The Knysna Yacht Club is one of the biggest, and dare I say, one of the nicest yacht clubs in the country and it is indeed an honour and a privilege to have been elected as its Commodore for the year. Building a club like this does not happen overnight. It takes years of dedication from both Committee and general members. The previous Committee, under Jim Parke’s wing, did enormous amounts of work at the club. I would like to see that we can take it even further.

We have had great success over this past year amongst our sailors. We had various participants who were successful in their age groups and we are very proud of what they have achieved. I would like to thank each and every one of them as they proudly continue to represent Knysna Yacht Club. Andrew Finn has done a magnificent job with the sailing and I would, on behalf of everyone at the club, like to thank him for all the hours and the dedication he has put in.

It is wonderful to see all the water sports come together at the club - from sailors all the way through to SUP boarders. We have very successful boat and canoe builders in town and prominent sailors as members at the Knysna Yacht Club. It is a place where all these families get together and enjoy themselves. The Canoe section has grown immensely and it is lovely to see all the canoeists and their families on the water on a Tuesday afternoon. Here I would like to thank Paul Dugmore and his committee for all that they have done for the club and on all that they have achieved.

This Calendar is for all KYC members. It highlights many of the achievements by members of the club and general information regarding the running of the club but more importantly, it is a guide to all the sailing events for the upcoming season. We have tried to put in as much information as possible. Please come along and enjoy the events with us. For the more serious sailors, there is an ISAF booklet of rules available at the office.

The Restaurant is continually trying to keep up with member requests. We have invested in some new equipment and this will hopefully assist us with dealing with the busy days. Our staff, both in the restaurant and behind the bar, are there to assist at all times. If there are any problems, please do not hesitate to contact us anytime or write it down in the book and we will try our level best to resolve the issue.

A very big thank you to each and everyone who contributes to the club in his or her own way. It assists us in making our club as special as it is. We have amazing facilities, so lets make good use of them.

A Warm welcome to our Annual Club Calender. History is made: this is the 1st year that our Calender is electronic! Enjoy the literary-cruise through some of the Club’s memorable occasions and some of the many achievements of our Club members during the year as well as other handy Club information for your reference.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF KYC HIGHLIGHTS 2014/2015

As part of our annual town’s Oyster Festival in 2014 our Canoe Polo section hosted a very successful CANOE POLO TOURNAMENT and beat the team from Cape Town in the finals.

On 27th July 6 of our Junior sailors took part in the 5-day RS TERA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS that Knysna Yacht Club was proud to host at Swartvlei. They each gave a good account of themselves and the international sailing standard and the President of the International RS-Tera Class, with his international panel of judges, enjoyed breakfast at KYC.

August saw a young Junior crew sailing under the KYC banner, with John Young as Skipper, in the Lipton Challenge Cup 2014. They sailed under conditions varying from very light winds to 45 knot gusts – great learning curve for these Juniors.

The K2 Green Kalahari Canoe Marathon took place on the Orange River - friendly Northern Cape hospitality, excellent food, nice campsites and wonderful scenery in August between Upington and Augrabies. The low level of the river made it quite technical and saw a number of broken boats. Knysna paddlers Norman Frost and Paul Dugmore placed 3rd in their age group.

THE OPENING CRUISE saw lots of action on the water and virtually no space left on the deck to squeeze another body in. Tea and cake was, as always, enjoyed by all, thanks to Mrs Parkes and the Galley staff.

Our SPRING PARTY was a huge success with the sounds of DJ Lou keeping us dancing ‘til late! We kept Lovemore very busy behind the bar and enjoyed the fabulous Strawberry Daiquiris. Our visiting French Yachtie regaled us for many months with his delightful repertoire of piano melodies until he left in June 2015.

The Breede River K2 Canoe Marathon saw a number of boats damaged and many upturned canoes and swimmers. Only 201 boats finished with Neil and Di Steenkamp the top placed Knysna combo in 76th position.

The FOUNDERS TROPHY, our first Sailing race of the Season, had a good fleet of Lasers and Tera’s on the water with the CLUB CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP podium positions contested between David Shilton and Dudley Isaacs – great to see them on the water!

THE ANNUAL BARTS BASH, on 21st September, saw 21 South African Clubs taking part, with an international entry of some 20 000 people. It set a new Guinness World Record as the Largest Sailing Race ever held.

