My Early Life (cont.)At 17, my father died and the Kent County clerk of peace, Nicholas Ridgely became my guardianAt only the age of twenty-two, I was commissioned as the High Sherriff of Kent CountyAt thirty, I was elected as a representative in the colonial legislatureMain Events in My LifeMain Events (cont.)In 1776 I signed the Declaration of IndependenceDelaware representatives Thomas McKean and George Read were in disagreement in the matter of Independence so my vote decided the matter for the Colony of Delaware

I did not travel far from Delaware, where I was bornHowever I an famous for my ride from Dover, DE to Philadelphia PAI was riding there so I could cast my vote on the Declaration of Independence and decide for the Colony of Delaware whether to support it or not
