On Saturday, September 21, 2013, there was a tropical storm warning out predicting 8 inches of rain that day. It was decided at 8:30 a.m. to not risk having the Deer Park High School students (directed by Mr. Frank Woodruff) brave the rain and be out on the freeway that morning. The 2013 Texian Navy Day ceremony was cancelled at that time. Reporting for duty aboard the Battleship TEXAS was Mr. David Hanover, Mr. Scotty Patrick, Mr. Ron Brown and the United States Marines; Sgt. RM. Delacruz, Sgt. B. Ballard, Cpl. D. Arenas and L. Cpl. G. Aragon. The U.S. Coast Guard was circling the battleship and was ready for duty as requested. Mr. Bruce Bramlett, the Executive Director of the Battleship TEXAS Foundation, also reported for duty with his side- arm that had grips made from the deck of the battleship. The Sons of the Republic of Texas extends thanks to the Battleship TEXAS Foundation and the personnel of the battleship for their assistance in hosting this year’s ceremony. We would also like to extend a hearty thank you to the Parks and Wildlife Department for their assistance. Mr. Justin Rhodes, State Parks Region 4 Director, and Mr. Andy Smith, ship’s manager, were to be distinguished speakers. We also would like to extend appreciation to SRT Honorary member and a Knight of the Order of San Jacinto, Mr. Jerry Patterson, who was the featured speaker for the ceremony. The SRT Color Guard with Mr. Tom Green was to be assisted by the pipe band from St. Thomas’ Episcopal School. Pipe band participants were to be Jess Wakeland, James and Anthony Masterson. The Mastersons are the sons of San Jacinto Chapter member Dallam Masterson, all direct descendants of Secretary of the Navy Samuel Rhodes Fisher. The United States flag was to be posted by the U. S. Marines. Mr. Tom Houston, First Vice President General, Mr. Joe R. Davidson, KSJ, a member of the San Jacinto Chapter and an executive committee member, Mr. Dennis Giuffré, President of the Sam Houston Chapter, and Mr. Fred Mead, President of the Lone Star Chapter had also planned to participate. Also participating was Mr. Scotty Patrick, a member of the San Jacinto Chapter and the President General of the Descendants of San Jacinto, Mr. Bill Turner, President of the Texas Navy Association, Mr. Ben Brooks from Buglers Across America, and the Texas Army, commanded by Mr. Sam Houston IV, Mr. John Martin, Mr. Tony Emmitt, Mr. Randal Hankla, from the Sam Houston Chapter, and Mr. Jerry Tubbs. The Texas Army and the Lone Star Volunteers manned the cannons and had black powder rifles ready to fire. The symbolic laying of the wreath of honor was to be performed by Mr. David Hanover, KSJ, Mr. Scott Patrick, Mr. Bill Turner, and Mr. Will Haddock from the San Jacinto Chapter. TAPS were to be sounded by Mr. Ben Brooks, and the Colors were to be retired. We would then re-assemble at the Monument Inn for lunch and the taking of the recommended Grog. Next year, we have already started planning for and have received permission from the Mr. Larry Spasic, President of the San Jacinto Monument, to have the San Jacinto Monument auditorium as a backup location in case of rain. As we enter the fall of the year and reflect on almost another year in the life of

The Sons of the Republic of Texas, we have accomplished much for which we

can be proud. A late-breaking success story is the reactivation of the Sterling C.

Robertson Chapter #22, Salado, approved at the third quarterly meeting of the

Executive Committee, held appropriately enough in Salado, on September 14th.

Congratulations to the chapter members who have committed to rebuild an active

chapter, and i look forward to visiting your chapter soon!

Throughout 2013, individuals, chapters and SRT committees have organized and participated in ceremonies

and events that honor our Republic of Texas ancestors. From Texas independence day through the Battle of

Gonzales, along with birth and death remembrances of Republic of Texas presidents, as well as events honoring

your own ancestors, you have been in the public eye and made favorable and lasting impressions on others.

