at the CalCup the past years. Enjoy CalCup 2016. GO USA!

Bulldogs Teammates Selected to US Men U21 Squad Quicksilver Cats Field Hockey Club
Sean Cicchi, George McGuigan, Trent Warren, Doug Allison and Ethan La Sala have been selected to the squad which will represent the US at the Jr. Pan Am games in Toronto. To prepare for the games they toured with the U21 squad to Holland in March and gained invaluable experience.
The squad was based near Amsterdam and played a series of games against local Dutch teams. Through a series of five games and intensive training, the team returned to the US feeling that they had made massive strides in the team’s development as they move closer to the Junior Men’s Pan American Championship in Toronto, Canada.
“Tours like this are of crucial importance for the development of this team and the overall program.” said Rutger Wiese, U-21 USMNT Head Coach. “This tour was a huge success.” said Chris Clements, U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach. “Elite level competition and immersion in one of the greatest hockey cultures in the world extends the players in every element.”
Team captain, Sean Cicchi, commented, “This was by far the best hockey this group of boys has ever showcased together.” George McGuigan agreed that the tour was a great experience. “It was great to play against established clubs and get a taste of European Field Hockey”. George commented also on one of the trip highlights which was to see the semi- finals of the European Hockey League. “The atmosphere was electric and the skill level immense.”
These young men now aim to take that experience and motivation to Canada. Keep an eye out on the results and remember that while we have a number of Bulldogs missing from Cal Cup, they will be gone for a pretty good reason.
Go U21 USMNT…Go Bulldogs!
Women’s Hockey at Cal CupDear California Cup Tournament Committee,
I just wanted to let you know how much of a tradition your tournament has become for the girls of the Quicksilver Cats Field hockey team. We are a club, located primarily from the Town of Los Gatos California. The team has been coming for over 22 years, and we have enjoyed each and every experience. I have personally enjoyed my time as a player, referee, and as a coach for the last 38 years!
The girls have used the Cal Cup experience to expand their knowledge of the game, and to bond as a team! The matches are always challenging and competitive. We have probably won as many matches as we have lost, but that never seems to faze the girls. The opportunity to watch the games at the highest level on the “Super Turf” are the highlight of the trip. Many of the girls have returned to the tournament, to play in the various women’s divisions provided.
On behalf of the coaching staff, the girls and their parents, we thank you in advance for all your hard work. You are all to be commended for the great things you do for the sport we all love so much!
Yours in hockey,
Quicksilver Cats Field Hockey Club

The Australian Mates4Mates ADF Men’s and Women’s Hockey Teams
Established in 1982, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Hockey Association is a hockey club that is dedicated to ensuring that members of the ADF can continue to play the greatest game of all once they volunteer to defend Australia and its interests. Hockey in the ADF has a long and rich history, with records and images of matches being played against British, Indian and Canadian team’s right back to the First World War.
The two teams competing in this year’s CALCUP are made up of members of all three services, (Army, Navy, Air force) and are veterans of the war on terror, border protection, peace making, and peace keeping in the South Pacific region.
The teams have made a commitment to raise funds for the veteran’s organisation “Mates 4Mates”. This organisation is dedicated to the support of physically and psychologically wounded veterans and their families. If you can, please help us in this endeavour.
This is the first tour of the United States for an ADF hockey team. The group is very excited by the prospect of some great hockey and some wonderful social experiences. We are looking forward to a great weekend!!
Australians and Americans have fought side by side for a century now, from the muddy fields of northern France in WW1, the Pacific in the Second war, Korea, Vietnam and now the Middle East, Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf. We are hoping to be invited to any Memorial Day activities that are taking place, in honour of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
We would like to thank the organisers and participants of CALCUP 2016, for allowing us to be part of what should be a great experience and a lifelong memory.
Scotty Downs Chef-de-mission ADF Hockey CALCUP Tour.

