As we begin the month of May, our calendars are filled with celebrations
and events of family activities. Some
of our children will be celebrating their First Communion; many of our students will be celebrating gradua-tion from one level or another; it the
beginning of the season for wed-dings; the whole Church will be cele-
brating the month dedicated to Mary, the mother of God; and of course, we cannot forget giving thanks for our own Mothers on Mothers’ Day.
The month of May is a busy month filled with many areas for which to be
thankful. Hopefully, these events are not simply seen as a time to have a party or family get-together but a
time to truly embrace the gifts that
God has bestowed upon us. As we end the Easter Season, we are also
gifted with the Feast of the Ascension,
the Feast of Pentecost, the Feast of the Holy Trinity leading us into the great Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. All of these wonderful Feast
days are reminders of how God de-sires to share his very life with us, not
only in the future but in the here and now of our daily lives. In the Compendium of the Social Doc-trine of the Church, we read: “Thanks
to the Spirit, the Church is aware of the divine plan of unity that involves
the entire human race, a plan des-tined to reunite in the mystery of sal-vation wrought under the saving
Lordship of Christ all of created real-
ity, which is fragmented
and scattered.
From the day of Pentecost when the res-urrection is announced to diverse
peoples, each of whom understand it in their own language, the Church
fulfills her mission of restoring and bearing witness to the unity lost at Babel. Due to this ecclesial ministry, the human family is called to redis-
cover its unity and to recognize the richness of its differences, in order to
attain full unity in Christ.”(no. 431) May the Feast Days of May help us understand our role in bringing about
this unity. Fr. Mark

Padre Mark

“Beloved, let us love one another,” knowing that “love is of God.” God’s presence, the Holy Spirit, is
the source bringing all people together in the unity of Baptism. But love does not stay still: it asks us to obey Christ’s commands and to “lay
down one’s life for one’s friends.” It reminds us
that we were chosen to bear fruit and that our
Father will listen whenever we ask in the name of Jesus. Love will fill us with joy today when we
reach out to share with another.

May is Physical Activity and Sports
Month! Each week there will be tips
from "Teens Health" from Nemours
(kidshealth.org)
Teen Health - A guide to eating for
sports
Eating for peak performance is all
about the right foods in the right
amounts. Teen athletes have unique
nutritional needs. Teen athletes may
need from 2,000 to 5,000 calories per
day to meet their energy needs. If
they do not eat enough their bodies
won't perform as well.
Athletes and Dieting -since teen ath-
letes need extra fuel it is a bad idea to
diet. If a coach or team mate says you
need to go on a diet - talk to your doc-
tor first or visit a sports dietician. they
can help develop a plan for proper
nutrients for performance while los-
ing weight.
Eat a variety of foods - Carbohy-
drates are an important source of fuel
but don't just concentrate on carbs.
Athletes need vitamins, minerals, pro-
tein, and fats to stay at peak perform-
ance.
Carb Charge - Carbohydrates are an
excellent source of fuel. If an athlete
restricts carbs they will feel tired and
worn out. Eat good sources such as
fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Avoid sugary carbs such as candy bars
or sodas. These can lead to a quick
burst of energy and then a "crash"
before the game or workout is over.
(kidshealth.org)
Salud de Adolescentes – Guía de
alimentación para los deportes
Alimentarse para máximo rendimien-
to tiene que ver con los alimentos
correctos en las cantidades correctas.
Los atletas adolescentes tienen nece-
sidades nutricionales únicas. Puede
que los atletas adolescentes necesiten
de 2,000 a 5,000 calorías por día para
cumplir con sus necesidades energéti-
cas. Si no comen lo suficiente, sus
cuerpos no funcionarán bien.
Atletas y Dieta – Como los atletas
adolescentes necesitan energía extra,
es mala idea hacer dieta. Si un entre-
nador o un compañero de equipo
dice que necesita hacer dieta – hable
primero con su médico o visite un
dietista deportivo. Ellos pueden ayu-
darlo a desarrollar un plan de nutrien-
tes apropiados para rendimiento
mientras se pierde peso.
Consuma variedad de alimentos –
Los carbohidratos son una fuente im-
portante de energía, pero no se con-
centre solo en carbohidratos. Los atle-
tas necesitan vitaminas, minerales,
proteínas y grasas para mantener el
máximo rendimiento.
Carga de carbohidratos - Los car-
bohidratos son una fuente de energía
excelente. Si un atleta restringe los
carbohidratos se sentirá cansado y
agotado. Consuma buenas fuentes
tales como frutas, vegetables y granos
enteros. Evite carbohidratos azucara-

