Heidi (Arizala) (clarinet ‘89) Showman, and her husband Ken, are happy to announce the arrival of their first child, Harrison Andrew, on August 31, 2002. “We can’t wait to take him to his first Cal football game!” writes Heidi. Heidi currently works part time as a mental health counselor with kids and Ken is a software design engineer at Microsoft. They reside in Redmond, Washington.

John (clarinet ’86) and Elizabeth (Molina) (picc

‘87) Rich write: “Nicholas Romero Rich was born on May 20th weighing a whopping 9 lbs 2 oz, and measuring 21.5 inches long. Mom and Dad are doing fine, just trying to catch up on some Z’s. Big brother Matthew is a great help and hasn’t tried to beat Nick up yet.”

Dave Stein (alto sax ‘89) of the Lancaster Steins married Tanya Adler, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, on December 13, 2001. Their wedding took place on the fifth night of Chanukah. They currently live in the heart of Los Angeles. Tanya’s father, Dr. Norma Adler, received his Ph.D. at Cal, and is currently academic dean at Yeshiva University. The Steins would love to see any old friends that are living in or visiting Los Angeles, they can be contacted at [email protected].

Mary Honma (glock ‘77) is living in San Francisco with her husband and 7 year old daughter and

working in the biotech field.

Don Shennum (percussion ‘89, TH Manager 92-93) and his wife Laura welcomed the arrival of Conor Orion Shennum on June 3rd, 2003. Conor weighed in at 9 pounds 15 ounces, which means he’s ready to march! Don and Laura also have a daughter, 4-year old Siena. After spending 3 years in Nebraska, Don and family returned to the Bay Area last year. The family is moving to El Cerrito in August, and Don works as an IT Business Analyst for Koret of California, in downtown Oakland. He can be reached at [email protected].

Matt (Harpo) Bjork (bass ‘87) writes: “Two kids, one house, (one wife), one sousaphone, one job (but looking for a different one in Nanotech)...Is this midlife???”

Steven Copley (clarinet ‘73) reports: “I’m alive and relatively well in Saratoga, California, and am joined part-time by my 15 year old daughter, Laina, who just got her learner’s permit to drive – EEK! I remain a Houston Astros fan, though am much less likely to be seen wearing an orange baseball cap these days, but will also root for the Giants and A’s when called upon. After a long career in software quality assurance, the past two years I’ve been working my own business - Lighthouse Tutoring. I guess those three years as the band’s “Academic Wizard” is paying off! My students range from 5th grade to adults going back to college, and I help them with math and/or science. I’m getting great reviews from my students and their parents, and business is growing slowly but steadily. If you know anyone in the South Bay who could use a tutor, I can give a Cal Band referral discount for the first 4 lessons. Contact me at [email protected]. When I’m not tutoring I spend my time caring for my daughter’s rather insane but lovable canine, and playing an online “card” game, Magic, where currently I am in 5th place in a “league” of 256 players.”

Renee Bulow (trumpet/trombone ‘96) has been living in San Diego for two years and is attending Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD for her Ph.D. in geophysics. “My research involves lunar seismology (that’s right, moonquakes),” writes Renee, “and I will be publishing my first paper sometime this year.” Renee is living with her boyfriend in Ocean Beach and would love to hear from some old band friends, contact her at [email protected].

The ‘76 Ex Comm - Randy Parent (mello ’73, SM ’76), Jim Gaston (clarinet/tenor sax ’73, DM ’76), Al Timpson (alto sax ’73, StuD ’76), and Alan Weaver (clarinet ’73, PRD ’76) - all attended the class of ‘77’s 25th anniversary party at homecoming in the Hall of Fame room at Memorial Stadium. Al and Randy served on the planning committee. In their research to invite classmates, they were saddened to learn that Geoff Bergen (trombone ‘73) had passed away -- no details were available.