Cal Cup Guidelines
For all participants and supportersThe California Cup Tournament Organizing Committee prides itself in conducting a family event. Players of both genders, from many nations, 5 to 80 years of age enjoy these four days of hockey competition. Older players are role models for the youngsters and should set an example that shows our sport in the best light. In the interest of allowing everyone to have a good time, please observe these guidelines. Your cooperation will enhance the California Cup tournament and field hockey.1. Respect for the young players, their parents and the State Law dictates a policy of no drugs, smoking or alcohol (without permit) on the campus of either Moorpark College or other Cal Cup venues. Smoking is permitted in parking lots only. A sponsored Beer Garden, available to individuals who are 21 years or older, is located adjacent to the Super Divisions Field. Campus Police are required to confiscate any prohibited items found on the College Campus.2. Players, supporters, spectators or others who engage in inappropriate behavior on or off the playing fields, will have the circumstances reviewed by the California Cup Disciplinary Committee. It is expected the decision of this committee will be supported by the Campus Police if necessary.3. Parking is permitted on Campus only in authorized areas.4. No campers are to be parked on campus overnight. Directions to Oak Park will be provided to potential campers. A campground is located three miles from the college on Los Angeles Avenue between Moorpark and Simi Valley.5. No drugs or alcohol are permitted on campus.6. No animals are allowed on campus, including dogs (VCCCD Gov Board Policy 3503). Violators of this regulation will be required to leave the campus and will not be allowed to return until they have removed their dogs from the campus, including the parking lots. This applies to all tournament participants, spectators, organizers, friends of the Field Hockey Federation and vendors. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE and the Field Hockey Organizing Committee is expected to assist with the enforcement of this regulation.7. Participants are expected to pick up after themselves and use trash containers.8. Parking next to the Super field is to be done at the risk of the vehicle owner.9. Our printed schedules are accurate and up to date when they are printed; however they must be viewed as tentative as conditions may change.10. Please enjoy the tournament and good luck in the competition.

Lifetime Achievement Award
David HarrisWe are proud to honor David Harris as a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
In the days when hockey goal keepers played with only cricket pads, toe-breaking kickers and no protection above the waist, David Harris started enjoying games as a field hockey player, participating in the local FHF league, many California Cup tournaments, and National Sport Festivals. In 1976, David began his umpiring career officiating local California juniors, CalCup tournaments and was later selected to umpire in Canada, Germany, Holland and the Pan Am games. As a coach, David has managed boy youth teams and has coordinated trips to Canada, Mexico, and Europe while supporting the international hockey careers of his sons, Patrick and Sean.
David has been a key figure in the development of the Moorpark College Hockey Center. He has given many valuable hours of his life to help and dedicate his experience in the construction of the Players/Officials structure and new scoreboard at the turf field, the construction of the Office/Snack Bar Building, and the Restroom building. After participating in the CalCup tournament as a player, a Super Divisions Coordinator, Director of Venue, and since 2009 as the Manager for the Super Divisions, David will be stepping down but plans to continue his support of field hockey by teaching and guiding a new generation of players. “I think I will be involved in hockey until the Lord calls me home,” notes David. The Field Hockey Federation and the California Cup Organizing Committee wish to thank “Dave” Harris for his years of qualified support for the development of field hockey in Southern California.

Ross Rutledge joined the national field hockey program in the early 1980s and played for thirteen years. He competed at the highest level of international field hockey. His career included 3 Pan American Games (Gold in 1983) and 2 Olympic Games (1984, Los Angeles, 1988, Seoul). As a result of Ross’ leadership skills, he was made Canada’s team captain from 1987 – 1991. He has been described by his peers and coaches as the best center forward and finest goal scorer Canadian field hockey ever produced. Those who have had the opportunity to watch Ross direct his Millionaires to the top of the awards podium year after year can reflect upon his talent as a hockey athlete.
After his career as a player, Ross became a level 4 NCCP coach and guided senior men’s and women’s teams throughout BC. Sadly, Ross passed away in April 2004 at the age of 41.
The California Cup Organizing Committee (CCOC) established the Ross Rutledge Award in 2006, awarded annually to the highest goal scorer in the Super Divisions at the California Cup, to acknowledge the accomplishments of each year’s top goal scorer in memory of the most prolific goal scorer in California Cup history.
The winner of the annual Ross Rutledge award is immortalized with his or her name engraved on a permanent cap stone installed on the masonry wall on the side of the field at the Tournament site.

George Waterman Sportsman of The Year – Lindsay CoonyFor people who have seen (and heard) Lindsay Coony on the field, it’s hard to imagine the game of hockey without her. Her presence is not confined to the goal cage that she has tended for over 20 years. She made her start in middle
school with the sport her dad had also played. In high school, she played for the competitive Torrey Pines team and honed her skills at Futures. Lindsay then went on to play for Bates College, where she racked up a career 224 saves and a .821 save percentage. In grad school, she started every game for the UC Santa Barbara club and carried them to a WCFHC Championship title.Post-college life was missing something, as Lindsay wanted to continue playing the sport she loves. She sought out the FHF league in Moorpark. When the league experienced a goalie shortage, she stepped up to help. Now it’s just not a typical Sunday without Lindsay playing in at least 3 games. Lindsay’s dedication to the sport led her to start the Oh Yeah! Field Hockey Club, helping to grow the women’s division, and bringing together players from northern and southern California, Canada and the Netherlands. She has made some of her greatest friends through field hockey, and they can attest to how much she loves the game.
