SMS VOLUMES ADDED TO SG UNTIL NO MORE VOLUMES
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Sporadically, scripts adding SMS volumes to Storage Groups keeps
adding the volumes until the Storage Group runs out of spare
volumes or labels.
The reason is that the VANSMSAC module sometimes gives a return code
different from zero even if the ICKDSF initialization and VVDS
definition went OK.
SYMPTOMS:
Script ends with the following messages in MSGE:
VANSMSAC No SMS Volumes ready for SYSS on XMVS
VANSMSAD No SMS Volumes ready for SYSS on XMVS
EWSLSMSA No SMS Volumes ready for SYSS on XMVS
EWSLCMD LINE PGM=EWSLSMSA RC=8
IMPACT:
Too many Volumes are added to the SG.
CIRCUMVENTION:

Publication: Configuration Guide
In the Config Guide, change the section Configure Virtual Tape Systems
first sentence to read as follows:
CA Vantage supports the following Virtual Tape Systems (VTS): •
CA Vtape •
IBM's VTS •
STK's Virtual Storage Manager (VSM). •
EMC's DLm
Add the following new sections in the Configuration Guide at the end
of the “Configure Virtual Tape Systems” section, in chapter
Configuring
<vant> Tape Resource Option.
CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager 12.6 6
CA RS 1404 - PTF RO65534 Details
Release Service DetailsConfigure for EMC DLm
The following sections describe how to configure for the EMC Disk
Library for mainframe (DLm) , virtual tape facility.
SYSPROG - Run INSTALL Job J06DLM To configure for EMC DLm, run install
job J06DLM. This job allocates and initializes your configuration data
sets for EMC DLm. If not already done, find this job in the CCTUSAMP
library, customize it to your needs as instructed in the comments at
the beginning of the member, and run it now.
Run Factory Summary INSTALL Job J01SUMM. This job copies the Factory
Summary objects from CCTUSAMP to SUMMDEFS.
Configure for EMC DLm
The EMC DLm facility uses the EMC Command Processors facility to
obtain information and return the result to input files for CA Vantage
Disk Interval (DI) objects.
Note:
All versions of DLm does not support all Command Processors.
Check which Command Processors that are installed on your
system.
This interface is using:
CP501, CP502, CP503, CP504, CP601, CP602, and CP998 (or CP999)
You must comment out the sections for the Command Processors
not supported.
(There will be no data in the associated objects.)
For the DLMDIJCL JCL that gets submitted, make sure that the
VANTDEV user ID is granted the authority to issue the EMC DLm
Command Processors DLMCMD RUNWAIT commands and has access to the
libraries in the JCL.
You must set the CA Vantage system parameter DLMDIPFX. It determines
the Prefix of the output files from the EMC Command Processor jobs.
Configure the DLMDIPFX system parameter to comply with your local
requirements. Note: For more information about the system parameter,
see the description in the section VKGPARMS Parameter Descriptions.
The EMC DLm objects are implemented as Disk Interval (DI) objects.
Use system script DLMDISCR and the DLMDIJCL JCL which is distributed
in the CCTUSAMP library, to collect object information and write it
to its disk interval data set on a the schedule specified. The disk
interval data sets are then used as input to the EMC DLm objects
whenever it is requested. The script should already reside in your
system scripts library (as identified by system parameter SYSTSCR). If
not, simply copy it manually from the CCTUSAMP library. Copy the
DLMDIJCL member from the CCTUSAMP library to your JCL library if it is
not already residing there
To schedule when this script should run
1. To schedule when these scripts should run, do one of the following:
* Edit the DLMDISCR member of your system scripts data set.
Uncomment the PERFORM_EVT_PROC statement (move it one space
to the left so that the line begins in position 1) and
specify an execution date and time. For example:
PERFORM_EVT_PROC=ON_DAY=MON,AT_TIME=0100 Valid values for
the ON_DAY= parameter are: ALL, MON, TUE, WED, THU, FRI,
SAT, or SUN. Also update the SET_NUMB_RECORDS= to indicate
roughly the number of volumes in your tape library. For
example:
SET_NUMB_RECORDS=100000
* Use the System Script Builder wizard in the Windows Client to set
these values. In the Windows Client menu bar, select z/OS, Object
Scripting, and then System Scripts. In the Script Selection page of
the wizard, select the scripts (the scripts you select depend on
your tape devices as noted above).
2. To change configuration, use the Configure Script action in the EMC
DLm objects. Open the object in the Windows Client, click Actions,
and the appropriate Configure Script action from the Actions menu
list.
To activate and execute the script
CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager 12.6 7

