TheCadillacSevilleisaluxurycarthatwasmanufacturedbytheCadillacMotorCarDivisionofAmericanautomakerGeneralMotorsfrom1975to2004,asasmallersizedtopofthelineCadillac.Thenameof"Cadillac'sfirstsmallcar"wasselectedoverarevivalofLaSalleandtheGMdesignstaff'spreference,LaScala,primarilybecause,notesGMMarketingDirectorGordonHorsburgh,"Ithadnonegatives."[1]TheinitialsuggestionwasinfactLeland,honoringthemake'sfounder,butitwasrejectedbecausemostbuyerswouldn'tgetthereferenceandbecauseHenryLelandhadalsofoundedCadillac'srivalLincoln.

SevilleisaSpanishprovinceandthecapitalcityofthatprovince,renownedforitshistoryanditstreasuresofartandarchitecture.TheSpanishmasterpaintersDiegoVelzquezandBartolomEstebanMurillowerefromSeville.TheSevillenamefirstenteredusebyCadillacasthedesignationforthetwodoorhardtopversionofthe1956CadillacEldorado.1960wasthelastmodelyearfortheEldoradoSeville.

TheSeville,introducedinMay1975,wasCadillac'sanswertotherisingpopularityofluxuryimportsintheU.S.fromEurope,suchasMercedesBenzandBMW.GMplannerswerebecomingconcernedthatthedivision'soncevauntedimageas"Thestandardoftheworld"wasfadingasthe1970sunfolded,especiallyamongtheyoungergenerationofcarbuyers.Thus,theSevillewasdesignedwiththeideaofwinningbackyoungimportowners.Overtimetheyhadevolved,becomingquiteluxuriousandevenmoreexpensivethanthemuchlargerCadillacs.Asthemarketshareoftheseimportscontinuedtoclimb,itbecameobviousthatthetraditionalAmericanautomotiveparadigmof"biggerequalsbetter"wasnolongerinfulleffectinthemarketplace.TheSevillebecamethesmallestandmostexpensivemodelinthelineup,turningCadillac'straditionalmarketingandpricingstrategyupsidedown.Inaddition,importswerepopularwithayoungeraudiencewhileCadillacbuyerswereheavilyslantedtotheover50agegroup.TheSevillewasthuspartofanattempttorejuvenatethemake'simage.

InitiallybasedontherearwheeldriveXbodyplatformthatunderpinnedtheChevroletNova(aunibodywithaboltonsubframe,commontobothGMXandFbodies),theSeville'sunibodyandchassiswereextensivelyreengineeredandupgradedfromthathumbleoriginanditwasawardedtheuniquedesignation"Kbody"(ratherthan"Xspecial"followingtheformatoftheAspecialChevroletMonteCarlo/PontiacGrandPrixandBspecialBuickRiviera).Cadillacstylistsaddedacrisp,angularbodythatsetthetoneforGMstylingforthenextdecade,alongwithawidetrackstancegivingcarasubstantial,premiumappearance.Awidechromegrilleflankedbyquadruplerectangularheadlampswithnarrowparkingandsignallampsjustbelowfilledtheheaderpanel,whilesmallwraparoundrectangulartaillampsplacedattheoutermostcornersofthereargavetheappearanceofalower,leaner,andwidercar.ThewraparoundtaillightsmighthavecomefromadesignsketchofarejectedCoupeDeVilleconcept.[6]

SevilleengineerschosetheXbodyplatforminsteadoftheGermanOpelDiplomatinresponsetoGM'sbudgetrestrictionsGMexecutivesfeltreengineeringanOpelwouldbemorecostlythanthecorporateXcar.AnotherproposalduringthedevelopmentoftheSevillewasafrontwheeldrivelayoutsimilartotheCadillacEldorado.ThisproposalalsometwithbudgetconcernssincethetransaxleusedfortheEldoradowasproducedonalimitedbasissolelyforEbody(Eldorado/Toronado)production,alongsidetheGMCmotorhomeofthemid1970s(whichhasaderivativeoftheEplatformdrivetrain).

ThiswasthefirsttimeCadillacbeganengineeringoneofitsvehiclesbasedoncomponentspreviouslyusedinaChevroletmodel.

