Highlights from OMED 2018 Journal Article Spotlight: Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine Journal Article Spotlight: British Journal of Sports Medicine From the President: John Dougherty, DO, FACOFP, FAOASM, FAODME It’s amazing how quickly time flies. Fall sports are heading into conference championships and the World Series is here. (Why yes, I am wearing my Kansas City Royals 2015 World Series Championship Ring today--thank you for asking!) AOASM just completed an amazingly successful OMED conference in San Diego under the leadership of Dr. Rodriguez-Regner and her apprentice/hijo, Mathías. She pulled together an amazing pool of talent to address overflowing rooms of attendees for many of the sessions. Thank you again to all who contributed. As I look out my office window in Provo I see snow covering the peeks of the Wasatch Mountains, reminding us that winter sports are revving up practices, and our members will start getting out their winter gear and/or their courtside suits. Applications for the Bureau of Osteopathic Clinical Education & Research (BOCER) FY2019 grant cycle will be available in November 2018, with applications due in January 2019. The five categories grants are awarded in are: --Pain Management --OMM/OMT --Chronic Diseases & Conditions --Musculoskeletal Injuries & Prevention --Osteopathic Philosophy Recipients will be notified of awards in June 2019. Criteria for those grants can be found here. Members, and in particular Fellowship Programs, are encouraged to apply. Even if you aren’t a grant recipient, the application process is a valuable learning experience. AOASM Board of Trustees Secretary/Treasurer and Campus Dean for GA - PCOM proposed campus in Moultrie, Georgia, Michael Sampson, DO, FAOASM, is representing the Academy to the US Olympic Committee’s “Summit on Sexual Abuse in Sport” at the end of November. The goal of the Summit is to initiate a consensus statement that providers will be able to implement as contributors to the Sports Medicine Team. I also want to acknowledge the tremendous work being done at The Rees Group, and in particular Ashley Alba’s support of AOASM and the establishment of the “ Quick Hit ” content that is posted bi-monthly to the AOASM.org website. The most recent edition focuses on wrestling and combat sports. It is a good refresher for the practicing clinician and a solid source for Fellowships to use for journal club content. Also, a warm welcome to the “Sidelines” new editor, Kaylee Walters. On a sad note we lost one of the giants of the AOASM family recently. Keith Duane Peterson, DO, FACSM, FAOASM, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018. Dr. Peterson was a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and co-founded The Sports Medicine Clinic in Ballard, Washington, where he was a team physician for Seattle Pacific University and over 20 high schools throughout the northwest region. Dr. Peterson helped establish the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Camp in Seeley Lake, Montana, and was a founding member of the International Council of Motorsport Sciences, the Rodeo Sports Medicine, and the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine. In addition, he served as the medical director of the Unlimited Hydroplane Commission, was the assistant team physician for the Seattle Mariners, and the attending physician for the professional rodeo circuit in four states. He was an associate physician for all of Seattle’s professional sports teams, including the Supersonics, the Seahawks, and the Sounders. Dr. Peterson was a pioneer in sports medicine and a constant fixture on the sideline, gym, rodeo arena, and in the hydro pits. The loss of his mentorship and wisdom has left the light of the Academy a little less bright. In Memoriam: Keith Peterson, DO Written by Angela Cavanna, DO, FAOASM September 30th, 2018, was the last day of the major league baseball season and, unfortunately, the day that the AOASM lost one of its founding fathers, Keith Peterson, DO. As a fourth-year medical student doing my elective sports medicine rotations and then throughout my fellowship and numerous spring training trips, I came to know “Doc Pete” as a mentor and sports medicine icon whose vision helped develop and apply the sports medicine model to various events and organizations. As the founder of the Sports Medicine Clinic in Seattle, Keith was instrumental in developing the role of the sports medicine doctor both on the sidelines and in the office. Whether he was with his team covering hydroplane races, rodeo events in Montana, or in the clubhouse for the Seattle Mariners, Keith was always involved with the “hands on” treatment of his patients and their families. Dr. Peterson emphasized the importance of nutrition in sports performance and recognized the impact of mental health issues in athletes, providing a true “team” approach to the care of all athletes. In the words of Mitch Storey, DO, FAOASM, “Keith Peterson was a true pioneer and innovator. All of us with sports medicine degrees can thank him for his insight.” At OMED 2018 in San Diego several of us reflected on Keith’s impact in our lives and on our careers: “Keith was a driving force in the development of sports medicine programming and training. He felt it very important to be trained more fully in the practice in sports medicine. His passion drove him to develop postgraduate training programs specifically designed to more fully care for the athlete both on and off the field. He also loved long horn cattle and taught me all about them!" – Wayne English, DO, FAOASM “Dr. Keith Peterson’s accomplishments will live through the literally hundreds of health care professionals and thousands of patients he mentored and cared for. Keith and Marilyn (spouse) were like family; caring, loving, helpful, and not afraid to let you know how to improve as a person and osteopathic physician.” – Craig Phelps, DO, FAOASM “Keith was a wonderful man. He was a visionary who loved life and sport. He recognized the special needs of elite athletes and for all of us who are active. He shared his dreams of teaching physicians to meet these challenges. I was very fortunate to be selected by Keith as his first sports medicine fellow. His passion for his patients and for sports inspired me to try to follow in his footsteps. I miss you Keith!” - Bob Adams, DO, FAOASM Our heart felt condolences to the Peterson family from your AOASM family. Keith, we will miss your wisdom and wit but will carry you with us throughout our lives.
