  • Comprehension: Problem and Solution

The WalkathonListen as I read a short story. Think about the problem that is described. Then circle the answers to the questions below. What solution would you suggest?

Keisha and Malik were talking about the walkathon. The second-graders at their school were having an event to raise money for a hunger center. The money would be given to the center to buy food for people who didn’t have enough to eat. “The weather report says it may be stormy and windy that day,” said Malik. He looked worried. “Do you think people will walk in the rain?” “Maybe, maybe not,” said Keisha. “Let’s stop here to get some poster board to make signs for the walkathon.” The children walked into the covered mall where their families shopped. “If we change the date, we’ll probably lose walkers,” said Malik. “Keisha, what should we do?”

    1. What is the problem in this story?

    a. Malik worries much more than Keisha does.

    b. The weather may rain out the walkathon.

    c. There is no other date to have the walkathon.

    2. What solution is possible for this problem?

    a. Change the date for the event.

    b. Have the walkathon in the covered mall if it rains.

    c. Make signs that say the walkathon is cancelled.

  • Comprehension: Point of View

Who Is It?Read each paragraph. Then look at the pictures. Decide which person is speaking in each paragraph and write his or her name on the line.

It was a mess. First one car hit another one. Then two bicycle riders got tangled up. Luckily, no one was hurt. But there sure was a lot of yelling. And many of them were yelling at me! I hate getting calls like this.

Why don’t people signal when they’re turning?I wouldn’t have hit his car if I’d known he was slowing down to turn.I think people should have to take a driving test every year. That’s what I think.

Mom told me to keep my eye on the street at all times. I should have listened to her. If I hadn’t been watching the people yelling about their dented cars, I wouldn’t have run into Julie’s new bike. Wow, is she ever mad at me!

I wish I’d had my camera. This would have made a good video for my movie class. And my friend Matt was one of the people involved. I’ll bet Julie won’t speak to him for a while!