THE DEWAR SHIELD was only raced on 1 Saturday due to bad weather – the month of October seeing varied sailing conditions but a busy Restaurant. Cundell Statt and his Adventure School Juniors started sailing from the Club which, together with Mike Pogodin’s Junior sailors, saw a greater fleet of competitive young sailors taking part in the Club Competitions.

The Spring weather patterns were not conducive to great sailing on a regular basis and with the extremely high Spring tide our Keelboats were limited to many tacks and gybes between the sandbanks! We did see who the hard-core sailors were - surprising us with their enthusiasm and pure pleasure for the sport!

Our Asche’s Honesty Library grew with a great selection of good novels, sailing books, sailing disciplines and non-fiction travels. Thank you to all who donate to this library. Part of this library includes our Photographic files from our Visiting Yachties and a pictoral History of the Knysna Yacht Club from photos found and donated.

The Club Enterprise was refurbished and the Club is the proud owner of a pristine Enterprise – thank you for your dedication Maarten Visser and all who helped you.

Bart’s Bash was very colourful to watch from the shore-side and attracted a lot of different sailors to take part for a good cause.

The inaugural KYC OKTOBERFEST began the month of October and we enjoyed delicious authentic German fair and local craft beers. I do believe the photo’s speak louder than words!

Our Club members also held an ART & CRAFT EXHIBITION with a show of art painting, fibre art, bags, beads, organic toiletries, photography and cards. October was a winning month at KYC with both the RUGBY POT and KYC FRIDAY DRAW being won by very happy members.

The Southern Regional Championship was sailed at Mossel Bay with Sanele Magqaza being placed 2nd in the Tera Pro fleet and Apendule Maneli 3rd. A relative newcomer, JP Kriel of the Knysna Sea Cadets, achieved 3rd place in the Tera Sport fleet.

At home the PARKES CUP was enjoyed by the fleet, both on and off the water!

The 2014 Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in October was another exciting race with the river running at a slightly higher level for the 1200 entries - bigger rapids!

Our own K3 team of Trevor and Jennifer Niksch and Chris Stubbs’ race ended halfway through Day 1 when they were unable to free their boat trapped by the force of the water and had to abandon it. Ron Godfrey, Greg Chauncey and Kaylie Beers also suffered bad damage to their boats. Hubby Sandberg, in his 18th Fish, teamed up with another grandmaster Andre Rabie to finish 28 minutes ahead of the next boat in their age group. Michele Eray was once again our podium star, finishing as the 2nd lady in 55th position overall!

George Lakes Interclub at the end of October saw 12 of our Junior sailors participate in varied wind conditions with Sanele Maqgaza achieving 2nd Junior placing. It was great to see a number of our senior sailors, Knud Jacobsen, Dudley Isaacs, Chris Tiffen and Andrew Finn on the water too.

THE DEVEREUX TROPHY races had some mixed weather with a good turnout of Senior sailors and eager Juniors.

So too did BAILLIE CUP 1, with a very competitive fleet, and MA WYATT 1 which also saw Hobies back on the water and racing.

The Eden Sport Council’s Annual Sports Awards took place in November - CONGRATULATIONS to William & Lucinda Edwards who were the WINNERS in the category ‘Team of the Year’ and Sanele Maqgaza who was a FINALIST in the category ‘Newcomer of the Year’.

The tickets for our much enjoyed Gourmet Wine-Pairing Evening With Elgin Vintners sold out very quickly – don’t miss out on this special event next time.

KYC joined in the International Movember celebrations with a braai and party to crown Mr & Ms Movember.

Our CHRISTMAS DINNER really was a candlelit affair! We saw a fantastic turnout for this popular dinner with some particularly elegantly dressed diners who had heads turning.

Our modern FATHER CHRISTMAS visited our Juniors, even caging a ride on a motorboat and seen giving High 5’s!

MA WYATT TROPHY 2 was followed by MATHIESEN CUP 1 in December but unfortunately the Buffalo Bay Challenge was cancelled as the Heads were closed.

The Mirror World’s Event took place at Theewaterskloof Dam just outside Villiersdorp in the Cape, in December, with the Adventure School sailors taking part.

On home ground, Sally Bekker was the overall 2014 NTS winner of R1000 and a busy December was enjoyed with many visitors - our long-term visitors Hans Gier and Isabelle Lammens, on their Warram Cat, continued on their travels.