2. Wait until the script completes execution before requesting the EMC
DLm objects. The following console message appears when the script
ends:

CREATE ESMTP REAL TIME EMAIL CLIENT ON THE HOST
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
When z/OS SMTP Server runs in SECURE mode (secure gateway) we are
not able to send any email. The reason is that the z/OS SMTP Server
running in SECURE mode expects data in NETDATA format, not plain text.
SYMPTOMS:
For secure SMTP, the IEBGENER utility is incorrectly sending the
mail in PUNCH format, when it should be sending it in NETDATA
format. Using spool interface of z/OS SMTP Server is quite
limiting in some cases. We cannot use this method when z/OS SMTP
Server is running with SECURE parameter at all.
IMPACT:
Vantage emails are not delivered.
CIRCUMVENTION:
Do not use z/OS SMTP Server with SECURE parameter.

PUBLICATION: Configuration Guide
***Chapter Configure General Object Automation (GOA)/SYSPROG -
Configure SMTP Server for GOA Email
***Change/Update the text from the following:
Add the following section in front of the section:
'SYSPROG - Configure SMTP Server for GOA Email'
'SYSPROG - Configure Vantage SMTP client for GOA Email'
CA Vantage has ability to communicate directly (in real time) with
any mail server (z/OS SMTP server, z/OS sendmail server, MS
Exchange server etc.) over SMTP protocol. You can use this feature
simply by setting SMTPHOST system parameter with proper mail server
address. If the mail server listens on a different port than the
default port 25, you can specify it in SMTPPORT system parameter.
If you specify any SMTPHOST, this direct way is used for sending
emails in CA Vantage, not the spool interface.
Note that SMTP connectivity must be available between the mail
server and the z/OS LPAR where the Vantage started task is running
on.
Change the section name from
'SYSPROG - Configure SMTP Server for GOA Email'
to
'SYSPROG - Configure SMTP Server for GOA Email Using Spool Interface'.
Add this Note to the section:
Note:
This approach (spool interface) is used when SMTPHOST parameter is
not defined or full of blanks. Otherwise SMTP real time
communication (SMTP client) is used.

CONVERT DTOC4VOL AND DTOC4POL TO FILTERED DTOC4SYS
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
1. Getmain failures occur, especially during DTOC scans.
2. DTOC field EAS-Trks is always 0 (it is not filled with the proper
value).
3. Wasted (idle) space in VVDS data sets is not shown. They are
commonly over-allocated, and this can not easily be detected.
4. The zoom to Data Sets by Volume is often in LI mode. It should
default to RT (real time) because this is fast, and current status
is always more valuable.
5. The zoom to Data Sets by Storage Group in RT (real time) mode
needs to be faster and DTOCVEXC exclusions need to be applied.
6. Memory above the bar for the DTOC is over-allocated by as much as
50 percent or even more. This needs to be managed better, such that
the Memlimit can be set more accurately.
7. The memory limit above the bar for individual tasks is not managed
correctly for generalized server tasks. False indications are
sometimes given that too much memory has been consumed by the task,
followed by a rejection of the getmain request, and subsequent
failure of the executing function.
8. The following zooms have never worked:
-From DMSARCHV (CA Disk Archive Volumes) to Data Sets by Volume
-From SMSSPARE (Spare Vols for SMS SGs) to Data Sets by Storage Grp
-From SMSVOLS (DFSMS Complex) to Data Sets by Storage Grp
9. Environments with more than 26,211,778 data sets do not have all of
them available within the DTOC.
SYMPTOMS:
1. VAN0590E: GETMAIN FAILED, LEN= xxx,xxx,xxx SP=000 ID=VTOCREAL GETMAIN
AREA G CALLER=GENVTOCR
VAN0590D ----------------------- y,yyy,yyy=MAX LENGTH AVAILABLE
and other variations of the above two messages.
2. DTOC field EAS-Trks is always 0 for data sets known to reside in the
EAS area of EAV volumes.
3. DTOC fields % Idl, I-Trks and Idle Bytes are incorrectly shown as 0
for all SYS1.VVDS.Vvolser data sets.
4. By default, the Data Sets by Volume object is often displayed in
LI mode. An additional request must be made to get RT mode.
5. A zoom request in RT to Data Sets by Storage Group, for a large
storage group, takes too long. For example, a request for the
SYSALLDA storage group might take 4 times longer than a new
DTOC scan. Volumes put into the DTOCVEXC list incorrectly show up
in the RT Data Sets by Storage Group.
6. The MEMLIMIT= parameter in the JCL is specified higher than
needed, which in theory "requires" more page space to cover
worse case scenarios.
VAN1558E Object=objname was not created because the auxiliary page
space limit of ppp was hit
7. VAN1555E Object=objname was not created because the task getmain
limit of xxxx above the bar was hit
8. The following zooms always fail:
-From DMSARCHV (CA Disk Archive Volumes) to Data Sets by Volume
-From SMSSPARE (Spare Vols for SMS SGs) to Data Sets by Storage Grp
-From SMSVOLS (DFSMS Complex) to Data Sets by Storage Grp
Message following message is always given/received:
VKG0170D No Records Exist OR No Match On Filter Criteria
9. Message VAN0490I is issued, saying:
VAN0490I DTOC Size Limit Hit by Vol=volser. All Remaining Vols/DSNS
ignored.
IMPACT:
1. Many desired Vantage functions, and needed analysis, can not be done.
2. Usage of the extended addressing areas on DASD EAV volumes can not
easily be seen (confirmed as being used). This can lead to job
failures due to "disk space not available", simply because the EAS
CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager 12.6 30
CA RS 1404 - PTF RO67565 Details
Release Service Detailsareas are not being used as intended and assumed.
3. Disk space that could be used by important applications, is being
wasted in over-allocated VVDSs.
4. Analysis of problems on a volume may be based upon non-current
last interval (LI) data instead of current real time (RT) data.
5. Analysis of problems within a storage group may be bypassed
simply because it takes too much time to get real time (RT) data.
6. System performance can be degraded or put in jeopardy because
the MEMLILMIT value is left too high.
7. Needed objects may not be available due to errors measuring
memory usage by the task and comparing it to the task limit.
8. Desired analysis can not be done.
9. Analysis based upon the DTOC may be incomplete because not all
data sets are included.
CIRCUMVENTION:
1. None
2. IDCAMS ListCat, or VTOC listings can be examined to see if data
sets actually reside in EAS.
3. None
4. Continue to change the mode to RT when needed.

