IMPORTANT DATES: DECEMBER 2013
Students decorated the “Tree of
Hope” with hopes for the future for
themselves and our world during
South’s Health and Wellness fair last
month. The tree trunk, created by
parent Mrs. Tagaris, provided the
background for the leaves and
flowers of positive wishes for the
future.
TEACHING TEENS ABOUT
SOCIAL MEDIA ETIQUETTE
According to a national survey, teens
are spending on average over seven
hours a day using entertainment
media which emphasizes the need
for students to learn social media
etiquette. It is clear that parents and
educational institutions have an
obligation to teach children about
the appropriate use of social media
and the legal and moral
repercussions that can occur with
the single click of a button.
According to the article, “Social
Media Etiquette Tips for Teenagers,”
the ‘Golden Rule’ that says, “Do unto
others as you would have them do
unto you,” holds true for posting on
social media as well.

educating teens visit:

Classroom Highlight
On Friday, March 23, Mr. Bernhard Storch, a Polish
World War II veteran spoke with all Global History II
classes on his experiences in the war and his role in the
liberation of the Sobibor and Majdanek concentration
camps. After spending a little over a year in a Russian
slave labor camp, Mr. Storch was released. In
November 1942, he enlisted and reported to volunteer
in the First Polish Division. Mr. Storch served from
1943-1945, fighting across Russia, central Poland, and
into Germany. He and his wife, also a Holocaust
survivor, arrived in the United States in April 1947. He
is the recipient of numerous medals for his bravery and
service during World War II. Mr. Storch is actively
involved with the Jewish War Veterans association and
several Holocaust museums. Upon completion of his
lecture, South students were led through a
question/answer session.

PEER LEADERS LEARN HOW TO MAKE A ‘WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
This past week 30 students from both North and South High Schools, along with their advisors Dina
Kalmeta, Shari Ovadia, Abigail Gordon and Nancy Seery, attended a three-day training to become World
of Difference Peer Leaders. This training was led by Melissa Shaw and Suzie Cho from the Anti-
Defamation League. The peer leadership program is designed to combat ALL types of prejudice in our
schools and community. Students who are passionate about improving our school climate have to go
through a rigorous application and interview process to be selected as part of the program. Peer leaders
assume leadership roles to create a respectful and inclusive school environment. They develop skills to
discuss issues of diversity, bigotry, and discrimination with their peers. Their goal is to disseminate
knowledge and skills that increase awareness of issues related to prejudice and bullying by modeling
prosocial behaviors. Peer Leaders learn how to respond effectively when they hear racial slurs, name-
calling, and put-downs in the hallways, lunchrooms, and classrooms. Students present monthly in 9th-
grade social studies classrooms and facilitate interactive and engaging activities to address these issues.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Anything Goes performed last month.

SOUTH STUDENTS PRESENT AT LOCAL HISTORY CONFERENCE
Five South Juniors gave a presentation at the annual Local History Conference hosted by the Rockland
Historical Society at St. Thomas Aquinas College on March 15, 2018. The students, David Bruen, Erin
Mulgrew, Liza Granoe, Jeannette Chien and Tse'ela Sokolin-Maimon, researched and created a
presentation on the historic Mount Moor African-American Cemetery that lies immediately adjacent to
the Palisades Mall. The students researched the history of the cemetery and the fight to protect it during
construction of the mall. Through this experience, the students developed an appreciation for the site
and concern for its current deterioration and future preservation. The students' presentation was voted
the second place winner by all of the other participating student groups from schools around Rockland
County.
TEACHERS SUPPORT LOCAL FAMILIES
BATTLING CANCER
Math teacher Dr. George Engel introduced South’s
staff to a local charity called Sparrow’s Nest when he
shared with the staff that he is raising funds to
support his planned run in November. Sparrow’s Nest
of the Hudson Valley provides two meals, once a
week, to the families of caregivers and children
diagnosed with any type of cancer. The staff’s
generosity enabled 40+ meals to be provided to
families in need.
A.P. BIOLOGY STUDENTS PERFORM UNIVERSITY LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS
Mr. Garbarino’s A.P. Biology students participated in the Rockefeller University Science Outreach
program's day in the laboratory. They performed a Polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) to amplify a section
of DNA for analysis through gel electrophoresis. They also performed a gel electrophoresis simulation
for the hereditary transmission of the Huntington's syndrome gene to see how it is passed through
generations. These techniques are standard procedures used daily in nearly all bio-medical laboratories
and are rarely done by high school students. The techniques were demonstrated, explained, and
facilitated by post-doctoral and graduate students under the directive of Dr. Jeanne Garbarino, Director
of Science Outreach at Rockefeller University.