The Rotary Splash Dragon Boat Race on the 21st December was well supported by our canoeists. The Race was won (for the 3rd year running) by the Knysna Canoe Club team in a photo finish final against the Knysna Canoe Polo squad, who also managed to set the fastest time of the day in the semi’s.

One of the world’s premier surfski events, The Fenn Cape Point Challenge, took place and drew many of the world’s top paddlers. Our own Chloe Bunnet scooped the Ladies Overall victory. Knysna paddler Brett Esterhuizen and partner Carl Behrens also did well.

Our NEW YEAR PARTY with DJ Lou was a super success and THE place to be in Knysna - our barmen are simply the best in town, always with a smile.

A busy January and great weather & wind for MATHIESEN CUP 2 and WESTMINSTER TROPHY.

We were the proud hosts of the HOBIE 14 NATIONALS 2015 - 22 entries and their support crews enjoyed a hugely successful Regatta at the Club.

Our Congratulations to Blaine Dodds who not only won the Hobie 14 Nationals for 2015 but who was also awarded the ‘Sailor of the Year 2014’ award by South African Sailing magazine.

The first 4 positions were all KYC members, the overall positions were: 1st Blaine Dodds, 2nd William Edwards, 3rd Don Tait, 4th Declan Nurse, 5th Nick Ryall, 6th Douglas Edwards and 7th Don Brink. Our young Knysna Development sailor, Bhekemuzi Hani, sailed a Hobie 14 provided, on loan, from the Western Cape Hobie Association.

The very same weekend saw a Junior team taking part in the Redhouse Interclub Regatta and Sakhumzi Funda and Lukhanyo Papu tied in First Place for KYC –Well Done to Mike & his Development Juniors.

February ‘sailed off’ with THE KNUDS CUP which was dominated by the Lasers.

KYC INTERCLUB REGATTA was a resounding success with 80 boats entered from 5 Clubs – so many different coloured sails on the water and a great number of tents, with Juniors (and adults) enjoying our town and Club on this Valentines weekend.

The competition was fierce, the water crowded and two different days of weather tested all sailing skills.

And while we were competing at home, Douglas Edwards (seen left) held the name of Knysna Yacht Club high by winning the Hobie 14 Western Cape Province Champs - CONGRATULATIONS.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon is a big event in the Canoe Annual Calender, unfortunately most of our Canoeists could not make it this year.

The CLUB CLASS CHAMPS took place, with everyone watching the weather for the scheduled BUFFALO CHALLENGE 2. Unfortunately the weather did not play along, with the bar closed, many disappointed sailors!

Our upriver MACKINNAC RACE venue had to be changed due to a clash with of the Celtic Festival weekend and, still in a festive mood, our members gathered to welcome many new Club members at the New Members Evening.

The MICHAELIDES TROPHY was sailed in light winds with lots of water – thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part in the 3 races.

The Eastern Cape Inter-schools regatta at Red House, KYC Development sailors consistently sailed at the top in all races which ensured the Percy Mdala school pupils successfully defending their title, winning the Inter-Schools trophy for the 2nd year running.

Georgeou Divaris from KYC/GLYC took line honours in the Senior fleet on his Laser Radial. Sanele Maggaza, KYC on his Laser 4.7 took the silver. Well done sailors.

March saw our ‘fleet’ of 4x 4-man Canoes back on the water after being repaired by Knysna Racing Canoes.

The Southern Cape Inter-schools regatta took place at George Lakes Club - there is always a great deal of enthusiasm and competitiveness at the inter-schools resulting in a great vibe, even if the winds don’t play along.

17 March is ST PATRICK’S DAY, and an absolutely brilliant Party at KYC. DJ Decks was FANTASTIC! If you weren’t there you really missed out.

Our Canoe Club joined in the day’s festive mood in their time trial – Congratulations to Ian & Holly Godfrey - winners of the Canoe Club Best Dressed Irish Award.

BUFFALO BAY CHALLENGE 3 happened! 11h00 on Sunday 22nd March saw a number of eager Keelboaters head out to sea. Most of the 8 yachts got to Noetzie (course change due to wind direction) only to have the wind die to a few knots. Heading back in they were greeted by lightning and spectacular clouds of the pending rain storm.