Presidents Award – Joan CicchiJoan Cicchi has served the FHF as Treasurer since before many of us can remember (2007). Under her leadership our financial state has gone from the “paycheck to paycheck” style to one where we have met our funding goals for our field replacement and have sufficient reserves to cover surprises. Joan has instilled
a budgetary discipline that has FHF in a secure financial position. Joan is also our Parliamentarian and has served to develop our bylaws and our constitution. Joan is a loyal Bulldog and CalCup committee member and supports those groups the same way. Joan and Mike Cicchi have three children, Meghan, Brendan and Sean. Meghan played field hockey at Lafayette and Sean is currently a member of the US Men’s National team and the U21 team. Joan has done so much over the years that she is being replaced by two people. While she is retiring from FHF we still expect to see her at the field supporting her field hockey family.
Presidents Award – Marisa LooMarisa Loo has served FHF and the membership in a variety of ways for many years. Marisa is currently serving as a Director for FHF as Women’s Coordinator, and she is also helping with our marketing efforts. You can say hello to her as she works the technical desk for the supers during
CalCup 2016. Marisa has dedicated much of her time with us as a coach. She is coaching Futures, Ventura County Red Devils and for Moorpark. She was kind enough to volunteer to help coach our local kids in preparation for their trip to Pennsylvania for the National Futures Championship. Marisa has also been the go-to person for coordinating our events with visiting Australian or English teams. Previously Marisa was the coach at Chaminade high school. Today she plays for the Jolie Pitts in our D1 Women’s division, and she played in college at Brown University. Prior to playing at Brown, Marisa traveled to Australia with the futures elite team and played for the Camarillo Cougars. Marisa will begin a Masters program at Ball State in the fall.
Male Athlete of the Year – Robert StephensCongratulations to Robert Stephens on being selected Male Athlete of the Year! Robert is a previous winner of the Promising Young Umpire award. Robert is a very dedicated athlete is being recognized for his leadership and his
efforts on and off the field. Robert is playing in our U18 boys division and in the D1 Men’s division. He is also coaching one of the Moorpark U14 boys teams. Robert is a member of our Ventura County Red Devils high performance group and was a 2014 Junior National team member. He recently travelled to Philadelphia to play against our friends from the East Coast. When he is not playing or coaching or practicing, Robert is a Cross Country runner and Distance Track athlete for Moorpark High School. He recently ran a sub 5 minute mile. Robert is also a dedicated volunteer outside of Field Hockey, he is a long time scout who is pursuing his Eagle Scout award this year. Thank you Robert for your dedication and service to Field Hockey!
Coach of the Year – Binh HoangBinh grew up in Moorpark and Westlake Village, and started playing field hockey at a young age for the Conejo Bulldogs with the his two older brothers. Binh is known as a prolific goal scorer and is a former member of the USA National Team where he represented
the USA at the 2007 Pan American Games and 2001 World Cup qualifying tournament. Hockey has always been a family affair for Binh; over 4 years ago he started coaching his nieces, and now he coaches his daughters. Binh has been the Bulldogs U14 and U17 girls teams coach ever since then and has coached his teams in numerous Cal Cups, Hockey Festivals and various college tournaments. By sharing his extensive hockey knowledge Binh has helped to send many of his players onto the next level to play in college. Juggling a new born son, coaching, playing and also recently opening Q Sushi in Westlake Village, Binh manages to bring his enthusiasm to everything he does. The FHF would like to thank Binh for his many years of service to the hockey community and also wish him good luck with all of his endeavors.
Coach of the Year – Samantha McPhersonSam McPherson is no stranger to playing field hockey, Sam started playing in the FHF league at age 13 and has played for various clubs within the league including the Roadrunners, Camarillo Cougars and the Monarcas before going off to play Division 1
field hockey for Dartmouth. Upon her graduation Sam returned home and is currently volunteering as a coach for the Ventura Roadrunners youth teams and the Futures Program. Sam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with her that she gained playing on the East Coast at the highest collegiate level, being a local and growing up playing in the league she can relate to the players she coaches and effectively brings out the best in them. Sam is currently playing for the Jolie Pitts in our D1 Women’s division. She is a previous FHF award winner as the Female Athlete of the year in 2009. The FHF would like to thank Sam for her dedication to the sport and her contributions as both a player and coach.
