Các em thiếu nhi Đoàn Thánh Giuse, Minnesota, Miền Trung; múa lân cho văn nghệ Tết của Giáo Xứ

Tết Tây Phương và Tết Việt Nam khác nhau chỗ nào? Tết Tây Phương rất

rầm rộ bên ngoài nhất là tại thành phố Nữu Ước. Số lượng người khổng lồ

tuôn đổ về khu vực Times Square có tiếng để đón giao thừa dưới những luồng ánh sáng rực rỡ qua tiếng

pháo bông mang hình hài tân thời thật hấp dẫn. Người ta cũng bị lôi cuốn qua những giọng ca thời đại

của những ca sĩ lừng danh. Tuy rất nhộn nhịp, nhưng niềm vui của Tết tây phương là một cuộc vui chơi

ngẳn ngủi bên ngoài. Sau đêm giao thừa thì Tết cũng chấm dứt. Tết diễn ra trong một đêm ngắn ngủi.

Mọi người trở lại công sở sáng hôm sau.

Tết Việt Nam thì ngược lại. Tết được diễn ra trong một chu kỳ mừng lễ kéo dài khoảng một tháng.

Trước Tết người ta chuẩn bị nao nức như sửa sang nhà cửa, quét dọn bàn thờ, mua hoa và trái cây, làm

bánh…. Trong ba ngày Tết người Việt Nam đến nhà thờ, đến chùa, rồi Tết ông bà cha mẹ, vú bõ, thầy

cô, láng giềng… Sau ba ngày Tết lại tiếp tục đến với những người thân láng giềng mà chưa có cơ hội

thăm vào ba ngày Tết. Người Việt Nam diễn tả ba ngày Tết như sau: “ Mồng một tết cha, mồng hai tết

chú, mồng ba tết thầy.” Câu nói này diễn tả thời gian vui dài của Tết trong văn hóa Việt Nam. Thời

gian kéo dài này chắc chắn có lý do đặc biệt của nó.

Không ai nghi ngờ được tính chất linh thiêng của Tết. Trong ngày Tết mọi người Việt Nam không phân

biệt tôn giáo hướng lòng về Thượng Đế để cảm tạ tri ân, cầu nguyện cho ông bà tổ tiên là đấng sinh

thành dưỡng dục, chúc thọ ông bà và cha mẹ đang chung sống trong mái ấm gia đình, mừng tuổi vú bõ,

thầy cô, bà con láng giềng xa gần, bỏ qua tình sứt mẽ cũ để nhường chỗ cho yêu thương. Ý nghĩa linh

thiêng của Tết được truyền sang từ đời này sang đời khác.

Đối với người công giáo tính chất linh thiêng của Tết được đặt trên nền tảng Kinh Thánh. Ngươi hãy

yêu mến Đức Chúa, Thiên Chúa của ngươi, hết lòng, hết linh hồn và hết trí khôn ngươi; ngươi phải yêu

người thân cận như chính mình (Mt 22: 37,39). Hai giới răn này được truyền lại từ đời này sang đời

khác không khác gì câu chuyện của người Do Thái xưa. Sau 40 năm hành trình dài trong sa mạc và

trước khi bước vào miền đất hứa, Ông Maisen nhắn nhủ với dân Do Thái như thế này: “Nghe đây, hỡi

Israel! Đức Chúa, Thiên Chúa chúng ta, là Đức Chúa duy nhất. Hãy yêu mến Đức Chúa, Thiên Chúa

của anh em, hết lòng hết dạ, hết sức anh em. Những lời này tôi truyền cho anh em hôm nay, anh em

phải ghi tạc vào lòng. Anh em phải lập lại những lời ấy cho con cái, phải nói lại cho chúng lúc ngồi

trong nhà cũng như lúc đi đường, khi đi ngủ cũng như khi thức dậy, phải buộc những lời ấy vào tay làm

dấu, mang trên trán làm phù hiệu, phải viết lên khung cửa nhà anh em và lên cửa thành của anh

em.” (Đệ Nhị Luật 6:4-9)

Cảm nhận được tính chất linh thiêng của ngày Tết, chúng ta mới có thể mừng Xuân đúng với ý nghĩa

thâm sâu của nó. Trước tiên hãy tri ân cảm tạ Thiên Chúa là Đấng tạo dựng nên vũ trụ và chính con

người ta. Điều này quả là tuyệt vời vì Thiên Chúa thấy mọi sự Người làm ra quả là tốt đẹp! (St 1: 31).

