Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Throughout this term I have referred to the school’s vision; to be a safe and caring community who learn and grow

together, to make a difference for us and our world. I have also spoken about the values. Responsibility is one of our

school values. I notice our youngest learners being responsible for carrying their school bag every day and being

ready to start their learning. Having spent time in the year 1 and year 4 classrooms this week I have noticed the

values displayed and the student’s thinking recorded as to how they take responsibility. Some of the year 1’s

thinking about being responsible is:

I will put my stuff away

I will come to the floor

I will look after the school

Listen to the teacher

Put rubbish in the bin

Do something good without being asked (I think this

statement is my favourite).

Every student is encouraged to display responsibility for themselves,

their peers and our wider school community. Students at times are required to take responsibility for words or

actions that have offended or hurt the feelings of others. All staff at Kensington Primary take the time to discuss the

actions and choices students make and how a word or gesture may impact another student, staff member or

member of the community in a negative or positive way. Teachers work with students during class meetings to

discuss a concern or event that may be positive or negative to develop strategies and personal resilience to be

responsible.

Late in Term 3 I wrote a submission for a grant to provide the funds for the construction of an accessible entrance. I

would like to personally thank the members of our community who supported the efforts to ensure all our school

community were offered the dignity to enter and exit our school grounds when required. I will be working with

architects from the Accessible Building Program to develop a vision and planning for the works to commence.

We have commenced planning for and developing the playground for the back park. Students have contributed to

the plans and agree with the concept that has been developed. The removal of the back park was not an easy

decision, however the safety of all students is a responsibility. Saturday the 14th of September will see a little

Hollywood descend upon KPS with the screening of Toy Story 4. Thank you to the most amazing fundraising

committee and supportive parents who have so generously supported the school with their time. A huge thank you

to all parents/guardians who have so generously donated items for the hampers, you are amazing! I was speaking

with one of our year 6 students about the event. Her question was, how much money do you think we can raise? My

reply was $50,000.00. She stopped looked at the ceiling and asked the question, how many children at KPS? My

reply 504. Well, she stated if everyone helps I think we can do it! With such a positive attitude I agreed, we can do it!

HELP THESE DRAWINGS BECOME A REALITY

Parents and guardians in years 3 and 5 will receive the NAPLAN documentation on Friday. Please check those school

bags to find a large white envelope which contains your child’s results. NAPLAN tests are constructed to give

students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and should be recognised as another page of the assessment

portfolio. At Kensington Primary parents are informed as to the growth of their child/ children’s skills and

understandings across all curriculum areas via school reports each Semester with the supporting evidence of the

work samples contained in the student portfolios. If you require further clarification as to the NAPLAN report please

make a time to speak with your child/ children’s teacher. As a staff we will be examining the data collected to further

inform the continuous improvement of our teaching and learning programs. I will share our results in the final

newsletter for term 3.

Enjoy your weekend – Bridget

Cooking and Gardening – 5/6B and 5/6C

Over the past two weeks 5-6B and 5-6C have participated in our cooking and gardening program. We fired up the

pizza oven to prepare some delicious pizzas as well as enjoying our now famous chocolate zucchini cake for dessert.

5-6B’s reflections:

My favourite thing about cooking and gardening was:

Bonita – ‘seeing the path resorted’

Bess- ‘eating the delicious pizza’

Kate & Shona– ‘seeing the chicken nesting on its’ egg’ & feeding the chickens

Aakif- ‘assembling the pizza

Riya – ‘eating all the icing so there was none left for Grace (teacher)

Harvey- ‘eating the brownie, how did you make a vegetable cake taste so good ?!’

Zack O – ‘cutting the grapevine’

Rowan – ‘soaking the plants with water (and each other ho ho ho )’

Hamish- ‘saving some plants from the most painful death’

Grace – ‘cutting the vegies (watch for your fingers!)’

Zach R- ‘I invented the cheesy crust’

Minh- ‘clearing the path’

Eliza- ‘eating cake – yummy in my tummy’

Sarah- ‘covering my face in cake mix!’

Lawson- ‘feeling the sand between my toes … mmmm’

Claudia- ‘falling over like the angel I am’

Freya- ‘practising my ‘Australia’s got talent’ act … with Sarah and creating an almighty mess with

Bess- thanks for all the help cleaning it up, parents’

Jackson – ‘planting the plants (WOW)’

Ali – ‘Cutting the pizza with the pizza cutter.’

5-6C’s reflections:

We liked how there was a lot of icing but i got a belly ache. we liked the cake it was nice thank u Kate -from Analise and Kaitlyn

We enjoyed the cooking because of how we cut the ingredients which was satisfying. But most of all we obviously enjoyed the Eating part. Eating was an amazing experience not only because of the taste but the feeling of our achievements and hardwork. Out of the gardening we loved seeing and interacting with the chickens since we dug worms for them which was entertaining to watch the chickens devour the worms that we dug up. Planting the plants was also great, sometimes after all the rush in the kitchen and seeing the chickens we need a relaxing time to calm down and that time was planting. - Liam, Jafir and Alli

I liked sitting down and patting the chickens.🐓🍕-Daniel

Zeinab-I loved collecting the new chicken eggs they were warm.then I found out what the chickens like to eat sunflower seeds and corn!

We liked hypnotising I mean playing with da chickens in da garden and making da pizza’s it was realllllly fun and cutting with knives and thank ya Kate -AbiPIG & CindoRAT

I really enjoyed cooking and gardening today. Because I have not done it in awhile I was really excited and I had a good time. - Grace

Ayah-I loved eating the pizza and putting the toppings on! I also liked the chocolate zucchini cake but I may have had too much!! I,especially enjoyed feeding the chickens and I also saw the new eggs(YESSS!!!)!!

It was really fun and we made a lot of food that we all managed to eat somehow (pizza ,cake with to much cocoa powder and icing .) -Oliver

My favorite thing was finding worms and maggots in the garden and "sacrificing" them to the chickens. In the garden we also planted spider plants. the spider plants were very easy to plant because we just needed to dig a hole then put it into the ground. l also helped make the zucchini and chocolate cake with Grace, Henry and Kaitlyn. the cake was extremely spongy. It was a piece of cake! - Will Hampton

I enjoyed it. I liked how we did activities that kept us busy and entertained. -olla

In the gardening we had fun feeding the chicken coop and having a ball with planting spider plants. In the kitchen we enjoyed making pizzas. Nupur Mischa Tanecia

I liked cooking and gardening because I got to hold the chickens and we gave two of them nicknames, the white fluffy one Bok-Bok and one of the brown ones Carl. - Maisie

It Was very fun with my friend in cooking and gardening. I liked making the with Grace, Will and Kaitlyn. After we went to gardening we looked for worms and maggots to sacrifice to the chicken. Then at the end we planted spider plants. Then we ate the delicious pizza and zucchini cake. Henry N

I liked how we had a lot of ingredients to choose from to make the YUMMY Pizza! 🍕-Duc

It was good because I cuddled bokbok and i made pizza with only vegan stuff. –Harvey

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful parent helpers. Next week it’s 5-6E’s turn. Feel free to come along!

With thanks,

Kate and the Grubbies