Alex Stamatovic Volunteer of the Year – Kim WhiteheadKim Whitehead is a relative newcomer to the FHF, but she has immersed herself in making things better for us all since before she began as Director of Facilities. Kim sees things that need to be done and does them. This summer
she noticed that our snack shack was getting a little worn down and she pulled everything out and repainted and reorganized. Kim was elected as Director of Facilities this fall and has given countless hours of her time (and Blake’s time) getting our gear organized and cleaned up. All of our goals have been repaired and organized. By now Kim will have spent many hours sewing up the seams on the Super field with Janice Mohr. Please thank Kim for all of her back-breaking work and her commitment to the league and the membership. In addition to supporting her hockey family, Kim is a sports mom and very passionate about supporting her own children. Her son Blake plays waterpolo at Royal High school and for the Sharks WaterPolo Club. Her Daughter, Ashley, played soccer at Buena High school and Ventura College before transferring to CLU. Her son R.J. swam and played waterpolo for Buena HS, he’s currently serving in the US Navy based in Honolulu Hawaii. On behalf of the FHF I would like to thank Kim for her service and congratulate her on being Volunteer of the Year.
Most Promising Young Umpire – Evan HrychykCongratulations Evan Hrychyk for your selection as this year’s Most Promising Young Umpire. The league appreciates your service. At age 11 Evan started playing field hockey for Chaparral Middle School at a local Middle School tournament.
Soon after his first tournament, Evan began playing for the Moorpark Coyotes Club and at the age of 14 began umpiring. He recently helped coach and umpire at an Elementary School tournament, similar to the tournament that introduced him to field hockey. Not everyone is cut out to be an umpire, dealing with stressful situations and the need to maintain close focus and control of the game, Evan seems to manage all of this so effortlessly, always with a smile and never losing his composure. He is a reliable umpire and is always willing to help cover when other umpires can’t make their games. Evan has also showcased his umpiring services at the National Hockey Festival. In addition to umpiring, Evan is also a top player, he is part of the local high performance group, the Ventura County Red Devils. He played in our series against the East Coast in Chula Vista in the beginning of this year. When Evan is not playing or umpiring he can be found running track for Moorpark High School, and he is also an Eagle Scout candidate who hopes to finish his Eagle project this year. Thank you Evan for your service to the League and to the community!of the year.
Female Athletes of the Year Iliana Cabral and Hannah SchofieldCongratulations to Iliana Cabral and Hannah Schofield for their selection as Female Athletes of the Year for 2016! Ili and Hannah are the latest in
a line of players from Ventura County to take their love of Field Hockey to the college ranks. Ili has given her verbal commitment to Yale and Hannah has given her verbal commitment to Stanford. Both are very strong academically and they are leaders on and off the field. They are both highly motivated players and they practice or play 6 days per week. Both play in our U18 boys division and they find the competition and the level of play to be very challenging and great preparation for the speed of the game they will face in the coming years. They have both been travelling most of the Spring to the Level 1 Futures in Chula Vista and the college tournaments up North. When Ili is not playing hockey, she can be found playing soccer for La Reina High School. Hannah runs Cross Country and Track at Moorpark High School. Neither High School offers Field Hockey. Both Ili and Hannah were recruited into the FHF through our Middle School program. We are very proud of you girls and we look forward to seeing you play at the next level.
The cost is $45 per clinic, attend both clinics for $80. All youth players and goal keepers of all ages and skill levels are welcome.
Forms will be posted at www.calcup.comFor more info please contact Coralie van Marken at

Tournament Grass Rules
c. Team managers/captains will select five players from their respective teams. Only players on the teams approved roster, excluding any player(s) who has been ejected (red card) by either the umpire or suspended by Tournament Officials, shall be eligible to take the strokes. The order in which they will be taking the first series of strokes will be made known by the managers or captains to the Umpires or Tournament Officials prior to the start of the penalty stroke competition.
d. Each team shall alternately take penalty strokes against one and the same goalkeeper of the other team until a total of five strokes from each teams have been taken. The player replacing the goalkeeper may continue to take the penalty strokes but, when required to defend penalty strokes, must wear protective headgear. This player may also wear other approved goalkeeper equipment.
f. If the score is tied after the first round, a “Sudden Victory” series of five penalty strokes per round will take place using the same five players. The sequence does not need to be the same as in the previous round and the team manager/captain has the freedom of choice at the time of each stroke as to which of the five nominated players will take the stroke using all five nominated players per round. Tournament Grass Rules
f. from a free hit awarded to the attack within the 25 yards area, the ball must not be played into the circle until it has travelled at least 5 yards or has been touched by a player of the defending team
if the player taking the free hit continues to play the ball (ie no defending player has yet touched, it can be played into the circle by any other player including the player who took the free hit.