Kế đến chúng ta hãy kính nhớ các bậc tổ tiên là đấng đã sinh

thành dưỡng dục con cháu qua nhiều thế hệ, đã truyền lại

những gia sản văn hóa và tôn giáo, nhất là đời sống đức tin

mà chúng ta đã nhận biết Thiên Chúa. Các bậc tổ tiên đã

thấu hiểu và thực hành Lời Chúa: “Những lời này tôi truyền

cho anh em hôm nay, anh em phải ghi tạc vào lòng. Anh em

phải lập lại những lời ấy cho con cái, phải nói lại cho chúng

lúc ngồi trong nhà cũng như lúc đi đường, khi đi ngủ cũng

như khi thức dậy …” (Đnl 6: 6-7).

Ông bà cha mẹ thời đại chúng ta đang thực hành Lời Chúa

cách triệt để. Biết rằng con mình than phiền học Giáo lý

Việt Ngữ là khó và mất giờ, nhiều cha mẹ vẫn ép buộc con

tham gia học giáo lý, Việt Ngữ để chúng biết chúng là người

công giáo và là người Viêt Nam. Biết rằng con mình thích

ngồi ở nhà chơi games hay phim ảnh, nhiều cha mẹ vẫn ép

buộc con tham gia Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể để chúng biết tôn

thờ Thiên Chúa hết lòng hết sức và hết trí khôn và yêu mến

tha nhân như chính mình vậy. (Mt 22: 37,39). Rất nhiều em

Huynh Trưởng đã cảm nhận được hiệu quả của việc bị ép

buộc tham gia vào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể khi còn là một em bé lười biếng ham chơi. Chính vì sự ép

buộc đó mà trong các Giáo xứ và cộng đồng Việt Nam nở rộ nhiều gương mặt trẻ đang dấn thân hăng

say hoạt động đáng lấy làm vinh dự. Rất nhiều các Cha và giáo dân người Mỹ ngưỡng mộ khi thấy

người trẻ Việt Nam ngồi đầy những hàng ghế trong nhà thờ. Giáo xứ người Mỹ vắng bóng con trẻ có lẽ

vì thiếu ép buộc và không có đoàn Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể.

Cha xin chia sẻ niềm vui với những cha mẹ đã ép buộc con tham gia vào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể vì đó là

mang cho các em lẽ sống. Quả thật! Các em đó thật sự đang sống, sống đức tin vì đức tin không có việc

làm là đức tin chết. (Gc 7: 17)

Với chiếc khăn đỏ, khăn người lãnh đạo trên vai, chúng ta dùng giây phút linh thiêng của ngày Xuân để

tri ân Thiên Chúa đã ban cho chúng ta ân sủng để nhận biết Ngài. Trong giây phút linh thiêng của ngày

Xuân hãy bày tỏ tâm tình yêu mến và cảm tạ ông bà cha mẹ đang chung sống trong mái ấm gia đình.

Cám ơn các ngài đã và đang truyền lại cho chúng ta một gia sàn văn hóa Việt Nam, một kho tàng đức tin

để chúng ta biết hít thở trong ân sủng và bình an của Thiên Chúa. Tâm tình tri ân Thiên Chúa và ông bà

tổ tiên không phải được kết thúc qua một đêm như Tết tây phương, nhưng phải được kéo dài như Tết

Việt Nam.

Trước thềm năm mới của Xuân Quý Tỵ, kính chúc quý Đức Ông, quý Cha, quý Trợ Úy, Trợ Tá, Huynh

Trưởng, Phụ Huynh cùng toàn thể các em đoàn sinh dễ thương được tràn đầy ân sủng, an khang, và

thịnh vượng.

Greetings from the President

“Wishing you a happy New Year!” is a familiar expression vocalized to wish one

another happiness. For most of us, happiness may appear in the form of job securi-

ty, financial stability, or material wealth. For the poor and rich alike, the desire to

attain more is inevitable as it is a fact of human nature. Our society is inundated

with constant media advertisements plaguing our minds to pursue material goods as

though we are impoverished and deficient without them. Research has shown the

quality of life among people living a superfluous life tend to be lacking because beyond the excess materi-

als, their lives are reduced to mere emptiness.

According to late Blessed John Paul

II, “It is Jesus that you seek when

you dream of happiness; He is wait-

ing for you when nothing else you

find satisfies you;…it is He who

urges you to shed the masks of a

false life; it is He who reads in your

heart your most genuine choices.” It

is clear from this excerpt that true

happiness exists when we have an

intimate relationship with Jesus in

the Eucharist, the One who loves us

unconditionally.

As we begin the Lunar New Year in

conjunction with the Year of Faith, I

ask all members of the Vietnamese

Eucharistic Youth Society to

strengthen your relationship with Jesus, the ultimate source of happiness, through daily prayers, receiving

the sacraments, and professing your faith. In other words, live the Eucharistic Day. As the Holy Father elo-

quently stated, happiness in the Year of Faith is the rediscovery of the joy of believing and the enthusiasm

for communicating the faith.

