GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP 101: It is a time to weep, to cry, even to smile and to laugh. It is a time to remember a loved one who has died and, we believe in faith, has been welcomed home by our loving Father. It is a time to tell the many stories of our loved one and how they may have affected our lives. It is a time to know that your grief is healthy, and needs to be expressed. The first session was on Thursday, January 11. The next session on Thursday, January 25, will be at the home of Karen Dixon. We will meet at Holy Family Church at 6:30 p.m. and proceed to Karen’s house, for a “get acquainted with the program’s format” and outline the rest of the sessions. This will be followed by a potluck meal provided by Karen. You just need to bring yourself. The next two dates will be as follows: February 8, and February 22; all at Holy Family, all on Thursday evening, and all beginning at 6:30 p.m. The sessions will end at 8:00 p.m. There are ten sessions and the dates of the rest of the meetings will be determined by the group. If you would like to attend, and so we have an accurate account, please call Chaplain Jim Fedor at 481-5702. Please call if you have any questions. Margie Munkittrick and Jim Fedor look forward to seeing you.

St. Jude Baptiste Haiti and The Church of Holy Family Virginia Beach,

Virginia: Past, Present and Future

PAST: Over 15 years ago, Holy Family Church began a twinning relationship with St. Jude in Baptiste, Haiti. Under the direction of the late Bishop Walter Sullivan and the late Father Thomas Quinlan (TQ), the church was renovated, the presbyter residence and TQ school were built in Baptiste, Haiti.

PRESENT: Please pray for the over 1,000 students, 39 teachers in the 5 schools twinned with Holy Family. (Shown below are the students attending the newly dedicated middle school addition) The new school was built by Haitians and funded by the parishioners of Holy Family (dedicated April 2017). The school has three classrooms, office, library, storage, water closet, running water, and electricity.

FUTURE: The funds from the last two Great Neck 5K Run for Haiti have been reserved for the JustHaiti Coffee associations. Many of you have bought coffee from Haiti the first weekend of the month. Holy Family sells the coffee at cost so the farmers in Haiti benefit the most. There are currently six associations and Baptiste hopes to become the seventh soon.

MEET FATHER CASSAGNOL METELLUS: Fr. Cassa has been the pastor at St. Jude Haiti for the past 8 ½ years. He has overseen the construction of four schools in Baptiste. He designed and supervised the recently dedicated middle school. Fr. Cassa is the director for the youth of Haiti. He runs conferences for the youth and has taken the youth of Haiti to World Youth Day in Brazil and Poland. He is respected and beloved by the members of the Haiti committee.

WHY I SUPPORT HAITI: My wife Renee and I have over 60 years of teaching experience combined. We believe that education is the most powerful tool you can use to change the future. We believe that the sum of human wisdom is not contained in one culture or one language. We have joyfully sponsored a Haitian teacher for the last ten years. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about the education in Baptiste, Haiti

Brian Alexander (Haiti Chairperson): [email protected] or (757) 284-9745

Please check the bulletin monthly for the continued story of Holy Family and St. Jude.

Interested in Haiti? Please consider joining the Haiti Committee. The committee meets 7:00 p.m., the second Tuesday of every month at Holy Family.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” In my opinion, the Christmas Season is a good time to be reminded that God brings about changes in His own time and His own way. At the beginning of the first century, the world situation was in a miserable state with the Roman Empire’s ruthless rule of the known world. God did not rush in, though, and make swift changes. The change began with the birth of a baby boy in a fairly unknown town. Who could have dreamed what a difference He would make! Even then, 30 years had to pass before He would begin His public life and start the wheels of change rolling. A radical set of values and principles spread throughout the globe. Now consider our present world situation, particularly the state of our Earth and its future well-being, which could be seen as bleak. This dismal situation could, through God’s time line, give rise to important changes down the road. A movement could gradually be developing which will alter the tide of events. Remember that the Earth belongs to God and He will see that it flourishes, in His own time. This outlook, however, does not relieve us of our role in building a vibrant Earth. With God’s guidance and our persistent efforts and actions, our planet will survive and be resilient, providing all creatures with the resources necessary for a fulfilling life. Hopeful signs of this revival are already occurring.“Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change. We lack an awareness of our common origin, of our mutual belonging, and of a future to be shared with everyone. This basic awareness would enable the development of new convictions, attitudes, and forms of life. A great cultural, spiritual, and educational challenge stands before us, and it will demand that we set out on the long path of renewal. ~ Pope FrancisEd Marroni (587-4887 or [email protected])