The FASTNET TROPHY series was sailed over 2 weekends, the races being long hauls to the heads and back and with high water late afternoon the flooding tide tested the local knowledge of the conditions in the Lagoon.

EASTER BUNNY PAWS came across the Causeway, causing a frenzy of activity to try and find all those Easter Eggs by children and Grannies alike.

Our Congratulations to our Hobie sailors who were very busy in April – the Hobie 16 Nationals in Durban were won by KYC sailors, William and Lucinda Edwards, with the silver medal taken by another KYC sailor, Blaine Dodds and daughter, Roxanne. 6th place was taken by Douglas and sister, Pippa Edwards. The Hobie Tiger Nationals held in Langebaan, was won by Lucinda and daughter, Pippa Edwards. Our Hobie sailors will be travelling to Europe in July for competitions there – GOOD LUCK to them.

OUR COMMODORES CUP, the last formal sailing competition on our calendar for the season, took place over 2 weekends. Round 1 had 16 competitors on the water sailing in a variable light south Easterly wind and flooding tide – very much a tactical race.

Dudley Isaac joined in the fun at the 505 Worlds in Port Elizabeth.

The Tera Worlds selection regatta was held in Swartvlei with our own Sanele Maqgaza (pictured with Coach Mike) being chosen as one of the South African Team to participate in this year’s Tera Class World Event in Holland at the end of July. Congratulations Sanele – we are very proud of you and wish you fair winds.

The Canoe Club held the first race on the GOUKAMMA RIVER and was supported by 44 paddlers – perfect weather for paddling.

The COMMODORES CUP 2 took place on the same day as the CLOSING CRUISE - a wonderful turnout for our Closing Cruise with all manner of boats (some very ‘dressed all over’) taking the salute from our Commodore. The fleet was led by the TS Knysna Admirals Barge, the Margaret Parkes, with the incredible Mrs Parkes on board (see photo on the Inside back cover).

The ANNUAL SAILING PRIZE GIVING took place after very much appreciated tea and cakes and the fires burnt late into the night in Asche’s Cabin.

Petty Officer Amber Cloete (pictured right) of the Knysna Sea Cadets was selected as the winner of the National Sea Cadet of the Year Competition, and 3rd place went to the Master at Arms Cadet Petty Officer Delisen Juries, also from Knysna (pictured left). They will travel to the USA to participate in the Cadet Summer Camp at Newport, Rhode Island in June/July 2015. We are very proud of our association with the Sea Cadets and to these Cadets who are often seen on the water.

Our Canoeists enjoyed a successful HOOGEKRAAL RACE – with many competitors from nearby Canoe Clubs, and a big contingent of Junior Canoeists, enjoying the beautiful scenic river. The overall winner of the main 17 km race was Martin Fraser-Mackenzie, in the 9.5 km race Phil and Felicity Mailer finished first and in the 4.5 km guppy race, first place went to Toby Tyrrell.

Photographs by Janet Stanwix.

A Flare and Liferaft Demonstration was given on Saturday 30 May. Roger Clancy held a fantastic informative demonstration of Handheld flares and Liferafts and in true Roger-style added many laughs to the day with his super sense of wit and wisdom.

Knysna Yacht Club was represented in the J22 InterClub Youth Nationals held at the Transvaal Yacht Club in June with a 6th overall – not bad at all for a first Regatta as a team on a new Class of boat never sailed before!

Roger Clancy, President of KYC for 30 years, stood-down in June 2015. Knysna Yacht Club is indebted to Roger in so many ways and he will be sorely missed. We hope we will still catch him every morning at 10h00 for his breakfast at-the-club!

Well known KYC sailor, David Shilton, was part of the SV Dorade team who came 2nd in their Class in the Transatlantic race beginning 28th June from Newport, Rhode Island. David has taken part in a number of International Racing events and is known for his passion, ethics and professional manner of yachting as well as technical ability and understanding of yachting. We are very proud of you David.

Knysna Yacht Club will be represented in The Lipton Cup Challenge 2015, taking place from 10-17 July this year by a Junior Team. They are: Georgou Divaris on helm, Seth Young on Foredeck, Sage Pretorius as Foredeck Assistant, Sara Young in cockpit with Halyard & winches, Justin on Sheets and Jason on Cars and Spinnaker Trimmer. This is the first time KYC have entered a Junior-only team and we will be watching them closely.

