Rev. nelis du toit served on the Board since its inception in 2001. He led CABSA since January 2005, first as manager and later as director. He resigned in 2011 and left CABSA and the Board at the end of June. We will remember Nelis for many things, but especially for his commitment, sacrifice, passion, dedication to excellence and stewardship, theological insight and for his leadership and friendship.

dR Xolile simon (Chairperson) lectures in the Department of Missiology in the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch.

dR pieteR FouRie (Vice Chairperson) is the Executive Head of Bible Media and has served on the CABSA Board since 2008.

ms lyn vAn Rooyen is the Executive Director of CABSA and has been the CARIS programme manager since 2004.

ms Ann mARy GAthiGiA is the Gender and HIV and AIDS manager of PACSA.

ms nomvuyo BABA is the Managing Director for Mfe-sane and trained as a Social Worker.

pRoF ChRistinA lAndmAn heads UNISA’s Research Insti-tute for Theology and Religion and serves as minister of a rural URCSA congregation near Dullstroom.

ms loGy muRRAy is currently working for World Vision International as Global Advisor: Faith Partnerships on HIV and Health.

mR phApile Celesi is responsible for African languages at the Nehemia Bible Institute.

SOUND GOVERNANCE S ound governance is ensured by management policies and procedures, a management commit­tee that assist the director and a Board that is ultimately accountable for the implementation of the aims and objectives of the organisation.

The CABSA Board consists of key role players represen ting different churches, faith based organisa­tions and aca demic institutions relevant to implemen­ting the mission of CABSA. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the CABSA Board and Management Committee members for their commitment to ensure the sound governance of the organisation.

CABSA has been called a “grace led” organisation. This becomes very apparent when reflecting on the breadth and depth of activities of this small organisation!

2011 was a year in which CABSA looked back and reflected on the growth

and progress of the organisation, but also looked forward at how much remains to

be done.

We celebrated the organisation’s tenth anniversary and also faced the end of an era

when we greeted the director, Rev Nelis du Toit in June and Lucinda Leppan two

months later. Lyn van Rooyen, programme manager of CARIS, was appointed as the

new director.

Although the continued international economic instability is increasingly affecting

CABSA’s financial position, the overwhelming feeling when

reporting on the work of CABSA, is one of gratitude.

CABSA is firstly grateful to the Lord, for again providing His

grace abundantly to the organisation and all involved but further to every donor, Friend of CABSA, staff member, Board-, Committee- and training team member and CABSA representative. The final thank you is to every Channel of Hope, the trained facilitators who turn CABSA’s dreams into reality.

Looking Back & Looking Forward

CABSA is the friend we need when in need of encouragement, empowerment

and reasons to celebrate God’s love in a time of HIV and AIDS.

Faith Partnerships on HIV and Health

Through advocacy activities CABSA aims to:

ensure that those living with HIV have a voice and that this voice is heard within faith communities,

make the wider HIV community aware of the role and impact of the faith sector in the response to HIV,

address stigma and discrimination, particularly within faith communities and from a theological and Biblical perspective,

address the root causes of vulnerability including gender, poverty, development and justice.

Advocacy activities in this year include providing material for World AIDS Day (WAD) and AIDS Candlelight Memorial services, sending weekly Bible Messages to 625 subscribers, a short story competition, articles in and letters to the press, radio interviews, involvement in petitions and campaigns, including the 16 Day Campaign against Gender-based Violence, and letters to government.

The CABSA Churches, Channels of Hope (CCoH) programme aims to empower Christian leaders with the attitudes, knowledge and skills to guide or assist faith communities in

their journeys towards HIV competence.

During the 7 day facilitator training, each participant is challenged to grow in his or her own journey with God and HIV, with the ultimate purpose of being channels of hope that will make a tangible difference in this world living with HIV.

We are deeply grateful to report the successful completion of 4 facilitator trainings during which 84 new facilitators were trained as channels of hope. Participants came from Cameroon, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, United States of America, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The CCoH material is updated annually. The biggest addition to the 2011 manual was a new chapter on HIV competent faith communities. This chapter aims to assist and challenge facilitators to understand their role in assisting faith communities towards a meaningful HIV response.

Reaching many

We are greatly encouraged by the commitment and involvement seen in feedback reports received from facilitators, some who were trained as long ago as 2003 and 2004.

Some impress with mind-blowing numbers and activities, while others impress with small, but targeted interventions.

It is wonderful to see so many facilitators who are indeed bringing hope and reconciliation in their communities.

In the first 130 feedback reports received, facilitators reported on a wide variety of activities in 2011 that they believed were influenced or motivated by the CCoH programme.

More than 140 workshops involved 4 803 peopleMore than 196 information sessions involved 16 769 peopleMore than 150 other activities and events involved 44 245 peopleAll these reports were sent voluntarily. We are aware of other activities that were not officially reported.

Supporting CCoH facilitatorsCCoH facilitators are challenged throughout their training experience to discover ways in which God can use them to be channels of hope in their respective communi-ties and churches. A mentoring programme was developed over time to support and encourage facilitators in their journeys after the training. With just over 700 facilitators, this is quite a task! We are grateful to have 13 representatives who are each responsi-ble for building and maintaining relationships with facilitators in their region.

Networking provides opportunities to explore synergy and potential cooperation with like-minded organisations, acquire and share knowledge and increase the visibility of CABSA and its services.

CABSA again coordinated the Interfaith Networking and Exhibition space at the SA AIDS Conference and participated in exhibitions and presenta-tions including at the WACC General Assembly for Africa in Kigali and the EAA Consultation in Chiang Mai. The CABSA tenth anniversary celebrations were a networking highlight.

CABSA has formal license agreements with World Vision International and AIDSLink International.

CABSA is represented on Boards and Committees of AIDSLink, PACANet, the AIDS Task Group of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) family in the Western Cape, the AIDS Committee of the Highveld Diocese of the DRC and the Compass Core Partners Group.

CABSA cooperates with a variety of local, regional and international organisations and networks and was represented at more than 180 events with more than 8000 participants in total in 2011.

Knowledge Management

Physical, virtual and electronic information dissemination in 2011 included:nRegular E-newsletters to 880 subscribers;

n145 942 visits to the website and online databases containing more than 5650 different sub-pages including:

nNews items and resources,

nCapacity building and programme management tools,

n Information on 10 600 resources and 515 Bible Messages.

nSocial media such as Facebook and Twitter feed are used to report in real time from conferences and events and for advocacy;

nResource Centres:

n The CARIS and Wellington resource centres provide comprehensive information about HIV and AIDS to a variety of stakeholders,

n Resource centres in faith communities are equipped to provide information in local communities,

n More than 9100 physical resources were distributed.

nCABSA staff wrote or assisted with writing a variety of resources, articles and tools.

CABSA, particularly through the CARIS programme, makes current scientific and theological knowledge available to faith leaders in accessible and understandable ways to guide the practice of community organisations, projects and programmes.
