Ahilan Arulanantham is the Director of Immigrants’ Rights and National Security at the ACLU of Southern California. He has successfully litigated several cases involving the detention and deportation of non-citizens detained as national security threats under the immigration laws, successfully represented a U.S. citizen wrongfully detained as an enemy combatant in Iraq, and won victories to alter the laws governing prolonged detention in the immigration context. In 2007, he was named one of California Lawyer Magazine’s Lawyers of the Year and in both 2007 and 2008 was named one of the Daily Journal’s Top 100 Lawyers in California. Prior to joining the ACLU’s Southern California office, Mr. Arulanantham was an Assistant Federal Public Defender in El Paso, Texas for two years. Before that, he was a fellow at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project in New York, where he provided legal assistance to dozens of non-citizens detained after the September 11th attacks. Mr. Arulanantham is a former law clerk to the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar. Sixth District Court of Appeals at School of Law on Tuesday, March 15th
The Sixth District Court of Appeals will be on campus hearing oral arguments in the Panelli Moot Court Room in Bergin Hall on Tuesday, March 15th from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Students are invited to attend case hearings. This is a great time to learn how the court functions and to ask questions of the Justices. You’ll want to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to see lawyers in action. Students entering and leaving the courtroom will be asked to do so quickly and in a quiet manner. For security purposes, Court Officers will scan all individuals entering the courtroom. Books, backpacks, newspapers, phones, radios, pagers/beepers, cameras, etc. will not be permitted in the court room while court is in session.