Our success depends on the dedication and hard work of our individual members and chapters. Public events in

the name of SRT encourage membership growth, with qualifying prospects deciding that they want to be a part

of such worthwhile efforts. Social media has no doubt helped our visibility, resulting in increased numbers of

new membership applications throughout the year.

The first organized fundraising activity in many years, the Matching Campaign, lasted for one year and ended

in June; many of you helped build up the funds that support the various awards to youth, educators and authors

seeking to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who settled Texas. The awards listed in

our Constitution and Bylaws should be assured for the next several years. However, we never want to rest on

our laurels; in every dues notice mailed out each year, there is a long list of the various funds to which you may

give voluntarily. These funds are ongoing needs of the organization and do not stop with the end of a successful

campaign.

in recent years, we have come to expect drought conditions, with few worries of rainouts. unfortunately,

what was planned to be the third consecutive Texian navy day ceremony on board the Battleship TEXAS had

to be cancelled at the last minute. Event organizers had a good visit with the united States Marine Corps color

guard that had travelled to the battleship, Semper Fidelis! never miss an opportunity to thank our men and

women in uniform for their service to our great country. next year, we will be more optimistic and plan for

rain! The previous evening, honorary member Jim Bevill gave a great presentation on the Texian navy to a

crowd of almost 200 people in Surfside, and thanks to him and honorary member Michael Bailey for their parts

in remembering the navies of the Republic of Texas. A third opportunity to remember our ancestors was held

the same weekend at Monument Hill in La Grange. Thanks to all of our SRT volunteers who make all of these

events such successes!

Please note a new addition to the annual dues notice that you receive in the mail this fall. There is a special

insert created by our Annual and quarterly Meeting Committee, encouraging you to participate in the 2014

Annual Meeting to be held in San Antonio next spring. Whether you are able to attend the meeting or not, you

can be there in spirit and have your name printed in the Annual Awards Banquet program. The committee hopes

you will make plans early to attend the San Antonio meeting in person! cont. pg. 4

The Alamo Chapter SRT attended a unique ‘double’ historical marker dedication at the Rio Cibolo Crossing near La vernia on May 11th. The old Gonzales-San Antonio Road was used by both the Texian and Mexican armies during the revolution. One marker describes the history of the crossing while the other describes the crossing as the location where Alamo survivor Susanna dickinson met scouts from the Texian army and informed them of the fall of the Alamo. Pictured with the markers are Alamo Chapter members Robert Bohlmfalk, Ken Pfeiffer, George Harcourt, Joe Weathersby, Leroy Salinas, Johnny Brannan and Edward Heath. The participants were treated to a visit to the actual crossing which is now on private land where local historians pointed out the historic oak about a mile away from where ‘deaf ‘ Smith scouted the Mexican unit sent to collect the cannon in October 1835.

i encourage you to attend Stephen F. Austin’s birthday celebration on Republic Hill at the State Cemetery

on Saturday, november 2nd. The ceremony will honor the Father of Texas’ 220th birthday, with his birth on

november 3, 1793. The monuments and grounds capture the essence of Texas’ rich history; whether you have

never been to Republic Hill or have been there many times, there is always a new Texas history lesson to be

learned with each visit.

Plan to attend the fourth quarterly meeting in victoria, december 6-7. A group dinner in victoria on Friday

evening will be followed by an Executive Committee meeting on Saturday morning, and all members are

welcome and invited to attend. The annual Presidio La Bahia Award program will be held in the Lady of Loreto

Chapel at the presidio, located on the outskirts of Goliad, on Saturday afternoon. Following the program will

be a most special knight investiture ceremony for two honorees, member denton Bryant and honorary member,

the Most Reverend david E. Fellhauer who serves as Bishop of the diocese of victoria. The knighting of

two deserving members at a place other than the traditional annual meeting ceremony is unprecedented in the

history of SRT, so come and be a part of this very special day.

Please mark your calendars now, and watch for future announcements about a special ceremony in

mid-January that pays tribute to Sul Ross in Waco on Saturday, January 18th.

As a final reminder: Please pay your 2014 SRT annual dues early! Your chapter receives a $6 rebate for each

chapter member who has paid his dues on or before december 31, 2013.