Tom Larsen (baritone ‘78) and his wife Debbie live on rural property in Grass Valley, where they continue their efforts with their company Shoreline Cases (www.shorelinecases.com) in Nevada City, designing laptop cases and other electronic gear cases for consumers. Tom was recently elected President of the local Nevada County Concert Band which plays in numerous venues around the area and does a Picnic in the Park POPS Season every summer. Tom is also President of the Gold Country Chapter of the CAA which is increasing its outreach and scholarship efforts in Nevada County. “I don’t really miss all the congestion of the Bay Area or Sacramento,” writes Ton, “and the time I save never being stuck in traffic is the reward for leaving!” Contact Tom at [email protected].

Duc Bieu Pham (Tenor Drums ‘97) is currently living in Pinecrest, California, where he mostly sets tables, serves food, wipes tables, and sweeps floors as a staffer at Camp Gold of the Lair of the Golden Bear. Next, he will move to Berkeley to focus on photography and writing in preparation for his trips to the Sundance Film Festival, Summer Olympics Athens 2004, and Cuba and South America. Photojournalism is a possibility. Contact Duc at [email protected].

Since graduating in December of ‘99, “Bass Drum” Ben Bachelder (bass drum ‘95) has been a busy Berkeley Bandsman. After an immediate four-month backpacking tour of Europe, he decided California was not nearly exotic enough and packed up his worldly belongings and relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to making use of his Civil Engineering degree, he learned how to surf the waves in an outrigger canoe, made several trips out to the 3000º molten lava of the Big Island, and hiked most of the trails throughout the state. Music wasn’t completely forgotten - he established himself as top DJ and promoter in the Honolulu club scene and threw countless house parties just outside of Waikiki. That all changed a year ago, when he once again packed up his worldly possessions and sold or discarded everything that wouldn’t fit into a backpack. Once again it was off to Europe, this time to traverse the continent primarily by thumb as a hitchhiker. Beginning in Sweden, home of his current girlfriend, and then continuing across Northern and Eastern Europe, he made it as far as Turkey without having to buy

a plane, train, or bus ticket. The war made it impossible to get across Iran without flying, so that’s just what he did, to India. After two months in India and another stop in Sweden, he’s on his way back across the US (hitchhiking, of course!), and will be back in Berkeley for the end of August. There’s a book in the works and he’s a contributing writer for several websites and a soon to be published book, Europe in a Backpack. The adventure continues in Hawaii once again for how long nobody knows.

Jay Jhun (Clarinet ‘90) and his wife, Aleks are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Ashley, August 28, 2002. Jay is splitting his time working at Global Tours in Burlingame, the Community School of Music and Arts (www.arts4all.org) in Mountain View and a freelance print and web design company, j2 Creative Services (j2-creative.com).

Mary (Sobieralski) D’Acquisto (picc ‘93) and husband Sal D’Acquisto proudly announce the arrival of their baby girl! Josephine Teresa D’Acquisto was born on March 26, 2003 at 8:53 a.m. weighing 8 pounds, .2 ounces and measuring 20.8 inches long. “Josie” has a full head of hair and she’s an adorable and healthy

baby. She can’t wait to meet you at Alumni Band Day!

Abigail Rudona Bleichner was born on July 13, 2003 9:48pm to proud parents Brad (snare ‘91) and Amy (trombone ‘89) (Sawyer) Bleichner. After over a full day of labor, Brad is happy to report that everyone is home and doing very well.

Mark “Coach” Schmuck (trumpet ‘90) announces that he is now engaged to be married to his new fiancée, Laurina Brasil. Mark pro-posed to Laurina, who is fast becom-ing a fan of the Cal Bears, on June 20, 2003, in Department 11 of the Santa Clara County Superior Court after having been ordered to do so by Judge Catherine Gallagher (they’re not kidding about that!). Mark and Laurina look forward to a Spring 2005 wedding and many happy years together.