Everyday Stewardship
"Get Together" was a popular song in 1967 by the
Youngbloods. I was not alive when the song was released,
but it was a song I played frequently learning how to play
guitar when I was younger. The song called for all of us to
come together and "try to love one another right now." It
was a song that came out in the Vietnam War era and dur-
ing somewhat of a hippie revolution, but perhaps the
words belong to no real moment in time. They are simply
the commands of Jesus.
Sometimes we minimize the power of love by cute pop
songs and slogans that mean little without action. How-
ever, we can never underestimate the power of love. Love
can tear down barriers between people, change tears to
laughter, and mend relationships torn apart by sin.
No option exists for disciples of Jesus Christ to not love
others. Not only are we commanded to do so, but love is a
gift we must pass on freely. If we give of our time, talent,
and treasure, but choose not to love, we cannot claim to
be truly committed disciples and good stewards. As this
Easter season draws ever closer to an end, we must allow
our love to bear witness to the source of all love, the Risen
Jesus. This is our calling until, as the words of the
Youngbloods' song states, "the one who left us here re-
turns for us at last."
--Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
--Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
The Daughters of Isabella met
April 9, 2018 at the Knights of Colum-
bus Hall at 6:30 for the Salad Supper.
Guests were Bobett Kriech, Sherry
Kropp, and Lena Jackson.
Sr. Carol Gerke led the group in prayer
before the supper. A delicious salad
supper and fellowship were enjoyed by
all. Following supper, Whitney Cromley
shared her program “Cancer Perks”, an
organization that assists cancer pa-
tients. A bag of items that are helpful to
the patients is given to each new can-
cer patient at Bothwell and Fitzgibbon
Hospitals. If a patient needs help on
mileage, there is a $250 maximum for
gas cards. The program is solely funded
by donations. Next, Linda shared some
information about the Daughters of
Isabella
that in-
cluded our
motto, spiritual activities, friendship,
fundraising, community involvement,
Queen Isabella, and our structure of the
organization.
Regent Linda Hoffmann called
to order the meeting. The members
read the Opening Ode together and
the pledge of the flag was held. Lena
Jackson and Bobett Kriech joined the
circle as new members. State Newslet-
ter, which included information about
the State Workshop in September in St.
Clair and the International Convention,
was left for the members to read. Infor-
mation will be shared and discussed at
a later time.
Thank you to Connie Thomp-
son, Margaret Ellebracht, Cathy
Korthas, and Pauline Mattingly for the
work on the salad supper. We served
about 40 people at the Community
Café on April 3. June 5 will be our next
night to serve. Ann Dove reported that
11 members still have unpaid dues. She
is sending out a reminder to them.
Theresa Rider reported that the RCIA
breakfast was a success with plenty of
food.
Theresa Rider will be our alternate for
the International Convention. Sr. Carol,
our Spiritual Advisor, will be attending
the International Convention. The cir-
cle will be paying for her registration,
travel and hotel through a motion by
Theresa Rider, seconded by Ramona
Davis and approved by the members.
Members recited the closing
prayer and ode. The next meeting will
be May 14. The Committee members
are Joyce Grinstead, Marge Watson, Sr.
Carol Gerke, and Joy Simon.

Sacred Heart Summer Program Looking for a great place for your child to spend the summer? Look no further, Sacred Heart is offering a summer program that is like your child going to camp! Each week has a different theme with activities to go along with it. They also make weekly trips to
Liberty Pool (costs extra). This fun summer program also includes hot lunch and is for kids aged 6-12. The cost is $90 per week for full time; $22 per day part-time; or $23 per day as needed. If you are interested in signing up or for additional information, please
contact Celinda Smothers at [email protected]
573-280-4974 or 660-829-2803.
Vocation Crucifix
The Sacred Heart Liturgy Commission is implementing a traveling Vocation
Crucifix program to heighten the
awareness that we need to help and support our young people to hear the
call of Christ and if someone feels
called to the priest-hood or religious life, they will know that there are peo-
ple who will support them in their response. The future priests and reli-
gious come from families as they al-ways have. We all have a voice in helping people who are called, to re-spond. Hopefully, this crucifix will
help families talk about the possibility
of one of their children become a priest or religious. If you are inter-ested in being a part of the program please contact the parish office.
Mass Server Training
There will be a training session at Sacred Heart Church on May 20th following the
10am Mass for servers. This is open to any student who has made their First
Communion and is interested. If you are already a server but would like to brush
up your skills you are also welcome to attend.
Any Pianists or Organists out there?
As you know, all of our musicians are volunteers and as summer approaches,
they would like to take vacations and visit their families. So we are asking if there
might be someone who is comfortable in playing a piano or organ and would be
willing to fill in now and then. You would be notified of the songs that are

For Mother’s Day Are you looking for a way to help other and honor your mother or other special woman in your life while at the same time? Local artists have designed beautiful cards for mother’s day, simply pick up at card at the exits of the church, and send a donation in their honor to Birthright. This is a wonderful way to help new mothers that are in need.
