Calgary Snowmobile Club – October 2016 Newsletter 1 CALGARY SNOWMOBILE CLUB Snow Trails & Tales October 2016 Vice President’s Report Welcome to the Calgary Snowmobile Club 2016/17 season. I hope everyone is as excited about the prospects of a 'La Nina' white winter as I am. This year my mission as VP is to continue supporting the key areas of interest that we have been turning focus to these last few years which include Expanding memberships, Supporting Safety, and advancing our reinvestment in our Cataract Riding system. I am really going to be pushing new member sign-ups this year as our value proposition is getting better and better. Specifically, our trail system at Cataract has seen significant improvement and our grooming capacity was bolstered this summer. Details to be provided by Scott and Glenn :) Additionally, the ASA sponsorship of 100 AST courses is a fantastic reason for non-members to give a club membership a try. My personal support for these items will range from trail clean up, encouraging people to join me in taking the AST 1 course and I also intend to coordinate some alternate rides at Cataract to occur at the same time as some of the bigger destination rides for those of us not able to make the trip. We are still lacking in the Executive roles of Public Relations and Secretary. If you or anyone else is interested in giving one of these roles a try then I encourage you to contact one of the serving members of the executive to discuss in this in more detail. Some may think they would not be as effective as someone else but please keep in mind that at this point the gaps are being addressed ad hoc by the rest of the executive as time permits so any assistance would enhance our position. Finally I would like to inform the membership that I ordered a few more Black Fruit of the Loom hoodies. The few left over from last year were not available in the larger sizes and I had one reorder to address a sizing issue from last year. If you have an interest in these items please let me know so that I am sure to bring enough product to our next meeting/ride/sled show. Pricing went up slightly this year but since we did not have to pay for the creation of the logo like last year the clubs overall price is much the same. Pricing starts at $45 for a regular non-zipped hoodie up to XL. Zippers add $7 and larger sizes have a $3 up charge attached. Please see the picture of the proof below to get a look if you haven't been able to see one in person at our meetings. Social Convener’s Report continued . . . It was a breezy but beautiful day. Gorgeous setting out in the country with a handful of campers setup for the night. We had a great turnout with 10 teams vying for the championship. Two pits were running side by side and the competition was fierce!

To change things up we did a 50/50 poker hand draw with the entry fees. The $50 winning hand went to Mike Hayward. There was tons of delicious food, snacks and desserts. Thanks to all that came out to participate and support the club.

Membership Coordinator’s Report Hi my name is Glen Gillis and I am your new Membership Coordinator for the club. I have been involved at a club level since 1984 with the Fort Saskatchewan Snow Angels and now I find myself becoming more involved with this club. I have been a director with the Alberta Snowmobile Association and was even the ASA president for 5 yrs. Going forward with my new role as the Membership guy I have a few good plans I would like to bring to this club. This year we are going out to the riders and will have club membership and trailpasses available at certain dealers and businesses around the Calgary area. I hoping this will increase our membership as well as Alberta trailpass holders.

Out of town riders will have a chance to support our trail system and get involved with the club. The Cataract Snow Vehicle Area is a great area and now that the club is involved with the stewardship of this area we need more funds to keep the area going. Out of town sales and in dealer sales is the way to go. This will also bring customers into dealers to purchase the trailpass/club membership and will be a good way to help dealers in these tough times by bringing riders into their doors. I'm looking forward to attending a few club rides and to continue to groom the trails as best we can. See you on the snow

Safety Search and Rescue’s Report Hey everyone! I hope you all had a good summer and a great thanksgiving. Hopefully you didn’t eat too much turkey! So, it’s that time of year again to start thinking about sleds! (Yay!) But it is also that time to get safety in your minds. Here is a great recent article on backcountry snowmobile safety from SnoRidersWest.com: http://snoriderswest.com/article/safety/the_conversation_no_backcountry_snowmobiler_wants_to_have_but_should

This is my first year as Safety Search and Rescue, so you all are going to have to bear with me as I try and fill the big boots of Mr. Kelm. I am looking forward to stepping up in this position and the more help from you guys, the better. We are all a part of the team. I am more than open to taking suggestions. I am probably going to make mistakes here and there. Learning curve. I hope some of you are taking advantage of what the ASA is offering. A paid AST course! Something that everyone should have or strive to get ASAP.