Kevin Carter (Trumpet ‘81) and wife Maria Churchill (MBA ‘92) moved to Los Angeles three years ago. They live just south of Beverly Hills and just bought a second home in Big Bear Lake. Kevin is working for the City of Glendale doing civil engineering and acting. If you did not blink you may have seen him in “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” or “Run Tel Dat” (nope you’d have to be on the cutting room floor for that one). Maria has her own shoe store, check it out www.deboutshoes.com.

wonderful parties to raise needed funds for the University of California Marching Band. The first will take place at the Haas School of Business on Friday, September 5th at 6:00 p.m. This is the night before Alumni Band Day where Cal Band alumni will march and spell out “California” at Memorial Stadium, when the Bears play Colorado State. We hope that many alumni and other friends who are coming to this game from out of town will book a room for Friday night and attend this year’s NorCal Benefit. On Friday, October 17th, the CAA is holding it’s annual SoCal Benefit for the Band at the Wilshire Ebell in Los Angeles. This year’s event should be as much fun as ever in this interesting, historical venue. If you are not receiving annual invitations to these parties, please contact me so that I can make sure you receive them.

As always, we have a great array of auction items for sale at these special events. If you have interest in helping us secure a donation for the auction, please contact myself for the NorCal or Annette Ramirez at the CAA for the SoCal. Some of the most popular items include overnight stays at hotels, bed and breakfasts or private homes, wine, certificates for fine dining and Cal apparel!

The Cal Band looks forward to having your continued support in 2003-04 and beyond. Thanks for your assistance and GO BEARS!

After the NorCal Party make sure you get a good night’s sleep so you can show up bright and (not too) early at the band room for Alumni Band Day on Saturday, September 6! This year’s call time is 9:00 A.M., plenty late for those who attend the NorCal Party the night before to sleep off their food & wine-induced hangovers and join the fun!

Tell you what, if you come to the NorCal Party and Alumni Band Day we’ll give you Sunday off to enjoy the day with your family in the Berkeley area. Now is that a deal or what?

For more information on the NorCal Party see the article in this issue or contact Carol Suveda at (510) 643-2662 or [email protected]. For more information on Alumni Band Day see the Upcoming Performances box, the article in this issue, or contact Erin Proudfoot at (925) 706-7222 or [email protected].

As we prepare for the upcoming fall season, I would like to share a little about what’s in store for this year’s exciting performances. My Stunt committee and I have contrived a Pregame that we hope will be an energetic display of the traditional and creative Cal Band spirit. Our goal in charting Pregame is to engage all sections of Memorial Stadium since it is our most intense performance. We anticipate a large incoming class of newmen as well as a great group of returning members to bring the band back into full throttle in August. We hope to get bandsmen excited during our Fall Training Program as we start practicing the new Pregame to perform for the first time in August.

Stunt and the Musical Activities Committee have selected seven halftime shows, one for each of our football game appearances. We have chosen an eclectic array of shows that attempt to entertain all of our fans, and

we hope there’s a little something in our mix for you to enjoy too!

One of our halftime shows, The Batman Show, will be a bit on the theatrical side and will revisit what some may call an outdated custom of the Cal Band. We’ve heard of the past successes of such performances as “The Melodrama” featuring Kathleen Azevedo and the swarming Cal Band basses, so we felt it was time

for the band to try something similar. Stunt has started to create the “show concept design” for Batman, which relies less on intricate band movement and more on a plot line that ties the entire show together in a dramatic fashion. The element of a story line on the field will give it a Spring Show feel and is something I think the Band will be able to execute well. The innovative performance will be one for the audience to remember.

I hope this preview of the fall season sparks your interest and compels you to support us by coming out to the games to watch us perform. I can’t wait to get the season rolling! Thanks for reading and … GO BEARS!

