Gncinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden officials are mourning the lossofWillow^ thecheetahwho gavebirth to five cubs on March 8.

Zoo vets had hoped that the five-year-old cheetah would recover aftera rare C-section at Mast Farm, thezoo's regional cheetah bree^g facility in Clermont County. However,she remained lethargic and lost herappetite over the weekend, according to zoo officials.

"Cheetahs are a fragile species,and this difficult birth proved to betoo much for her to pull through,"Thane Maynard, director of the Cincinnati Zoo &Botanical Garden, saidin a news release. "Willow was ableto contribute to the survival of herspecies by producing five cheetahcubs. Without the C-section, we likely would have lost both the mom andthe cubs."

Mark Campbell, the zoo's directorof animal health; said last week thatthe cubs' birth was only the thirdC-section he has been involved in,and the only one on a cheetah, duringhis 25 years at the Cincinnati Zoo.

It's not all bad news from the zoo:The premature cubs' condition hasimproved during the last few days,zoo officials said. The cubs - threeboys and two girls -have been getting around-the-clock critical care in

"They really turned a comer thisweekend," head nursery keeperDawn St^ser said in the news release. "They opened their eyes, hadgood appetites and, most importantly, they pooped! It's important tokeep their digestive system moving.We've been massaging theirbelliesand giving them opportunities toexercise as much as possible."

Blakely, an Australian shepherdwho serves as a nursery companionat the zoo, has been tasked with serving as a surrogate parent of sorts forthe cubs.

"His first job is to let the cubsclimb on him, which they did as soonas they were put together," Strasser

said. "They need the exercise tobuild muscle tone and get their gutsmoving."

Later, the dog's role will switch tothat of a teacher, helping the catsleam the difference between fighting and playing, for example.

The cubs wO stay in the nurseryfor at least eight weeks. Zoo officimshave said that important benchmarks for their survival are the firstweek, which they've already surpassed, and the first month. Zoovisitors may get a peek at them fromnursery windows, but some care willtake place out of public view.

Once they leave the nursery, thecubs will be hand-raised and will betrained as cheetah ambassadors,which visit schools to let studentsleam about the animals up close.

Cheetahs are endangered, withtheir population estimated at 9,000 to12,000 worldwide. (Thafs comparedwith approximately 100,000 in 1900.)As a result, their breeding in captivity is planned and monitored carefully. Because their breeding is mostsuccessful when they are able tochoose from multiple mates, theCheetah Species Survival Plan (SSP)hasset upRe^onalCheetah Breeding Facilities in zoos. The CincinnatiZoo is one of nine institutions accredited for a breeding coalition.

Fifty-four cheetah cubs have beenbora at Mast Farm since it opened in2002.

An atheist gtcup is planning abillboard campaign in Kentucky toprotest the $92 million Noah's Arkreplica theme park, set to open inJuly.

The TH-State Freethinkers groupsaid it raised more than $3,000toerect several billboards tided "^no-cide Se Incest Park: Celebrating 2,000years of myths." In arendering, thebillboard shows people drowningaround an ark.

The campaign is meant to arguethat "ifs a genocide park that celebrates the destruction of humankind,minus whoever was on the ark," saidFreethinkers spokesman Tbny Arnold, including "repopulationthrough nefarious means."

The Ark Encounter, a 510-footwooden ship as described in the OldTestament, is under constmction inGrant County near Interstate 75. Itwill Include a petting zoo, theater,cafes, gift shop and 4,000-spaceparking lot. The ark park is 45 milessouth of the Creation Museum,which presents a literal interpretation of Genesis and argues the Earthis only 6,000 years old and that dinosaurs and humans co-existed.

of Willow,the cheetah who gavehlrth to five cubs on March 8.

Zoo vets had hoped that the Hve-yearold cheetah would recover aftera rare C-section at Mast Pann, thezoo's regional cheetah breeding facility in Clermont County. However,she remained lethargic and lost her^petite over the weekend, according to zoo officials.

"Cheetahs are a fragile species,and this difficult birth proved to betoo much for hertopuU throu^"Thane Mapard, director of tiw Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, saidin a news release. "Willow was ableto contribute to the survival of herspecies by producing five cheetahcubs. Without the C-section, we likely would have lost both the mom andthe cubs."

Mark Campbell, the zoo's directorof animal health, said last week thatthecubs'birthwasonlythet^dC-section he has been involved in.and the only one on a cheetah, duringhis 2S years at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Blakely, an Australian shepherdwho serves as a nursery companionat the zoo, has been tasked with serving as a surrogate parent of sorts forthe cubs.

"His first job is to let the cubsclimb on him, which they did as soonas they were put together," Stmsser

said. "They need the exercise tobuild muscle tone and get their gutsmoving."

Later, the dog's role will switch tothat of a teacher, helping the catslearn the difference between fighting and playing, for example.

The cubs will stay in the nurseryfor at least eight weeks. Zoo officialshave said that important benchmarks for their survival are the firstweek, which they've already surpassed, and the first month. Zoovisitors may get a peek at them fromnursery win&ws,but somecare willtake place out of public view.

Once they leave the nursery, thecubs will be hand-raised and will betrained as cheetah ambassadors,which visit schools to let studentsleara about the animals up close.

Cheet^ are endangered, withtheir population estimated at 9,000 to12,000worldwide. (That's comparedwith approximately 100,000 in 1900.)As a result, their breeding in captivity is planned and monitored carefully. Because their breeding is mostsuccessful when they are able tochoose from multiple mates, theGieetah Species Survival PUm (SSP)has set up Regional Cheetah Breeding Fittilities in zoos. The CincinnatiZoo is one of nine institutioDS accreditedfor a breeding coition.

Fifty-four cheetah cubs have beenbom at Mast Farm since it opened in2002.

An atheist group is planning abillboard campaign in Kentucky toprotest the $92 million Noah's Arkreplica theme park, set to open inJuly.

The m-State Freethinkers groupsaid it raised more than $3,000 toerect several billboards titled "Genocide & Incest Park: Celebrating 2,000years ofmyths." Ina rendering, thebillboard shows people drowningaround an ark.

The campaign is meant to arguethat "it's a genocide park that celebrates the destructioD of humankind,minus whoever was on the ark," saidFreethinkers spokesman Tbny Arnold, including "repopulationthrough nefarious means."

The Ark Encounter, a 510-footwooden ship as described in the OldTbstament, is under construction inGrant County near Interstate 75.
