Your School Community is Invited to a Screening of Most Likely to Succeed

PAISBOA and ADVIS are excited to offer two screenings of Most Likely to Succeed, a new award-winning film about ways to better educate our children. This documentary by famed Director Greg Whiteley looks at best practices at 20 schools, especially

Conference. The following are testimonials describing Teibel's effectiveness: Jeff Shields, President, NBOA: "[Howard's] presentation was thoughtful, engaging and compelling. Howard has the unique ability to meet people where they are, and move them further than they believe they are able to go. His presentation included a combination of structured experiences, a variety of media and Howard's passion for helping organizations reach their full potential through the people that comprise them. Tim Austin, Provost, Duquesne University: "[But] I would say of Howard what I say of the handful of excellent consultants I have worked during my thirty-five-year career: when I talk with him, he helps me articulate good ideas that I did not even know I was thinking - until he asks the questions that prompt them. I recognized his skill in this respect from our first encounter half a dozen years ago and that perception was only reaffirmed during this most recent project." Brian Linnane, President, Loyola University Maryland: "Howard's ability to incorporate external inputs and his broad professional experience into his consultancy helped the University to better understand the myriad externalities that meaningfully impact contemporary universities." Click here to hear podcast clip of a conversation between Teibel and Jeff Shields. The two hour session starts at 10:30 AM with a break for lunch. Register today for this informative session.

Chromebooks Gaining Acceptance in Education

According to a recent post in the ISTE blog, Chromebook's market share of personal computer shipments to the K-12 Market has risen to 49% for the last calendar quarter. At the same time, the relatively low pricing is driving down the prices of competitors. See the article for more information. Plant Managers to Learn About Vendors' Design Services Al Greenough, PAISBOA Join the Plant Manager's meeting on October 22, when three in-house design experts will describe how they can help schools when they are about to undertake modest facility changes. These services are implemented by experts who have excellent technical knowledge and experience and the cost is typically built in to the cost of the product. Since special vendor pricing is included in PAISBOA agreements, design services are virtually "free". They will prove to be a cost-effective way to use PAISBOA vendors for refurbishment and upgrades to common areas and classrooms. Leave with concrete ideas about how to get your projects designed and implemented efficiently and economically without paying for expensive architects or contractor "advice". Hear from these experts and see examples of what they accomplished in several PAISBOA schools:

In 2014, thousands of Green Apple Day of Service projects happened all over the world, with almost 130 of them taking place right here in the Delaware Valley. This year, Green Apple Day of Service will be celebrated on Saturday, September 26, 2015, but projects can be scheduled anytime this fall. This day of service gives parents, teachers, students, companies, and others the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive environments through service projects.

What started as an opportunity to fill a summer camp need for 10-passenger vans turned into a much-needed resource for PAISBOA schools. Now in its 13th year, Blue Bell Leasing Company is thriving and growing. We are proud to announce the lease of our

100th van (and counting). In a recent interview, Business Officer Joe Donahue of Devon Prep, who recently leased our 100th van, was kind enough to answer questions about his experience with Blue Bell Leasing to help us commemorate this milestone. Blue Bell Leasing: How did you hear about Blue Bell Leasing Company? Joe Donahue: We heard about Blue Bell through PAISBOA and recommendations from other schools that were very pleased with the family-run, hands-on business model that BBLC uses. BBL: When did you start leasing from Blue Bell Leasing Company? JD: We have been dealing with BBLC since September of 2003 and have been leasing their vans ever since. BBL: How did you transport students before? JD: Prior to that, we owned all of our vehicles but the upkeep and financing added a significant amount of cost and work to an already busy schedule. BBL: How does the cost of leasing compare to owning vans? JD: Our cost savings is significant which is why we continue to use BBLC year after year. BBL: Are you happy with the Blue Bell Leasing Company vans, service and price? JD: The service we have received is excellent. We especially value starting each year with clean, safe vehicles in great condition. Their pricing is the best we have found. BBL: Any advice for other schools in need of vans? JD: Leasing vans is an economical and easy process with many benefits. I have recommended Blue Bell to other schools and will continue to do so. Blue Bell Leasing Company is here to serve the PAISBOA community. We offer 1- and 3-year leases for either 9 or 12 months a year. Consider us for a short- term lease as well. Our prices are competitive. You will receive superior service and the best quality vans from a family run business.