Introducedinmid1975andbilledasthenew"internationallysized"Cadillac,theSevillewasalmost1,000pounds(450kg)lighterthanthefullsizedDeville.TheSevillewasthusmorenimbleandeasiertopark,aswellasremainingattractivetocustomerswiththefullcomplementofCadillacfeatures.MoreexpensivethaneveryotherCadillacmodel(excepttheSeries75Fleetwoodfactorylimousines)atUS$12,479,theSevillewasmodestlysuccessfulinthemarketplace.Itspawnedseveralimitators,includingastheLincolnVersailles,andlatertheChryslerLeBaron/FifthAvenue.ToensurethequalityoftheinitialproductionrunofSevilles,thefirst2,000unitsproducedwereidenticalincolor(Georgiansilver)andequipment.Thisenabledworkersto"rampup"tobuildingdifferentconfigurations.Total1976Sevilleproductionwas43,772vehicles.

EarlySevillesproducedbetweenApril1975(atotalof16,355)tothecloseofthe1976modelyearwerethefirstCadillacstousethesmallerGMwheelboltpattern(5lugswitha4.75in(121mm)boltcirclethe20032009XLRalsousesthispattern).ThefirstSevillessharedonlyastrictminorityofcomponentswiththeengineeringstartingpoint,theGMXBody.Thereardrumsmeasured11in(280mm)andweresimilartotheonesusedwiththeNova9C1(policeoption)andAbody(Chevelle,Cutlass,Regal,LeMans)

intermediatestationwagons.Startingwiththe1977modelyear,productionSevillesusedthelarger5lug5inchboltcirclecommontofullsizeChevroletpassengercars(197176),Cadillacs,Buicks,Oldsmobiles,Pontiacs,and1/2tonChevrolet/GMClighttrucksandvans.Italsoreceivedreardiscbrakes,adesignwhichwouldsurfaceayearlaterasanoptionontheFbodyPontiacTransAm.197576modelshadamandatoryvinyltopduetothefactthattheroofsectionwasoriginallytooledupintwopartstherearsectionaroundtheCpillarwaspressedespeciallyforCadillac,andaregularXbodysedanroofpressingwasusedfortheforwardparts.Duetocustomerdemand,apaintedsteelroofwasofferedbeginningin1977,whichrequiredanewfullroofstamping.1977Sevilleproductionincreasedslightlyto45,060vehicles.

TheenginewasanOldsmobilesourced350cuin(5.7L)V8,fittedwithBendix/Boschelectronicallycontrolledfuelinjection.ThissystemgavetheSevillesmoothdrivabilityandperformancethatwasusuallylackinginotherdomesticcarsofthisearlyemissionscontrolera.Poweroutputwas180hp(130kW),gasmileagewas17MPGinthecityand23MPGonthehighway(thelargerDevilleandFleetwoodwerestillgettingsingledigitgasmileage)andperformancewasrestrainedwithzeroto60mph(97km/h)taking11.5seconds.Adiesel350cuin(5.7L)LF9V8wasaddedin1978,thefirstdieselengineofferedinpassengervehiclesinAmerica.Asaresult,theenginewasknowntobepoorinbothperformanceandreliabilityduetothefactmostownerstreateditlikeagasengine.

TheSevillewasmanufacturedinIranunderthebrandnameof"CadillacIran"from1978to1987byParsKhodro,whichwasknownas"IranGeneralMotors"beforetheIslamicRevolution.Atotalof2,653CadillacsweremadeinIranduringthisperiod.ThismadeIrantheonlycountryassemblingCadillacsoutsidetheU.S.until1997whenCadillacCaterawasbasedonOpelOmegaandbuiltinGermanyforU.S.market.CadillacBLS,builtinSwedenforEuropeanmarket,butneveravailableinU.S.market,wasintroducedin2006.EventhoughCadillacAllantehaditsItalianorigin,itsfinalassemblywasdoneintheU.S.