This summer, as in all summers past, Tellefsen Hall finds itself in the midst of yet another recruiting season and a busy, yet productive spring. In May, the House bid farewell to 10 seniors, one of our largest classes in recent memory. While many of our fellow graduates are our searching for jobs, a few have chosen to continue their education at the graduate level. They include Peter Symonds, who will be earning his masters in civil engineering at UC Davis, Courtney Reed, who will be attending Law School at the University of Wisconsin, and Allison Ryan, who was awarded an engineering fellowship at our own alma mater. With the close of the school term, Tellefsen Hall opens another chapter as it welcomes a new set of leaders for the upcoming year. The Board of Directors is pleased to introduce Steve McClaine (trumpet, ’82) as the President for the upcoming year. McClaine takes the helm from Wade Williams (trumpet, ’77), who served as Board President for 12 years, overseeing the admission of women into the House in 1993, and the successful completion of a $1 million retrofit project in 2001. On the home front, Brittany Stieg (clarinet, 2001) of Pleasanton, California, takes charge as the House Manager, while Brad Gibbs (percussion, 2001) of Bay Shore, New York, will serve as the House President next year. Outgoing House President Angela Riedel (clarinet, 2000) moves forward to serve as the Cal Band Public Relations Director. As Tellefsen Hall prepares for yet another busy fall, we are excited to once again host the Northern California recruiting Barbecue this month, featuring a performance by the Straw Hat Band. In addition, the House will also be embarking on several projects aimed at improving the building’s interior. New carpet is scheduled to be installed in the common areas, and the Board is planning a refurbishment of the onsite library and its facilities.

A Cal Band 4th of July in Redwood CityJacob Guilbeau, baritone ‘02

July 4th not only marked the anniversary of our country’s Declaration of Independence, but also marked a return to Redwood City for the Cal Band. Absent from last year’s festivities, the Cal Band triumphantly returned to the Redwood City Independence Day Parade and had a good ol’ time jamming with it’s many fans. The Peninsula Celebration Association presented the 64th annual Independence Day parade, the largest parade in northern California, and arranged a mini Battle of the Bands between the Aggie Band-Uh, Stanford, and the Cal Band for after the 1.3-mile route through Downtown Redwood City.

After the parade ended and we exchanged our signatures for free food (typically called “autographical interchanges of commerce”), it was time to provide the people with the entertainment they came searching for. We introduced ourselves with “Big C” and pleased those in the audience with

4th of July in Sausalito

It was 40 years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught his Band to play...

This past July 4th found the Cal Alumni Band celebrating 40 years of Beatlemania on the picturesque shores of Sausalito, California. Several of our more distinguished alumni (you know who you are!) took this opportunity to get their shag wigs out of mothballs, paste on a mustache and sideburns, and dress in their finest Beatles era garb to hit the parade route in fab four style.

In good Alumni Band tradition, the Band was able to “bring their beer along,” this year in a shopping cart-turned-Yellow Submarine filled with cold and frosty beverages courtesy of Sausalito’s Golden Gate Market.

The band was a hit at the reviewing stand, where a rousing rendition of Twist and Shout made even the wallflowers in the crowd twist their hips to the music. The judges were so impressed that they awarded the band first place yet again!

As usual, the beautiful bayside parade route was extended by brief stops at local establishments to entertain, and replenish precious bodily fluids. After a short concert in the park, the City of Sausalito hosted lunch for the 40-odd musicians (or is that 40 odd musicians?).

The Band was directed by Chris Bailey, StuD ’73, and managed by Jerry Taylor, SM ’69. We are planning on doing this event again in 2004 - plan on being part of the fun!

Cal Band alumnus and Pixar animation wiz Eliot Smyrl (trumpet ’83, StuD ’87) was given the exciting opportunity to work on the hit movie “Finding Nemo,” which hit movie theaters this spring.

“I was asked to work on Nemo for one specific project: I added inverse kinematics to the fin package,” Smyrl said. “Put another way, I added some animation controls to the fin that they used for all the spiny fish fins in the whole film.”

Smryl likes to tell people that this means he worked on every fish character in the film, which sounds like a lot of work for just one guy! “Well, there was just one (fin) for pectorals, dorsals, ventrals, and tails, that was applied to every fish. It got shaped and colored differently, of course, but the underlying program is the same,” said Smyrl.

His upcoming project may be another hit: He is currently working as one of the lead technical folks on the upcoming animated film “Cars” (working title). Look for it, and a credit for band alum Eliot Smyrl, in theaters in 2005!