We are very proud of our canoe and surfski Champion, Chloe Bunnett.

Chloe grew up in Knysna and started canoeing when she was about 13 yrs old and has never looked back. At 16 she started training more seriously and entered flatwater sprints, marathon and river races, eventually representing South Africa at the World Junior Sprint Championships in Japan in 1994.

In 2000 she moved to the UK and took a break before trying out a surfski in 2008, but by 2009 she was already competing in international races and has since achieved some amazing results all over the world, some of which are:

2014 - British Champion, 1st at Eurochallenge, European Master’s Surfski Champion in her age group, Bronze overall at the European Championships, 5th at the World Series Cape Town Downwind race and 1st in the Cape Point Challenge. 2015 - 2nd at the World Surfski Race, Eurochallenge in Spain, 1st in the UK Series race in Poole, 1st overall at the World Series race, the Allwave Cup in Italy.

In May, Chloe also became the Canary Island Champion where she is based in Tenerife for the European summer. We will see her and Pete back here in Knysna later in the year.

Graham Bird is another of our Canoeists who has excelled in the field of sports this past year - his Merrell Adventure Addicts team won the Expedition Africa adventure race in Swaziland, taking 72 hours non-stop to finish the 460km course. The race included rafting and canoeing. Well done to them!

Knysna Yacht Club wishes to thank all our sponsors of our Sailors, Canoeist and Regattas. THANK YOU

Chloe Bunnett

Interim report covering Junior Sail training for the period December 2014 to end April 2015 incorporating Transformation and Development

As in prior years with the holidays fast approaching and schools winding down for the end of the year, sail training of the various groups that joined the programme at the beginning of the sailing season came to an end. Notwithstanding this, December provided an ideal opportunity for students to practice what they had learnt and for a few others who were not able to join the various programmes, to receive personal tuition.

The month of January was a quiet month as far as sail training was concerned, with the majority of learners only returning after the year-end holidays and in the latter part of the month, in time to resume their formal education. Accordingly scheduled training courses only resumed in the last week of January but a number of novice sailors, who had received personal tuition successfully, completed the Level 1 course and were awarded their certificates.

During the off-period, work was undertaken repairing and maintaining boats and launching dollies so that serviceable equipment was available at the reopening of training in January.

Training

Fairly intensive coaching and training sessions were held daily from January through to the end of April, the end of the KYC 2014/15 sailing season, briefly summarised as follows:

1. Mondays - Sea cadets 2. Tuesday - Level 2 -5 sailors 8 sessions of 2 hrs all attained certificates.3. Wednesday - Level 2-4 sailors 6 sessions of 2hrs all attained certificates.4. Thursday - Novices transformation 15 enrolled 5 sessions of 2 hrs only 3 sustained the

course no certificates awarded.5. Friday - Level 2- 5 sailors 8 session of 2 hrs all attained certificates.6. Friday - Level 1- 6 sailors 8 sessions of 2 hrs 4 attained certificates.7. Saturday - Intermediate 8 sailors 6 sessions of 2-3 hrs race training.

Of the learners enrolled, 14 Level 2 sailors received their certificates while 4 Level 1 learners attained the required competency level and were awarded their certificates. Of a total intake of novice learners of 15, only 3 managed the full course for one reason or another but did not achieve the required level of competency and accordingly did not receive certificates.

Saturday morning coaching for the more advanced sailors continued, with the majority taking part in club racing in the afternoons.

Event Participation

The Hobie 14 National Championships were held at Knysna Yacht Club over the period 16-18 January and Bhekumusi Hani, one of the KYC transformation and development sailors, took part. This participation was made possible by the Western Cape Hobie 14 Class Association who arranged a boat from Cape Town for Bhekumusi. This boat has been lent to him to sail in Knysna and improve his skills at sailing a multi-hull boat.

Over the same weekend, a group of development and transformation sailors, Sakhumzi Funda, Lukhanyo Papu, Aphendule Maneli and JP Kriel, were taken to Redhouse Yacht Club in Port Elizabeth to participate in the inter-club regatta held on the Swartkops River. These sailors did us proud and scooped a first place in the Juniors, which they shared with Algoa Bay Yacht Club.

