Day 2 After a hearty breakfast riders will set out on the first leg of their Challenge. The morning ride is gentle but becomes undulating as we pass over the hills through the Lake District. Lunch will be served along the picturesque route from our support wagon as we refuel for our day 2 destination and well-earned shower in the Penrith area. Day 3 Prepare for a tough day in the saddle as this section of the route takes in the iconic climbs of Heartside where we can enjoy a well-deserved coffee at the summit café and the remote Stanhope summit of Park Head as we head into Consert. It’s not all that bad though! Because, what goes up must come down! And the thrill of the decent will make up for all those aching muscles. Day 4 The final day is the shortest section of the route and all about a smooth decent into Tynemouth. After finally ‘dipping’ your wheels in the North Sea we will then head back the short distance to Newcastle for a formal reception and presentation to celebrate our achievements and the great work of the Morning Star. Please note the route and riding times are still to be confirmed and subject to hotel bookings. We will aim to start each morning at around 9.00am and to ride for around 4.00 / 5.00 hours per day (excluding food stops and breaks). The first days riding is anticipated to be around 55 / 60 miles. Day two will be of similar distance, with the final day of riding at around 35 / 40 miles. All riders will be notified in due course of the final arrangements. Due to the nature of the Challenge arrangements have to be planned well in advance. We will endeavour to follow our final published itinerary but there may be exceptional circumstances when it is not possible to do so. Changes may have to be made at any time and we reserve the right to do so in the interest of minimising costs and ensuring your safety during the Challenge. Fitness Confirmation The Challenge and route can be strenuous and weather conditions unpredictable; you should be reasonably fit and enjoy sufficient good health to participate. If you do not already ride or exercise regularly you should now start, in preparation for the Challenge, gradually increasing the level of exertion so that you feel comfortable in completing around 60 miles per day at a gentle pace of between 12 15mph. A recommended training schedule will be sent in your Fundraising Pack.

Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group

This Challenge is organised by volunteers from the Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group. The registration fee of £150 (non-refundable) will be used to secure basic accommodation for three nights’ bed and breakfast, vehicle support and packed lunches, energy bars and drinks for the three riding days. In addition you will be asked to raise a minimum of £300 for the Morning Star. Please note travel arrangements to and from the start and finish points are not included in the costs. However the organisers will attempt to arrange central pick up points and shared travel to keep additional costs to a minimum.

Your Bike It is essential that your bike is in good repair, serviced regularly and you can carry out minor repairs such as a puncture. All types of bike are welcome but we recommend a mountain bike or hybrid as being the most suitable for the terain covered by the route.

Your Equipment This is a sporting Challenge and you should come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear. You will be traveling on public highways so it is recommended you wear a cycle helmet and high visability clothing. Your luggage will be transported on to the next destination each day but you might want to carry with you such things as your own waterproof jacket, spare tee shirt, drinks bottle and an energy bar.

Morning Star Coast 2 Coast Challenge CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1. For this Challenge we require a registration fee of £150 (non-refundable) which must be enclosed with this application form. In addition you must pledge to raise a minimum of £300 in sponsorship for the Morning Star. After payment of all ‘on-costs’ for your trip, 100% of all funds raised will be made payable to the Morning Star. At least 50% (£150) of your sponsorship must be received by Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group four weeks prior to departure. Your total sponsorship must be received by the Morning Star Supporters Group within six weeks of return from the Challenge. All funds raised through this Challenge must be payable to PPFF.

1. If you are unable to meet this sponsorship requirement, you have two options: to forfeit your place in the c Challenge or to make up the balance yourself.

2. You must pay on demand to Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group any reasonable increased charges (up to a total of £50) that may incur in providing this trip, as a result of any, for example, additional fuel costs or changes in accommodation rates, which results in an increase in the cost to the Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group that would seriously undermine the main purpose of raising funds for the Morning Star.

3. Should you, for whatever reason, not take your place, all sponsorship forms and monies collected should be forwarded to the Merseyside Morning Star Supporters Group for return to your sponsors.

4. While we endeavour to follow our planned itinerary there may be circumstances when this is not possible. We reserve the right to modify the itinerary as necessary.

5. You must be at least 16 years old before the departure date of the event

6. For the safety for all members of the group you must comply with the tour leaders instructions at all times.

7. Any independent travel arrangements that you make are at your own cost.

8. The Challenge can be demanding and the terrain may be hazardous in places. While the route mostly follows very quiet roads and single track cycling lanes you are strongly advised to take out accident and personal injury insurance if you don’t already have it.

9. This Challenge is in support of the Morning Star and the unique role it plays within the British trade union and labour movement. Entry for this Challenge is at our discretion and we reserve the right to refuse entry to any participant at any time if we consider that such participation is inappropriate.

I apply to take part in the Morning Star 1st Edition Coast 2 Coast Challenge specified above, in accordance with the above conditions of entry, which I have read and understood.

I enclose my non-refundable registration fee of £150 made payable to PPPF.

I make a commitment to raise a minimum of £300 in sponsored donations. The objective is to raise as much sponsorship as possible.
