Kwanza is a holiday invented in 1966 by Ronald Karenga.

It is a one-week celebration from December 26th to January 1st. The African-Americans commemorate their origins and honor their culture. They lit a candle on every day of the week, called Nguzo Saba, each one representing a principle. On the last day gifts are exchanged.

The exchange of gifts symbolizes Christmas (in the western celebration), which for African-American is also a time to be spent with their family.
