Car Cost Calculator Many people don’t know what the actual out of pocket costs are for
owning a car. If you are a two car household, you will be able to weigh up the cost benefits or deficits of being a one car household when you
assess what the out of pocket expenses for an extra car really cost.
Although there may be cost benefits associated with rethinking our car use, there are also health and environmental benefits to be had by
using alternative means of transport.
Take the time to consider the alternatives available to you.
Car Cost Calculator To estimate your out of pocket costs of running a vehicle, follow the simple
instructions on the following pages. You will need to look back over the bills you have paid in the last 12 months and to keep a record for a short
time of fuel costs and kilometres travelled. Example – How to calculate your fuel costs per kilometre:
If you calculate your fuel costs over a typical one month period, you can then estimate the number of kilometres you would be likely to travel in a year by multiplying the monthly total kilometres by 12.

*Based upon walking 4km a day for 12 months and paying $300 for walking gear
**Based upon cycling 8km a day for 12 months and paying $1,000 for cycling gear

The cost of using buses varied significantly across the region as well as the length of journey. As such a per kilometre estimate was not able to be calculated.