From1978through1988,SevillewasavailablewiththeElegantepackage.For1978thispackageaddedauniqueblack/silvertwotoneexteriorpaintcombinationand"perforatedstyle"leatherseatsinlightgrayonly.Realwirewheelswerestandardaswereahostofoptions.In1979,asecondcolorcombinationwasadded,atwotonecoppershadeandamatchingleatherinterior.In1985,amonotonepaintcombinationbecameavailablehowevernumerousdualshadecombinationsremainedmorepopular.ThepriceforthispackageincreasedovertimebeginningatUS$2,600in1978andpeakingatUS$3,995in1987and'88.

1978CadillacTripComputer

TheCadillacTripComputer"Tripmaster"wasauniqueoptionalfeatureavailablemidyearduringthe1978andalsothe1979modelyearsatacostofUS$920.Thisoptionreplacedthetwostandardneedletypegaugeswithanelectronicdigitalreadoutforthespeedometerandremainingfuel.Italsoreplacedthequartz



digitalclockwithanLEDdisplayclock.Thetripcomputeralsoincludednumerouscalculationsatthetouchofabuttononasmallpanellocatedtotherightofthesteeringwheel.Theseincludedmilestoempty,milespergallon,andadestinationarrivaltime(whichneededtobeprogrammedbythedriver,toestimatearrivaltimebasedonmilesremaining).ThoughprecededbytheBritish1976AstonMartinLagondasedan,SevillewasthefirstAmericanautomobiletoofferfullelectronicinstrumentation.Althoughthe1978LincolnContinentalMarkVwasavailablewitha"MilesToEmpty"feature(i.e.,anLEDreadoutofmileslefttotravelbasedonthefuelremaining),Lincolndidnotofferfullelectronicinstrumentationuntil1980.AdigitalinstrumentclusterwasnotavailableontheSevilleandEldoradoagainuntiltheir1981through1985configurations.Althoughthe"TripComputer"itselfwasnolongeravailable,thenewfor1980electronicheatingandairconditioningcontrols,andanewfor1980electronicfueldatasystemontheinstrumentpanel,replacedsomeofthefunctionsthatwereprovidedpreviously.

In1979,SevillewasavailablewithanaftermarketpackageprovidedbyaMiamibasedfirm.AnagreementwithGucci,thefamousItalianleathergoodsandclothingcompany,producedalimitedissue"GucciSeville".Availableinonlythreecolorswhite,black,andmediumbrowntheexteriorfeaturedmanyindicatorsoftheGucciidentity.AvinyltopcoveringonlythecpillarandfeaturingthefamousGucciinterlockingdouble"G"fabricpattern,theinterlocking"G"onthewirewheelcovers,ared/greenstripeacrosstheloweredgeofthetrunklid,andaninterlockingdouble"G"hoodornamentdecoratedtheexterior.Inside,theheadrestsandseatsworethedouble"G"patternwithaleathertrim,theheadlinerworethepattern,andtheinstrumentpanelboretheiconicGucciscriptabovetheglovebox.InsidethetrunkwasafivepiecesetofGucciluggage.ThecostofthispackagepushedtheSevillepricetagtoaboutUS$23,000.

ItalianoperasingerLucianoPavarottiwasseendrivingaGucciSevilleduringhissegmentontheCBStelevisionnewsprogram60Minutesinthelateseventies.

TheFordMotorCompanyhadsuccesswithdesignereditionLincolnautomobilesinthemidseventiesthroughthenineties.However,Cadillacneverproducedaninhousedesignernamedproduct.

19761979SevilleConvertible

Anumberofcustomcoachbuildersmademodificationstothe19751979Seville,toincludeshortened2seat2doorconvertibles,a2doorconvertiblewithabackseat,a2doorpickuptruck,2doorcoupes,2and4doorlengthenedhoodSevilleswithafakesparetireineachfrontfender,andalengthenedwheelbasestandard4doorSeville.[7]

Marketperformance

Overall,thefirstgenerationSevillewasnotthesuccessGMhadhopedfor.Buyerswereturnedoffbyitshavingahigherpricetagthanthestandardmodels(whichroserapidlyeachyearduringtheinflationplaguedlate'70s).Italsofailedtoattracttheyoungerimportbuyingaudience,especiallysinceluxurymakestendedtosellbasedonbrandloyaltyratherthanpriceorfeatures.OneratherembarrassingstudyofSevillebuyersdiscoveredthattheywerepopularwithseniorcitizenswhowantedaCadillacinasmaller,moremaneuverablepackage.

