Creativity – It is the way of our

people!

Objective

As life-long learners and artists I will improve my teaching practice through collegial

discussion, planning and reflection to achieve enhanced creativity for my 2012-13 art

courses.

Big Questions

What is creativity? What is not creativity?

In search of one definition a man name Mel Rhodes (1961) determined that creativity was better defined through a system of four Ps; the creative Person, Process, Press (environment), and the creative Product.

Later, an early pioneer in the field and a mathematician, Ruth Noller, developed this elegant equation: Creativity equals the function of an attitude multiplied by knowledge, imagination, and evaluation.  C= fa(KIE)

The most widely used working definition within the field is "novel and useful" or in other words, the production of original ideas that serve a purpose.

From the International Center of Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State University in New York

Creativity – characterized by originality and expressiveness; imaginative.

Originality – the ability to create or innovate.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

The “Myths” of Creativity

“Every education system on Earth has the same hierarchy of subjects: at the top are mathematics and languages, then the humanities, and the bottom are the arts.”

Ken Robinson

“If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.”

Ken Robinson

Creativity

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges the way we're educating our children. He champions a radical rethink of our school systems, to cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

What are barriers to

creativity in our schools?

How can we as teachers break

down those barriers?

How do we make risk-

taking in art-making safe for

students?

How can we encourage personal

originality in student art?

“Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.”

Ken Robinson

Artistic Integrity Statement

How do we encourage originality that leads to

creativity?

Ideas for creating image resources:

Use of digital cameras – BYO, cell phone cameras, online editors etc…

Use of internet for single object reference.

Have students KEEP reference material as part or their assessment.