On behalf of the National Executive Committee, I extend to all Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants (clergy and

layperson), Youth-Leader Trainers, Youth-Leaders, and youth members of all rank a truly blessed and hap-

py Lunar New Year. May Jesus in the Eucharist through the intercession of Mary and the Saints, leads us to

everlasting happiness as individuals and as families.

Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể: My life, Journey, and Vocation.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21).

As a Huynh Trưởng, this passage has given me tremendous outlook through-

out my service to the youth of Phong Trào. With it, I can testify that my

journey within even one year of Thiếu Nhi can speak for what seems to be a

lifetime of opportunities and grace. For with Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể, I have

found my call to serve. This is my story:

I’d always take Thiếu Nhi for granted when I was younger, joining and leav-

ing left to right. But it wasn’t until the day that my đoàn became inactive, to

make me realize how important the foundations of Thiếu Nhi has been root-

ed in my church. Becoming a Dự Trưởng at the age of 15, to help my older

sister revive our already-one-year inactive đoàn, was no easy endeavor. Be-

ginning with a team of 7 inexperienced Dự Trưởng and a Cap 1 Huynh

Trưởng, not many people believed in us. However, that made all of the dif-

ference in how we chose to carry out our mission. Bringing back Thiếu Nhi

for the kids also meant shaping ourselves into respectable leaders of Phong

Trào. Although there were those moments that I did let my ambitions get the

best of me, I have come to realize that Thiếu Nhi was more than just ambi-

tions in my life. Becoming a Huynh Trưởng became more than just earning

respect, keeping on top of things, going to every training camp, and knowing

every possible element of Phong Trào. Rather, Thiếu Nhi has changed my

life when I learned to value the purest intentions and the hard work from các

em. Now almost 21 years old, I can testify what my younger brothers and

sisters in my Doan have taught me.

Looking back, I couldn’t have accomplished what I have been doing in Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể if it wasn’t for the

motivation of the kids. To see them look forward to attending Thiếu Nhi after their Sunday school classes and wit-

nessing their motivation to defend Jesus Christ, makes all of the hard work, that much more worthwhile. Perhaps it

may seem too cliché to say that the only element every successful Huynh Trưởng needs, is to love the children.

However, to say it is one thing, but to be able to feel it on the inside, is on a whole different dimension. Working

with Nghĩa Sĩ and Hiệp Sĩ in the past couple of years has made me realize one very important aspect as I strive to

be a better leader, and that is to lead by example. By being able to teach and share with the kids, I’m also keeping

myself away from the negative outlooks and connotations that modern society may incriminate on me. This is es-

sentially a blessing in disguise.

But on an even more serious note, Thiếu Nhi has changed my life because it has helped me carry my own cross and

also learn to help others carry theirs as well. Perhaps I am too young to teach Nghĩa Sĩ and Hiệp Sĩ, however, I‘ve

never felt so needed in my life. To receive phone calls during the late hours in the night from troubled hearts, seek-

ing to pray or for some words of comfort, my mission as a Huynh Trưởng became even more real. I‘m not much

older than them, however I feel that God has given me purpose to be their older brother and to listen to them. For I

know not what their future may hold, but I know that together in Jesus, we can bring a better tomorrow. By learning

how to love these kids as my own siblings, my call to serve gets elevated to an even higher calling.

My dream is to help the kids and to be there for them when they need me. For my treasure and my heart are the

kids. Realistically speaking, even a Huynh Trưởng has boundaries and is limited to serve the youth at times. Which

is why I feel that I can help them even more, when I answer to my vocation to join the Priesthood. This is no longer

just an ambition, but rather a goal in my life. I know that there are teenagers out there who have lost faith and have

struggled for most of their lives. I want to change that, and I want to be their voice. I feel that I can reach out more

to the youth by answering God‘s call. I‘ve always avoided the question, but I believe that Thiếu Nhi has given me

courage to accept that call. And although God may have

already opened the door, I just need to find enough courage

to walk through. Which is why after graduating, I will be

joining either the Peace Corps or the Jesuit Volunteer

Corps to see the world in the perspective of God‘s humani-

tarian. Putting everything I‘ve learned in Thiếu Nhi to the

test by serving the youth of the world, I believe that as a

Huynh Trưởng of Phong Trào, I can touch many hearts.

Only then can I humbly be a servant of Christ and serve in

the Holy Orders.

While the dream of one day becoming a Tuyen Uy of

Phong Trào is still far away, I can honestly say that Thiếu

Nhi has given me more than I‘ve ever expected from my-

self. My life became even more beautiful when Thiếu Nhi

Thánh Thể became apart of it. For Thieu Nhi is a foundation built upon love, faith, hope, and the purest of hearts.

