LEARN HOW TO PAINT PORTRAITS IN WATERCOLOR

This five week class will teach you how to use the medium of watercolor to paint loose, impressionistic portrait sketches and also more developed finished portraits of your favorite people. You will begin by learning how to draw the face for painting, how to achieve a likeness and how much detail to include in the drawing. Next you will find out how to mix and use the skin tone colors and how to paint all of the features, including the hair, in watercolor. Finally to complete your paintings, you will learn different ways to paint the clothing and backgrounds.

INTRODUCTION TO FLY FISHING

This course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing, with no experience required. Through slides, demos, and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about fly fishing equipment and techniques for streams, lakes and ponds. Students will learn some basic aquatic entomology, how to “read” water that holds fish, a bit of game fish identification and biology, and basic fly casting techniques, on grass and on a local farm pond.

Learn how European geography and climate influence wine from different regions. The focus will be on French wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Southern France plus Loire, Alsace and Champagne. You will also learn about Italian and Spanish wines and discover how European wines differ from those of California. Additionally, you will learn how to read and interpret European wine labels. You should have taken the California Wine Appreciation or another basic wine appreciation course prior to taking this course. Bring three glasses to each class. Minimum age: 21 years old, must bring photo identification to first class session.

INTRODUCTION TO ENOLOGY

Basic Enology describes and explains the basic chemistry and microbiology of winemaking to better understand how to make high-quality wines, prevent and address flaws, and improve ageability. This class will cover an extensive list of topics, including: grape composition and harvest decisions, primary and secondary fermentation processes, spoilage organisms, and sanitation procedures. Other topics cover will be the aging process, barrel dynamics, bottling considerations, flaw correction, fining agents, filtration methods and improving cellar procedures. This course examines the facility management profession and all functions associated with it, including strategic planning, financial planning, budgeting, project management, operations and maintenance, sustainability, emergency preparedness and how those functions interface with the overall goals of the business enterprise.

A highlight of this course will be educational forums with industry experts.

Students enrolled in CM S510, Principles of Integrated Facility Management, can attend and participate in classes live via the Internet or on campus at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Both on-campus and online students will be able to review previously recorded class sessions if they miss the live class or wish to review. There will also be online activities, assignments and discussions between classes. No class on 1/18/14, 2/1/14, and 2/15/14.

POLYMERS AND COATINGS TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

NCR 9363

Cal Poly’s winter short course on polymers and coatings brings together academic and industrial experts in the field. The one-week course covers many aspects of coating technology with emphasis on liquid coatings. Other coatings technologies (e.g., powder coatings) are discussed in order to compare and contrast with traditional liquid coatings. In addition, participants benefit from discussions of VOC and air quality aspects of coatings by experts in both industry and government regulatory agencies. Participants are expected to have had some exposure to the coatings field along with working knowledge in chemistry and other sciences. The course will convene at 8:00 a.m. on Monday and end at 12:00 noon on Friday.

Join Cal Poly and industry experts in learning how to improve productivity and minimize waste through plateroom automation best practices. We will explore ways to maximize plate utilization, efficiently cut plates, speed up plate imaging and processing, quickly and accurately mount slugs and plates, and cut staggered seams to minimize substrate waste. Using Esko’s DFS Suite, attendees will get hands-on experience improving productivity, minimizing waste, and learning how to automate your flexo plate production.

Today’s flexographic markets require the highest quality printing, rivaling offset and gravure. HD Flexo is EskoArtwork’s new high-resolution screening and digital platemaking solution that helps make it possible for you to achieve that level of quality. This workshop will provide you with the knowledge needed to evaluate HD and how to best optimize HD screening for your environment. Over a three-day period, participants will learn how to implement HD Flexo from the best in the industry by walking the process from start to finish. A simulated job design, proofing, workflow, digital platemaking, anilox and tape selection, flexographic printing, and process control - will draw on Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” philosophy. HD Flexo’s excellent quality is made possible with 4000+ DPI imaging, highlight screening, and innovative full-tone screening algorithms, smooth vignettes, drop shadows, and high-key images that surpass the best flexo quality to date.
