Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 22, 2017

Meet the Lamberts

My Brothers and Sisters, Being new to the parish, Fr. Chad has asked me to take a few moments to introduce my wife and myself to you. Always one to oblige my Pastor, please allow me to do just that! My wife Debbie and I are from the northern suburbs of the Chicago area. We met when we were juniors at Carmel High School in Mundelein, IL., (We have a great story on how we met, what I call a single-blind date, but you’re going to have to ask us directly for those details!!). We have been an item ever since that date and are in fact celebrating our thirty fourth wedding anniversary on Jan. 29th. We have two children, long since adults themselves, (where does the time go?!), who we are blessed to have still living near us in the Valley. Speaking of blessings, we are expecting our first grandchild in May! We moved to the Valley in 2000 when a position within my company opened up and I was allowed to lateral to this beautiful desert area. My wife and I have always been involved with the Church and one of our primary shared ministries over the years has been the music ministry. In our parish in Gurnee Illinois, our choir had played a lot of music that was written by some guys at a parish in Mesa called St. Timothy’s. And so it was that we ended up attending St. Timothy’s for the last sixteen plus years. Aside from the music ministry, Debbie and I are both Vincentians and are looking forward to working within the Conference here at Corpus Christi. Other ministries which we have been involved in include marriage and hospice care. For over forty years, Debbie has worked as a pre-school/kindergarten teacher and, at times, as a grade school teacher’s aid. She currently teaches at Triple R Daycare where she is affectionately known by so many Ahwatukee children and teens as Ms. Debbie. In terms of my employment history, I retired two years ago from a thirty year career in the pharmaceutical industry, (yes, I started when I was 13!). It was also a little over two years ago that I was ordained by Bishop Olmsted to serve the Diocese of Phoenix as a deacon. All my life, I felt called to something (which I believe we all are). It was the five years of deaconate formation which confirmed to Debbie and myself, that the desire to serve God by serving his Church in the role of deacon was where we were being led. Attracted by the idea of service in proclaiming God’s word, in doing charitable works, and in having the privilege to serve on the altar, I couldn’t be any happier than I am now in living the life of a deacon. With all sincerity, in the matter of a very short period of time, you have managed to make Debbie and me feel very much at home here at Corpus Christi. We want to thank you for that and want you all to know that we look very forward to worshiping and growing in our relationship with the Lord alongside each and every one of you.

His Peace,

Dcn. Dennis & Debbie Lambert 3

EVANGELIZATION: WHAT IS IT? By definition, to evangelize means “to proclaim” – as “to proclaim the Good News.” How do we “proclaim” or “evangelize?” By exam-ple: our neighbors, co-workers, complete strangers judge us by what they see us do. Are our actions con-sistent with setting a good example? Would they like to be more like us? And by word: Do we invite others, Catholics, and non-Catholics alike, to join us for Mass or a spiritu-ally themed program? Do we even discuss spirituali-ty with them?

Embracing evangelization does not necessarily mean knocking on neighborhood doors; it does mean “knocking on the hearts” of our relatives, acquaintances – and even strangers.

FIRST DEGREE HONORS: JANUARY 28TH Catholic men, 18 years or older are invited to begin their trek toward Knighthood on Saturday, January 28th. Candidates should arrive no later than 8:30 am. In the meantime, you may contact Grand Knight Dave Rak at 480-496-4411 [email protected] for more information.

SAN XAVIER DEL BAC ASSEMBLY MEETS THURSDAY, JANUARY 28TH

Sir Knights, mark your planner/calendar for our next regular meeting this Thursday. As the visible arm of the Knights, we are called to proclaim our commitment to God and country. Our principle of Patriotism compels us to be ever vigilant against the forces of evil that seek to destroy our faith in God and eliminate our way of life. Our practice of evangelization by action and word are keystones to building a better Catholic America.

Hand Carved in Bethlehem

Please stop by the tables of religious wares (rosaries, statues, crucifixes, etc.) in the Pavilion after all Masses the weekend of FEBRUARY 4TH & 5TH.

Ayman Khair will be here, representing about 180 Christian families from Bethlehem who have been dependent upon sales of their hand carved religious articles to tourists of the Holy Land. Due to conflict in the Middle East, tourism has been detrimentally affected. In order to survive, they have turned to Christian communities in the United States to purchase their articles. These hand carved religious articles are beyond description. Carved from wood of the sacred Olive tree, this workmanship has been a tradition for these families for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the efforts of the sales in the United States, that these families will have enough income to remain living in the Holy Land. Thank you in advance for your support.

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adult children, 18+, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month.

How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