Phong Trào has established itself as a home for me and the kids are its most valuable treasures. As a Huynh

Trưởng, I take it upon myself to help them realize how valuable they really are. For this seemingly undying passion

for this organization, I can proudly say that Thiếu Nhi has changed my life. Don Bosco Ho Quang Damien, MTN

Tây Nam wanted to honor the best of the best Huynh Trưởng and Trợ Tá selected by each individual Đoàn to be recognized at the

most recent Appreciation Dinner (Tiệc Tri Ân) with a theme of “Colors of Christmas.” Their hard work throughout the year, their

endless hours of effort and commitment to ensure the success of their Đoàn means a lot not only to their Đoàn alone but to

everyone. They shine as bright as the North Star and always bring a smile to everyone around them! Thank you for all you have

done and continue to do for the success of your Đoàn, Liên Đoàn, and Miền Tây Nam !

With a New Year comes New Beginnings! Before the year ended, Đoàn Rạng Đông in Corona, California, celebrated the opening

of Đoàn With 200+ đoàn sinh and 25+ Huynh Trưởng, they are already making wonderful strides for a strong and successful

Đoàn! Please join us in Congratulating and welcoming them to Miền Tây Nam as well as Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể.

While ending 2012 with a bang, we bring in 2013 full swing. This year is already flying by with lots of plans ahead and fun

activities in store. Each Đoàn is currently preparing for Tết and Văn Nghệ within the coming weeks! As soon as Tết is behind us,

Múa Lân, which is often translated to Lion Dance…. Well, it’s actually not a lion. The Lân is an animal

between a Lion and a Dragon, a symbol of strength in the Vietnamese culture to scare away bad spirits.

Hoa Đào, peach flowers, are a symbol of life and good fortune and bringing one home promises some-

thing positive.

As the first day and first week of Tết will determine one’s path for the next twelve month, it is important

to start off right, avoiding arguments as well as words and actions that bring negativity. Instead, focus on

good deeds and forgiving others and treating all with generosity.

As you “Chúc Mừng Năm Mới” and “Cung Chúc Tân Xuân”, don’t forget to wish others (specifically

elders) prosperity and luck. May it be “sống lâu trăm tuổi” (Living a long life of 100 years), “an khang

thịnh vượng” (Security, good health, and prosperity), or “vạn sự như ý” (May myriad things go accord-

ing to your will), faith-filled year, forgive the past, do good deeds during the present, and live well in

the future.

Bishop David L. Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the Committee on

Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB),

offers ―10 Things to Remember for Lent‖:

1. Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths

with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Commandments, 7 sacraments, 3

persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan—Prayer,

Fasting and Almsgiving—as the three things we need to work on during the

season.

2. It’s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40

days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to

Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him.

3. It’s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless

Fridays, and our personal disciplines interspersed, Lent is the only time many

Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that‘s why it gets all the attention.

―What are you giving up for Lent? Hotdogs? Beer? Jelly beans?‖ It‘s almost a

game for some of us, but fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us

turn away from sin and toward Christ.

4. It’s a time to work on discipline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time

to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving something up, it

can be doing something positive. ―I‘m going to exercise more. I‘m going to

pray more. I‘m going to be nicer to my family, friends and coworkers.‖

5. It’s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that

it‘s about more than self-control – it‘s about finding aspects of yourself that

are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of

Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by

suffering, dying with Christ and being resurrected in a purified form.

6. Don’t do too much. It‘s tempting to make Lent some ambitious period of

personal reinvention, but it‘s best to keep it simple and focused. There‘s a

reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire

lives growing closer to God. Don‘t try to cram it all in one Lent. That‘s a recipe

for failure.

7. Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals

for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. When we fast, we

realize we‘re all just one meal away from hunger. In both cases, Lent shows us

our weakness. This can be painful, but recognizing how helpless we are makes

8. Be patient with yourself. When we‘re confronted with our own weakness

during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. ―What a bad person I

am!‖ But that‘s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see

ourselves as he does, with unconditional love.

9. Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent,

we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry,

suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is

almsgiving. It‘s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection

plate; it‘s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a

way of sharing the experience of God‘s unconditional love.

10. Learn to love like Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and

self-denial brings us closer to loving like Christ, who suffered and poured

himself out unconditionally on cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the

desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his

help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him.

Q. Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday,

there are 46.

A. It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent." Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present configuration of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.

Q. I've noticed that restaurants and grocery stores advertise specials on expensive types of fish and seafood on Fridays during Lent. Some of my Catholic friends take advantage of these deals, but somehow I don't feel right treating myself to the lobster special on Fridays during

Lent.

A. While fish, lobster and other shellfish are not considered meat and can be consumed on days of abstinence, indulging in the lavish buffet at your favorite seafood place sort of misses the point. Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.
