Efficiency in Automation - A reflection of our company philosophy

As an experienced specialist in automation technology, with solutions for flexible and high flexing cables, cableassemblies, interfaces, current control and cabinet wiring,we have had a focus on efficiency for many years.

LÜTZE defines Efficiency in Automation as the use ofsustainable products and solutions to further increasethe performance of our products in our customers applications.

We realise this by using components for highly efficientcontrol systems, products with above average life cyclesand raising energy efficiency in control cabinets bymeans of the LSC wiring system.

Efficiency in Automation reflects our efforts in striving for efficient working relationships with our customers: in a medium sized family owned company we have short communcation channels and a high level of manufacturing competence.

The value of a product or a solution from LÜTZE is determined by its sustainable qualities. Every innovationwill only be successful in the future if it has a long termpositive effect. Therefore, we provide long lasting as well as highly efficient components.

Thus LÜTZE creates value through efficiency. LÜTZEprovides answers and demonstrates how to handleresources responsibly, with our environment and ourfuture in mind. LÜTZE - Efficiency in Automation

Business Management: Sustainable and forwa

The future is blueSustainable enterprise means thinking and planning ahead, understanding and embedding the belief that long lasting successis more important than short-termprofit maximisation.

This is an attitude that has existedwithin LÜTZE for quite some time.Economic and environmentalresponsibilities complement eachother well and are reflected in thesustainable management and

product policy - and from now inthe SkyBLUE campaign.

We manufacture our products in aresourceful and energy-consciousmanner. We use long lasting,environmentally-friendly materials. And our products, in turn, helpour customers save energy andresources. Good for everyone: for us, for theenvironment, for our customers awin-win-win situation.

How North American codes and standards affect your choice of cables

NEC, NFPA 79 and UL 508A

The National Electrical Code (NEC)is providing rules and regulation forelectrical applications. It also refer-red to as NFPA 70. This codecovers the electrical installation formany areas such as public and pri-vate premises, buildings etc. The NEC is created and updatedevery three years by a technicalcommittee consisting of NFPA mem-bers and industry experts. It is pos-

sible that different States are on dif-ferent versions of the NEC as thetimeframe to adopt a new code mayvary from State to State. Once aState adopted the NEC it becomesa rule that must be followed. TheNEC will only recognize and allowthe use of listed cables or cords forfield wiring connections.NFPA 79 is the electrical standardfor industrial machinery in the

USA. It covers the electric or elec-tronic equipment of electrical machi-nery from a nominal voltage of 600volts or less. The NFPA 79 standardhas provisions regarding wiringpractices that represent best practi-ce. NFPA 79 makes reference to UL

Page 7: Cables according to NEC, NFPA 79 and UL 508A standards · UL 508A is a standardfor industrial control panels covering the enclosu-re as well as the panel in applicati-ons operating

Listed cable but has a special provi-sion for “recognized componentwiring” in article 12.9.UL 508A is a standard for industrialcontrol panels covering the enclosu-re as well as the panel in applicati-ons operating from a voltage of 600volts or less. UL 508A makes refe-rence to UL Listed cable but has aspecial provision for “recognizedcomponent wiring” in article 29.2.

NEC - Regulates the field level

NFPA 79 - Regulates the machine level

UL 508A - Regulates the cabinet level

Codes and standards are not the same. A stan-dard represents a principle or a model in howsomething is being done. You could call it a “best practice”. Standards arealso defined as a level of quality or attainment andallow comparative evaluations.

A code goes a step further and represents a lawor regulation that must be followed when it isgiven statutory force.

The NEC is not federal law but is enforced byadoption by state or municipality.

Electrical wiring in the USA is regulated by theNational Electric Code also referred to in short asthe NEC. The NEC will make a reference to manydifferent standards.

Approvals for North America

Product certifications in North America will often be conducted by the National Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL). TheNRTLs are determined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). You can find a list of the current NRTLs onwww.osha.gov.

LÜTZE mainly uses Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to certify the products. UL (USA) and CSA (Canada) have an agreement thatallows the usage of one certification for both USA and Canada.

In general there are two main certification classes:

Certification Logos Meaning

UL Recognized „UL Recognized“ signifies that the product is rated as a component. A component is a part of an application. Cables with an „Appliance Wiring Material“ (AWM per Standard 758) are always „recognized“. Typically these cables are already installed on the machine when it ships.

UL Listed „UL Listed“ signifies a cable as actually tested and proven for a specific use. This way the cable has to match the UL Standards and the requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC). Typically, cables with a UL Listing are used for field wiring in North America.

Common „UL Listings“ for industrial cables:

It is possible to combine different UL Listings in one cable. LÜTZE offers a variety of cables with UL Listings for various industrialapplications.

Use of certifications:Code / Standard Use Permissible cables

NEC Field level UL Listed only

NFPA 79 Machine level UL Listed and/or UL Recognized if in compliance with NFPA 79 12.9

UL 508A Cabinet level UL Listed and/or UL Regognized if in compliance with UL 508a 29.2

In order to use recognized AWM type cable in compliance with NFPA 79 paragraph 12.9 or UL 508A paragraph 29.2 the machinebuilder must assure and document, that the selected cable is suitable for the application. The suitability can be checked easily bymatching the UL AWM style to the application. The UL AWM styles provide, among other things, information about the materialsand wall thickness of a cable.

Example: AWM 2587 describes a 600V 90°C cable with PVC jacket for external wiring. The actual use, for example, may not exceed the rated voltage of this cable. Typical rated voltages for AWM cables are 30, 300,600 and 1000V.