JP Kriel, a Sea Cadet, in particular has grown significantly, having participated in the World Tera Championships held at Swartvlei Sedgefield last year and is now playing a leading role in training sessions with his peer group. The cost of travel, regatta entry fee, food and refreshments for the team was covered by the Knysna Yacht Club.

Knysna Yacht Club were the host club for the Inter-club regatta held on 14-15 February. Five clubs participated, and in addition to the Eden region clubs of Mossel Bay, George Lakes and Knysna, Algoa Bay and Redhouse yacht clubs were represented. With some 30 boats in the junior fleet, the competition was fierce, and the KYC development and transformation junior sailors were only able to achieve a third place.

The Eastern Cape Inter-schools regatta was held at Redhouse Yacht Club over the weekend of 7-8 March with five development sailors, Lukhanyo Papu, Sakhumzi Funda, Aphenduli Maneli, JP Kriel and Sanele Magqaza, from KYC taking part. The competition, as always, was tough but the KYC team was able secure the trophy for their school, the Percy Madala Secondary School in Knysna.

A team of seven KYC junior sailors participated in the Southern Cape inter-schools regatta hosted by George Lakes Yacht Club over the weekend of 28-29 March, a popular event with 44 high school and 18 junior school sailors taking part.

At the Algoa Bay Yacht Inter-club held on 22-27 April, the KYC Development sailors again scooped line honours taking the first four places in the junior fleet and the Junior Trophy.

The selection regatta for the Tera Worlds Championship to be held in Holland in July, was held at Swartvlei from 8-10 April where Sanele Magqaza archived a fourth place in the Tera Pro class and secured a place in the team to represent South Africa in Holland. Through generous sponsorship arranged by the Tera Class Association, supported by the allocation of funding DECAS received by KYC, as a well as KYC funding, Sanele will be able to participate in this World Class event.

We wish him every success.

Junior Keelboaters Report

Our Keeler Group has seen an increase in the numbers of Junior Sailors the past season. Most of these sailors have come up the ranks from Dinghies and try to attend regular Saturday sessions whenever their hectic school calenders allow.

John Young has been instrumental in motivating this team of youngsters to follow through on some serious studying and as soon as the majority of them turned 16 years old they have completed their Radio-Telephony exam and have done much studying for the SAS Day Skipper Course.

It is super when these youngsters bring their friends along and introduce them, not only to the sport of sailing but also to a lifestyle – clean, good, healthy fun ! We continue to receive positive feedback from the Commodores and Team Managers of events they take part in, both on the water and socially. Well done guys (and girls!).

Their event participation in the last year is noted in the Kaleidoscope of Highlights.

KNYSNA YACHT CLUB TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SWING MOORING RENTAL

In order for KYC to continue to offer, make available and maintain swing mooring facilities to its members, to the required standards, the following measures will apply:

1. From the 1st of April each year, the revised monthly rental fee structure will apply.

2. Vessels with similar draft, hull configuration and weather cock characteristics will be strategically moored, however, in order to maintain mooring of vessels in a safe and orderly fashion, KYC reserves the right to move craft to an alternative mooring, as deemed necessary.

3. The costs for 6 monthly inspection, maintenance and minor repairs to the moorings are included in the fee structure (as per clause 1).

4. As circumstances arise, in addition to the monthly rental fee, mooring occupants are to accept an invoice for co-payment of extra labour and materials, as deemed necessary, to maintain the mooring in good order, without prior notice.

5. Occupants are reminded that the required mooring tackle (strop, bridle etc.) is for their own account.

6. Safety and security of the vessel remains the responsibility of the owner. A reasonable watch is to be maintained (in particular during inclement weather) and in times of absence a suitable caretaker person is to be appointed, with introduction to a KYC mooring committee member.

KNYSNA YACHT CLUB 2015 – 2016 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

1. RulesAll races will be governed by the “Rules” as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013 - 2016, South African Sailing prescriptions thereto, applicable appendices, the rules of the applicable Class Associations, and these Sailing Instructions, as well as by amendments to the above as have been, or may subsequently be, made, and the S.A.National Parks regulations governing the Knysna Lagoon.

2. EligibilityCrews of competing yachts shall be members in good standing of a yacht club affiliated to S A Sailing.Helmsmen of competing yachts must sign in on the signing-in sheet provided.