At an attacking free hit awarded within 5 yards of the circle, the ball cannot enter the circle until it has travelled at least 5 yards or it has been touched by a defending player. On this basis, defenders who are inside the circle within 5 yards of the free hit are therefore not interfering with play and may also shadow around the inside of the circle a player who takes a self-pass, provided that they do not play or attempt to play the ball or influence play until it has either travelled at least 5 yards or alternatively has been touched by a defending player who can legitimately play the ball.
Players inside or outside the circle who were 5 yards or more from the point of the free hit at its award are not allowed to move to and then remain in a stationary position within 5 yards of the ball as the free hit is taken.
Other than indicated above, any playing of the ball, attempting to play the ball or interference by a defender or an attacker who was not 5 yards from the ball, should be penalised accordingly.
Following a time stoppage after the award of an attacking free hit inside the 25 yards area, upon the re-start all players other than the player taking the free hit must be at least 5 yards from the ball.
It is permitted to play the ball high above the attacking circle so that it lands outside the circle subject to Rules related to dangerous play and that the ball is not legitimately playable inside or above the circle by another player during its flight.
21 Respect for Players, Officials, Playing Facilities and Equipment.
Please accord the courtesy and respect to all players, opponents and officials, as you would like to be treated, so everyone enjoys the tournament.
Help maintain the cleanliness of the beautiful facilities by putting trash, recyclable items in the appropriate containers.
No food or flavored drinks in glass containers or chewing gum is allowed in the Moorpark High School Stadium artificial pitch. Only water is allowed inside the stadium.
No dogs are allowed on any fields.

Letter from the FHF President – Phil Schofield
Welcome to Cal Cup 2016! I would like to thank you all for coming and I hope that you enjoy your visit to Ventura County. We are all working very hard to make Cal Cup the best possible experience. Our group of dedicated volunteers has been planning and working tirelessly for many months to get ready for this weekend. Thanks also to USA field hockey for their continued support, we are pleased to be a sanctioned event. The rains from our winter and spring helped mitigate the water shortage, but we are still in a drought and we still need to conserve. We anticipate continuing to provide water for the tournament, and we feel fortunate to be able to do so. We play the rest of the year dry. The Field Hockey Federation is working to replace our turf with a Wet/
Dry variety over the summer 2016. We will continue playing Cal Cup on wet turf but will have the option to play year round on dry.FHF is prioritizing efforts to grow the sport locally in Ventura County with a focus on recruiting new players through our Middle and Elementary School tournaments which are held annually. Middle School recruiting was how I found my way into the sport in 1983 and how my family followed in 2011.California continues to support the development of Field Hockey in the US. In 2015 twelve (12) local girls participated in the Pennsylvania National Futures Championship. The RUSH field hockey club has continued their run of dominance in the national tournament circuit. Brian Schledorn has his club ranking up to #5 in the country, and has had great success in training his players to be ready to play in college. California women were also selected to play in the women’s junior national squad. Atherton’s Callie Goodman, San Diego’s Megan Rodgers and Vista’s Brynn Zorilla have been travelling the country to train with this squad. Megan Rodgers was also recognized as one of 10 high school players in the US to score 60 goals in 2015. All three of them have committed to play for Cal, Go Bears! The US Field Hockey U21 Men’s squad and the US Senior team continue to maintain an important contingent of our local Moorpark FHF league players. The Junior Team faced some tough Canadian competition in early 2016 in the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista; and have recently returned from a developmental trip to the Netherlands where they played a series of games against club teams who had National and Junior National team players. This series served to prepare the US U21 team for the Junior Pan Am games in Toronto from where they will return to compete in Cal Cup.FHF is committed to continue with the development of our youth teams too. Our local high performance boys have played several matches against our East Coast friends in Chula Vista and in Pennsylvania in April. We are looking to include more competition with Canadian clubs in the future.I would like to thank all the teams that have travelled so far to come and play with us! Your participation makes this tournament a success. I would also like to thank the Cal Cup Operating Committee and all the volunteers who have served countless hours toward making this tournament a go. Without YOU none of this would be possible.Phil Schofield – FHF President