Topic: Exclude Data Sets from the Data Set Objects (Optional)
Delete everything in the 3rd bullet item - all the way down to
"Observe the following:" which is the lead-in to 2 more bullet points.
Topic: System Parameters
*** Replace the following:
DTOCSIZE
Specifies this parameter only if memory and auxiliary storage are very
limited, and you want to ensure that the DTOC itself never exceeds a
certain size. Specify a number (nnnn) in Megabytes (for example, 500
means 500MB).
A setting of (9999) ensures that every data set seen during the DTOC
scan and build process will be included in the DTOC.
The value of this parameter is divided by the row length of the DTOC
objects to determine the maximum number of DTOC rows to build. If this
limit is reached, message VAN0490I is issued, and the build process
stops.
Important! If you use this parameter and your limit is reached, you
will not be seeing everything you might expect within the DTOC. If
this condition goes unnoticed, you and other users may make erroneous
decisions and take incorrect actions, because the data set picture is
incomplete.
Applies to: Base System and Data Set Groups
Default: (9999)

Specify this parameter only if memory and auxiliary storage are very
limited, and you want to ensure that the DTOC itself never exceeds a
certain size. Specify a number (nnnnn) in Megabytes (for example, 500
means 500MB).
The default value is (09999) which allows over 26 million data sets to
be placed in the DTOC. The maximum value permitted is (25000) which
allows the DTOC to contain roughly 65 million data sets.

DTOCRDRS
Specifies the number of VTOC and VVDS readers that are to be used in
parallel when building the Last Interval DTOC. This level of
multithreading will be used. In general, this reduces the amount of
elapsed time to build the DTOCs. However, the benefit will vary and
depend upon the hardware resources at your installation as well as the
level of contention with other I/O at any point in time.
Applies to: Base System and Data Set Groups
Range: 1 to 16

CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager 12.6 32
CA RS 1404 - PTF RO67565 Details
Release Service DetailsNotice: A low value such as 1 or 2 may have been set because of memory
problems for the VTOC readers. This was a considerable problem in the
old DTOC support (prior to the PTF that converts DTOC4VOL and DTOC4POL
to filtered DTOC4SYS). But the current DTOC support has pretty much
eliminated the former memory problem related to multiple readers. Each
VTOC reader (within the DTOC reader) now uses a fixed buffer size, much
smaller than previously. Using nn DTOC readers does use nn(fixed buffer
size) in memory, but this is so much less than in the old code, that it
will very seldom, if ever, be a problem. So it is recommended to try
setting sysparm DTOCRDRS to a value of (4) or even higher. This does
not affect CPU usage at all, but it does drive more I/O concurrently,
and should reduce the elapsed time of the DTOC scan -- making the DTOC
more available.