3. Starting TimesThe starting signal for the first race on Saturdays will be at 14h30, or as stated on the notice board or in the sailing calendar. The starting time of any subsequent race(s) will be on a back-to-back basis. Any yacht that has not started within 4 minutes of her starting time will be disqualified. In case of a series over a weekend, the starting time for the first race of the following day will be posted on the notice board by 17h00.

4. Signals & Notices to CompetitorsSignals made ashore will be displayed from the Bridge mast, and Notices to Competitors will be posted on the Notice Board.

5. Class Flags Shapes may be used for Bridge starts, whilst pennants may be used for committee boat starts.

6. Changes to Sailing InstructionsAny change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted on the Notice Board not later than 30 minutes before the warning signal of the first race to be affected by the change.

7. The StartThe starting line will be between the flag mast on the Bridge, or the signal mast on the Committee Boat, and a yellow float.

Starts will be as per the RRS rule 26.

8. CoursesThe courses to be sailed will be set out on the Whiteboard on the Club’s deck, showing the order in which the marks are to be passed and the side on which each mark is to be left, not later than 30 minutes before the warning signal for the race to be sailed. Underlined marks are to be left to Starboard, non-underlined marks are to be left to Port. Courses will not be changed after the Start. This alters Rule 33.

A course change for subsequent back-to-back races will be signaled by the Bridge, or the Committee Boat, displaying the L flag and a notice board showing the new course.

9. The FinishThe finishing line will be between the flag mast on the Bridge, or the signal mast on the Committee Boat, and a yellow or orange float.

If a race is shortened, this will be indicated by the rescue boat, displaying the “S” flag, being stationed at the last mark of the course to be rounded. The finishing line then will be between the flag mast on the Bridge, or the signal mast on the Committee Boat, and the finishing mark, from the direction of the last mark. This alters Rule 32.2

10. Marks

Marks of the course will mostly be the mid-channel markers for the keelboats and or the yellow Club buoys mostly for the dinghies and the cats, or red inflatable buoys.

The starting and the finishing mark will be a yellow or orange float.

Page 54: calender 2015/16

11. Time LimitThere will be no time limit for races, but the length of a race will be at the sole discretion of the Principal Race Officer. Boats that have not finished within 15 minutes of the first boat finishing in their class may be scored as DNF.

12. SafetyThe Race Committee reserves the right to disqualify from further races in the series any yacht(s) that it considers to have insufficient buoyancy. This adds to the Class Rules and the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing.

Attention is drawn to RRS rule 1.2 covering a.o. Personal Flotation Devices.

13. RetirementThe helmsman of a yacht retiring from a race should inform the Bridge at the end of the race, or earlier, of their retirement.

14. ProtestsProtests are to be written on the prescribed form and lodged with the Bridge officers within 30 minutes of the finishing time of the protestor or protestee, which ever is the later, of the race in which the incident occurred, or of a subsequent back-to-back race(s)

The protestor shall ensure that:

‒ He/she, together with any witnesses he/she may wish to call, is/are available for a meeting on the Bridge, 30 minutes after the protest has been lodged, or at a time to be advised.

‒ The helmsmen of yachts protested against have been informed of the protest.‒ The helmsman of the protested yacht shall make him/herself available for a meeting as set out above.

15. ScoringThe Low Point scoring system will be used for the Cup and Trophy races.

In addition the High Point scoring system will be used for the Aggregate Trophies and any Class racing trophies whereby each competitor gets 1 point for starting plus 1 point for each boat that he/she beats.

Attention is drawn to Rule A5 and the Race Officer may score a competitor DNS if that competitor was OCS at the start and did not return to the pre-start area, or DNF if that competitor is known to have sailed the wrong course. Such competitors will not receive a finishing sound signal but they may request redress as per Rule 60.1(b).

16. PropulsionRule 42 may be turned off, in certain conditions, by the Finn and the 470 class, when rule P5 may apply.

17. LiabilityCompetitors sail entirely at their own risk. No responsibility for damage or injury resulting therefrom will rest with the Organising Authority, Class Associations, KYC, nor any person or organisation concerned with the running of the race or races.

18. Special Club RulesClub rules and regulations governing the use of waters under the control of S.A.National Parks, or other authorities, as may affect sailing any specific event, will be posted on the Notice Board. Failure to comply with these can lead to disqualification from the race nearest the occurrence of the infringement.