AFS Students Make a Difference with Non Profit Neighbors Mary Ann Boyer, Boyer Sudduth Environmental Consultants

Students will remember Abington Friends as a school where "place-based" education wasn't just theory. Place-based education binds organizations and schools to collaborate on local causes. Over the years, AFS students worked with neighboring non-profits to become community stewards. Lower school science teacher, Rosanne Mistretta, stands at the hub of the school's community

partnerships. Walk into her classroom and you will see structures made from twigs and seeds when students built fairy houses, observational drawings and photos when they planted trees along a stream, and germinating seeds to be used by a local farm. All of these exemplify work students have done with community partners. So how did AFS begin to partner with other non-profits? "It began with a phone call," Rosanne recalls. "Four years ago I called Briar Bush Nature Center, a local environmental center, and asked if they would partner with us." That call led to Briar Bush's support for AFS' K-12 science night, and, over the years, their involvement has evolved into a meaningful collaboration. Nature Play Date: Briar Bush and AFS now sponsor a community-wide event called "Nature Play Date." One Saturday each spring, families with young children visit the school to "play" outdoors. The Nature Center and AFS host activities on the school's grounds: children build forts and fairy houses, paint with watercolor, and create nature journals. This event reaps the benefits of AFS's dedicated lower school educators working with the Briar Bush's experienced teachers to create fun activities for kids. Read the complete article here.

Staff from the Tookany Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership and AFS students plant over 350 trees and

shrubs along Jenkintown Creek's riparian buffer.

Sustainability of Technology to be Addressed at Next Tech Meeting

Al Greenough, PAISBOA

On November 5, Dr. Scott Garrigan, an engaging teacher, coach and mentor to students in the Lehigh University Graduate School of Education, will lead a discussion about the Sustainability of Technology as a Strategic Goal in Schools. The technology group will welcome him to Philadelphia and our world of Independent Schools. Normally the terms "sustainability" and "technology" are not used together except in the context of hardware disposal, but he

asks, "What if your technology could be managed more as a renewable resource like solar energy than a consumable resource like oil?" We need to sustain an infrastructure of interlocking components, including hardware, networking, connectivity, software, professional development, and the budget process to support them all. To learn more on Garrigan's philosophy and what he will discuss at the meeting, refer to the attached article. The luncheon will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM in the PAISBOA offices. Tech Directors and Business Officers are encouraged to attend. Register today.

Employees Need Education About Options that will Achieve the Outcomes They Want

Ben Lewis, TIAA-CREF

According to TIAA-CREF's 2015 Lifetime Income Survey, almost half (46%) of Americans surveyed are concerned they will run out of money in retirement. Overwhelmingly, they want to be certain of a monthly paycheck in retirement.

Employers can help address these concerns by offering lifetime income products as part of their plan menus and providing access to financial advice and education. Access to lifetime products is a critical first step, but for employees to take advantage of these options, they must know about them. Employees that do have a lifetime income option in their plan need compelling communications around the benefit of this option and advice on how lifetime income options can help meet their long-term goals. Revisiting your communications and education strategy could help raise employee awareness. And contrary to conventional wisdom, baby boomers are not the only employee group that would benefit from education and advice about lifetime income. Younger generations may actually benefit the most from advisory services. After all, the sooner employees begin planning for retirement the longer they will have to implement an effective plan. Americans under 45 are as likely as the overall population (84%) to give priority to having a guaranteed source of monthly income for life, but they are less likely to be familiar with annuities. Advice and education from employers - whom 85% of young people trust for financial information - can help bridge this gap. Lifetime income builds confidence. And lifetime income from in-plan annuities can help provide employees with the certainty they are looking for in retirement. As a plan sponsor, you are in a position to boost the retirement confidence of your employees by offering them the investment options to create a retirement income stream they can't outlive, and the advice and education to help them understand how these options can help meet their goals.
