SHINSHIRO NORYO FIREWORK FESTIVAL - LATE SUMMER IS TIME FOR FIREWORKS!
One of the Summer Traditions of Shinshiro-City, this festival, held annually on the night of August13th, has as stage the area around Sakurabuchi, on the Toyokawa River bed, and the gorgeousmountains that form the backdrop make the explosions echo in peculiar and entertaining ways
followed by dance, bonfire - and the Hiondory Torch Festival/fire dance started as a way to rememberthe souls that passed away during the the battle of Nagashino and the Warring States era, and is held
dramatically at the war ruin Shingen Zuka. Local people perform with massive torches (2-3m long,80cm in diameter). An event with Bon-Odori dances, performances of Japanese Taiko drums, and
both tezutsu and regular fireworks. This festival is to mourn the deceased.

Christmas really starts in Newcastle with the reveal of the Christmas Window in the city’sfamous department store Fenwick’s. Recent themes have been “Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory”, “The Snowman” and the books of Beatrix Potter. The complex and detailed creativeprocess takes up to 3,500 hours and involves elaborate storyboards designed in collaborationwith German company One World Studio, which specialises in creating displays all around theworld. Newcastle’s Christmas lights are switched on in the early to middle part of November.

The Christmas season begins in Newcastle, Ontario with Winter Wonder Lights – the Newcastle BIACommunity Town Hall Lighting Ceremony. The evening will be filled with good cheer and exciting
activities. There’s also the annual Tree/Wreath Festival at Diane Hamre Recreation Centre inNewcastle, running through to mid- December. Then there’s the big Santa Claus Parade with afantastic fireworks display a followed by entries that range from marching bands, to clowns and
beautifully light up floats that children of all ages enjoy. Finally, it’s Breakfast with Santa (a pancakebreakfast) at Newcastle Community Town Hall.
For one of our smaller Newcastles, there’s certainly a lot going on to celebrate the holiday season inour Canadian Newcastle.