Range: 1 to 16

*** Replace the following:
LSPACEAT
Volume and/or Pool interval scans invoke the IBM LSPACE service. LSPACE
can go into an indefinite lockout caused by either a long enqueue on
the volume or a hardware reserve on the device from another system. For
several years CA Vantage SRM has protected against these lockouts. IBM
APAR OW48527 now provides a more CPU efficient protection against
lockouts. CA Vantage SRM now defaults to using the IBM LSPACE lockout
protection. If the IBM APAR is not applied, or if new problems arise,
the LSPACEAT system parameter should be set to (Y) to reactivate the CA
Vantage SRM lockout protection.
Applies to: Base System, Volumes, Defrag, and Storage Groups
Default: (N)

Topic: Performance - Paging Activity
The last paragraph currently says this:
Higher paging activity depends on what adhoc activity is being
performed by logged on users, as well as the specific functions
performed by the automation scripts. For example, a request to filter
and sort the data sets on a volume requires paging in only the DTOC
pages for the specific volume. None, some, or all of the pages may
have been paged out, depending on the available real memory and the
contention with other tasks for that resource. The same request to
filter and sort all data sets on the system typically requires
CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager 12.6 33
CA RS 1404 - PTF RO67565 Details
Release Service Detailssignificantly more paging, since the number of data sets is much
larger. But again, how much more still depends on the same factors:
the amount of real memory available, and the contention for that
resource at that point in time.
It should be replaced with this:

performed by the automation scripts. None, some, or all of the DTOC

paging. But how much still depends on the same system factors: the

Topic: Glossary
It currently defines the DTOC like this:
DTOC
DTOC stands for Data set Table of Contents. It consists of one or more
DSAB entries, one entry for each data set on each disk volume. The
DTOC also has several indexes that consist of a list of 4-byte memory
addresses, each pointing to one of the DTOC DSAB entries. The DTOC4SYS
index is the list of pointers to all data set DSAB entries known to
the system. A DTOC4VOL is the list of pointers to the DSAB entries for
data sets on a single volume. A DTOC4POL is the list of pointers to
all DSAB entries for data sets in a storage group.
It should be changed to this:

Chapter 2: Working with Data Sets
Topic: DTOC - Data Set Table of Contents
Current 2nd paragraph says this:
An indexed DTOC is created for each volume (DTOC4VOL), each storage
group (DTOC4POL), and each data set accessible on your z/OS system
(DTOC4SYS). As a result, DTOCs provide higher and broader views of
storage. Data set views based upon the DTOC objects provide almost
unlimited ability to view, analyze, and easily manage your
installation data sets. For example, you can easily find and process
all data sets belonging to a particular department, without regard to
their physical locations or device types. Or similarly, you can find
and analyze all the data sets assigned to a particular management
class.
It should be changed to this:
An index is created for the system DTOC, with a direct pointer to
every data set on your system. As a result, it provides a high, broad,
and powerful view of your storage. Data set views based upon the DTOC
object provide almost unlimited ability to view, analyze, and easily
manage your installation data sets. For example, you can easily find
and process all data sets belonging to a particular department,
without regard to their physical locations or device types. Or
similarly, you can find and analyze all the data sets assigned to a
particular management class.
Topic: Duplicate Data Sets
Change text from:
Duplicate data sets are defined as data sets with the same name on
different volumes, which are not portions of a multi-volume data set.
That is, duplicate data sets will all have Seq Nbr = 1. System script
DUPEDSNS finds all of these data sets and creates a special object for
them. Using this object, you can zoom to the IDCAMS Listcat object to

Release Service Detailsidentify which of the duplicates is properly cataloged. In most cases,
the uncataloged version should be scratched in order to avoid future
problems and confusion.

OBJCCATR +3972 0C4-11 RUNNING AUDITARC SCRIPT
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
1. 0C4 abends at OBJCCATR+3972 when the AUDITARC script is run.
2. C03 abends when Vantage is shutdown after the above error.
3. AUDITARC report/object can incorrectly report that archive tapes
created while the audit is running are not cataloged.
SYMPTOMS:
1. 0C4 abend at OBJCCATR+3972
2. C03 abend at Vantage shutdown
3. Some tapes listed as not being cataloged are actually cataloged
just fine.
IMPACT:
1. The abend prevents the Audit of ARCHVOLS versus the z/OS Catalogs
from being produced. Hence, archive tape catalog status can not
be checked and discrepancies cleaned up.
2. The abend identifies a catalog that was left open. The abend has
no direct impact, but indicates that a catalog was left open, which
might have prevented other catalog activity.
3. An incorrect entry in the audit report may lead to wrong decisions
and actions.