ThefirstgenerationSevillehadprovedquitesuccessful,howeveritfailedinitsprimarymissionofpoachingimportbuyersandmarketingresearchindicatedthatthecarwaspopularwitholderwomenwhowantedaCadillacinasmaller,moremaneuverablesize.Forthe1980modelyear,CadillacmovedtheSevilletothe114in(2,900mm)wheelbaseKbody,basedonthefrontwheeldriveEbodyEldorado,BuickRivieraandOldsmobileToronado.Returningtosomeoftheoriginalconceptsfloatedforthe1975edition(theMarch2008issueofCollectibleAutomobilefeaturedanearlyconceptofwhatevolvedintothedownsized1977CadillacDeVillesandFleetwoodsoneoftheconceptswhichwaswithdrawnlookssimilartothesecondgenerationSeville),TherearstylingwasintendedtoinvokethelookofDaimlersofapastera(thoughBritishLeylandwerebuildingcarswiththisfeatureeventhen).IntheUS,thebustlebackstylingwasimitatedbythe19821987LincolnContinentalsedan,andthe19811983ChryslerImperialcoupe.

Inhiphopculture,thisgenerationofSevilleswereknownas"slantbacks."Saleswererespectableatfirst,butdisastrousexperimentationwithdieselengines(thestandardenginein1980models)andtheillfated1981V864variabledisplacementengine(1980stechnologycouldnotmakeitworkreliably),alongwithpoorqualitycontrolandlacklusterperformancefromenginesseverelydetunedtomeetmorestringentCAFEstandards,begantoerodetheSeville'sstandinginthemarketplace.Anewbutunderpowered4.1literV8wasfittedtopost1981models.Itwaspronetotheblockbecomingporousandcoolantmixingwiththeoil,resultingincatastrophicenginefailure.Some19811982modelswerealsofittedwithanoptional4.1literBuickV6,whichwasareliableenoughengine,butwasnotpowerfulenoughfortheSeville'sweightandperformancewaslacking.

edgesofthenewaerodynamicaesthetic.TheseriesfeaturedatransversemountedV8drivingthefrontwheels.Thesmallersizeandconservativestylingwereregardedasbland,andcustomersstayedaway.Despitethelackofpopularity,thenewSeville/EldoradochassisfeaturedanadvancedtransmissionandenginecontrolsystemthatofferedEPAfuelconsumptionfiguresofnearly30mpgUS(7.8L/100km36mpgimp)onthehighwayusingasmallfuelinjectedV8.Thenewmodelfeaturedaworldwideproductioncarfirstacomputersystemthatmonitoredthecar'ssystemsandtheengine.TheBCM/ECM(BodyComputerModule/EngineComputerModule)waspairedwithanelectronicdashboardusinghighintensityvacuumfluorescentdisplaysandutilizedGM'sexpertisederivedfromtheacquisitionofHughesElectronics,makersofcommunicationsandspysatellites.Unfortunately,withsaleswaybelowexpectationsthenewmodelwasconsideredadisaster,andanexteriorrefreshwasrushedfor1987asa1988model.ThiswasthefinalCadillacSevillegenerationtohaveannualfaceliftsforthegrilles.

In1990,theSevillegotanewfuelinjectionsystemwhichbroughtthehorsepowerupto180.Frontparklampswerenolongermountedinthefenderonanymodels,andtheSevilleSTSunderwentsomemajorchanges.Theseincludednewsideandrearbodycolorfasciaswhichgavethecarasportier,moreaggressivelook.Alsoaddedwasdualexhaustwithbrightstainlessoutlets,alargerSTStrunkscript,standardTevesantilockbrakingsystemwithreardiscs,and16inchmachinefinishedalloywheelsonGoodyearEagleGT+4tires.Adriver'ssideairbagwasalsoaddedtoSevilleandSTS.WhiletheenginewasthesameasusedinregularSevillemodels,thetransmissionhadaspecialfinaldriveratioof3:33:1forbetteracceleration.The1990STSalsoreceiveditsownbodydesignationof6KY69,andpricesstartedat