I would like to practice mock rescues a little more often with the groups. Or some suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated. I also have been researching the possibility of getting a satellite phone. Essentially the subscription is the same as our SPOT, but the phone itself is roughly $500. Which they have gone down greatly in price the past couple years. I plan on bringing up the satellite phone idea in the next meeting and look forward to what you have to say. I have some ideas kicking around in my head for the upcoming year and I shall share them later on. The biggest thing is to get safety in all of your minds. If we are going to have a better winter this year, (which we should, fingers crossed) then complacency is not what we need. Do basic checks over your sleds and what not and make sure you have all of your safety gear in your bags. New batteries in your transceivers, etc. So, I think that’s all I have to share. Stoked for another season! See ya around!

Treasurer’s Report Since I am new to the Board, it has been suggested that I do a little blurb introducing myself to the members. Some of you have seen me at the meetings for the last six or seven years, along with my husband Bob, who has been the ASA Southern Regional Director for a couple of years. I also maintain a membership in the Crow Snow Riders, with whom I first started riding about a dozen years ago. Yes, FIRST started riding! Before we bought our first sleds in about 2003, I had never been on the throttle of a snow machine of any sort. As a result of my lack of experience from my youth, I am definitely not an intrepid rider! But I do enjoy trail riding and a bit of meadow riding, just don’t expect me to be up on the hills, plowing through powder up to my windshield! When we spent a large portion of our winter weekends in the Crowsnest Pass, I became the treasurer for the Crow Snow Riders, and held that job for about five years, until we sold our property and were no longer there regularly. During my time on their board, the club applied for and received grant monies, both for trail maintenance and groomer purchase, and also hosted the ASA Jamboree. I know my experience with the Crow Snow Riders was responsible for my election into the same position with the Calgary Snowmobile Club! I invite the members to ask me anything they would like to know about our expenses, after our monthly general meetings. The books are always available for your perusal.

Judy Jones CSC Treasurer

Destination Coordinator’s Report All dates are confirmed now. We will be doing our stars ride with Crow Snow riders again this year. Staging for that will be determined closer to the event based on snow conditions. We've moved our poker run to Sunday for more dealer involvement and are hoping to make a great event out of the day. Rides this year will be very similar to last year with a few 1 day cataract creek rides added for those who can't make it out for the out of town rides. Looking forward to a good year of snow and hoping to see you all on the trails.

Club Membership vs ASA Membership Around this time of year, ASA Membership renewals start to arrive via Canada Post. Please note than an ASA Membership does not include a Calgary Snowmobile Club Membership. A Club Membership, however, does include the ASA Membership plus additional benefits specific to Club Members.

The Club membership entitles the member to:

Attend Club Rides

Attend Club general meetings and functions (Horseshoe Tournament, Windup Party, etc.)

Receive Club newsletters, Ride Notices, Trail Maintenance events, etc. by email

Receive notice of dealer / sponsor discounts for Club Members (show your Club Membership Card)

Vote on Club initiatives and the annual Club Executive elections.

A Calgary Snowmobile Club Membership (individual rider or family of riders) costs:

Club membership dues ($20).

One ASA Membership - Trail Pass ($70) per sled Thus a Club Membership for a single rider would be $90 ($20 + $70). Club Membership for a family of 4 riders would be $300 ($20 + $70 + $70 + $70 + $70).

The Club membership dues go directly to the Club and help cover Club-specific expenses such as:

renting facilities for our monthly general meetings and executive meetings

banking fees

mailing costs

web-site expenses/changes

etc. To ensure that you purchase a Club Membership and not just an ASA Trail Pass, please purchase your Club Membership through any of the following options:

At a Club general meeting

From an Executive member
