This 5-week Lenten series will focus on the basics of engaging in a discernment process the Ignatian way. Through presentations, large and small group discussions, and doing certain prayer exercises, participants will learn how a time of decision-making can also be an occasion for drawing closer to God and for deepening their relationship with God. ►Franciscan Spiritual Center, 2512 SE Monroe, Milwaukie, 97222 503-794-8542 The Spirituality of Holy Eating At the heart of Christianity is a Sacred Meal. Throughout the ministry of Jesus meals played an important role. All of the major Religions of the World, and (probably the minor ones too) address food in various ways. Sometimes through peri-ods of fast and abstinence. Sometimes through outright prohibitions of certain consumables. In the United States the Standard American Diet, (SAD) is adopted rather quickly by immigrants. Through advertising, including popular movies and TV, SAD is spreading around the world. Is this good? In the USA most people do not eat with consciousness. The average meal can take less time than it took to write this introduction. Is SAD the best way to nourish our bodies and souls? Join in a process of becoming conscious eaters. Begin to recognize the Spiritual Connection that exists between God, nature, community and the food we eat: Films, readings, discussion... and food! Dates: Monday January 11 thru February 22 Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Cost:$100 for series or $20 per session Facilitator: Valerie Chapman, D. Min. Liturgy Corner -compiled by Pat Raschio (sources At Home With The Word, Sco Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Feast of the Baptism of the Lord: This feast proclaims a theophany, a revelation or manifestation of the di-vine Sonship of Jesus by his anointing and appointment to his messianic office. It is the feast that proclaims the Baptism that elevates believers to the status of sons and daughters of God. The Liturgy last week re-vealed the mystery of God's plan - that in Jesus all peoples, symbolized by the Magi, have been made "co-heirs" to the blessings promised Israel. This week, we're shown how we claim our inheritance. In the Gos-pel we hear John the Baptist address the confusion of the people who thought that John might be the Mes-siah. In response, John contrasts the baptism that he performs with the Baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist says that he has baptized with water, but that someone will come and baptize with the Ho-ly Spirit. The type of baptism that John performed was not yet a Christian Baptism; it was a preparation for Christian Baptism through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. Jesus doesn't submit to John's baptism as a sinner in need of purification. He humbles Himself to pass through Jordan's waters in order to lead a new "exodus" - opening up the promised land of heaven so that all peoples can hear the words pronounced over Jesus today, words once reserved only for Israel and its king: that each of us is a beloved son or daughter of God. On this, the last day of the Christmas season, the Gospel reveals to us Jesus' relation to God: the son of Mary and Joseph is also God's own Son. In Luke's Gospel, all three members of the Trinity are manifested here: God the Father in the voice, the Holy Spirit descending, and Jesus the Son. What challenges do you encounter in living out your identity as the “beloved” of the Father? “Merciful Like the Father.”

The Corporal Works of Mercy: ► are feed the hungry, ►give drink to the thirsty, ►clothe the naked, ►welcome the stranger, ►visit the sick, ►visit the imprisoned, and ►bury the dead.

So how might we begin to live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy? As we begin a new year we could think of this as a spiritual trip and we need to pack for our journey. What do we pack in our spiritual luggage? We turn to St. Paul (an experienced traveler himself) for some recommendations. He suggests “layering” with several items. (like we are doing in this weather). First and foremost, “Put on Christ.” Then, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness (teach-ability), patience, and forgiveness. Imagine how different our life and relationships would be in 2016 if we dressed ourselves every morning like that! To quote an author I read: “If we want it to have real meaning and fulfillment… ‘Put on faith’, and your life will take on a new flavor, it will have a compass to show you the way; ‘Put on hope’ and every one of your days will be enlightened and your horizon will no longer be dark, but luminous; ‘Put on love’, and your life will be like a house built on rock.” Let 2016 be the year you grow spiritually. Seek first the kingdom of God, and you’ll be surprised by how many other things heaven provides .
