• Terminology differs between conventional anddigital instrument calibration.

• Traditionally in metrology the word calibrationmeans that the instrument under test is being

compared against more accurate instrumentand may include trimming or adjusting theinstrument to show again correct readings.

• In Field-bus terminology the word calibrationmeans that the instrument is being configuredor checked.

• This controversy creates lot of confusionwithin C & I field.

• The primary reason for calibrating is that eventhe best instruments drift and lose their abilityto give accurate measurements.

• Drift makes the calibration necessary.

• Environment conditions, elapsed time and typeof application can all affect the stability of aninstrument.

• Even instruments of the same manufacturer,type and range can show varyingperformance. One unit can be found to havegood stability, while another performsdifferently.

• To maintain the credibility of measurements,which directly affects the productivity of theprocess and the plant.

• To maintain the quality of process instruments

at a good-as-new level.

• Safety and environmental regulations.

• ISO9000, other quality systems andregulations (e.g. FDA).

• ISO9000 and ISO14000 can assist in guidingregular, systematic calibrations, whichproduces uniform quality and minimizes thenegative impacts on the environment.

• The main difference between a Field-bustransmitter and conventional transmitters isthat the output signal is a fully digital Field-bus signal.

• Changing the output signal does not changethe need for periodic calibration.

• Although modern Field-bus transmittershave been improved compared to oldertransmitter models and some manufacturers

gives assurance of drift-free instruments, itdoes not eliminate the need for calibration.

• Calibrator is needed to measure (generate)input + a way to read the digital output

In year 2006 Beamex launched andintroduced the first revolutionary MC5 Field-bus Calibrator to the markets. It is still the onlyexisting product in this field.

The product is a combination of a multifunctionprocess calibrator and a Field-busconfigurator, which can be used with bothindustrial standards Foundation Field-bus H1and Profi-bus PA. It also houses HART

configuration and calibration facility.In 2009 the World’s first IS Field-bus Calibratorfor potentially explosive environments (IS) waslaunched with the same features as the non IS

version.

Instrument Calibration

Calibrating Field-bus transmitters sets highrequirements for the equipment to be used.

The transmitters are having a good accuracyof 0.025%of FS and the instrument to be usedin calibration must have preferably 5 timesgreater accuracy than the unit under test.

Beamex® MC5 Field-bus Calibrator canmanage this job well, the accuracy reachedstarting from0.005%FS both in field use or inthe workshop environment with a calibrationtest bench.
