In any process system, it is much more cost

effective to pro-actively design for corrosion

control than to re-actively make repairs

because of design deficiencies. Until now,

sanitary process system designers have

been limited to 300 series stainless steels

and AL-6XN® alloy for sanitary tubing and fit-

tings. Central States Industrial has respond-

ed to the need for a more corrosion resistant

alloy in sanitary process systems. In part-

nership with Haynes International

Incorporated, CSI has developed a stocking

program of Hastelloy® C-22® sanitary tubing

and fittings; the superior alloy for many cor-

rosion-plagued processes.

The corrosion resistance of any metal is only

as good as its design limitations. For

instance, austenitic 300 series stainless

steels perform exceptionally well in many

standard food, beverage, and pharmaceutical

environments. However, in applications

where chlorides are introduced to the

process, upgrading to "super austenitic"

grades such as AL-6XN alloy may

be necessary.

Although AL-6XN alloy solves sev-

eral corrosion issues plaguing

processors' systems, it is not the

answer to all corrosion

problems. Any alloy

will fail when used

in applications

beyond its design

limitations. In indus-

tries such as chemical, bio-technology,

and pharmaceutical processing, both

oxidizing and reducing acids, or chlorides

and high process temperatures may be pres-

ent. In these applications it is advantageous

to use a nickel-based alloy such as Hastelloy

C-22 due to its resistance to localized corro-

sion in these applications.

1

Hastelloy C-22 alloy is the most versatile

nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy

available today. With improved resistance to

both uniform and localized corrosion, it will

out-perform C-276, C-4 alloys, and alloy 625

in a variety of mixed industrial chemicals.

• Chromium enhances passivation.

• Molybdenum and Tungsten enhance nobility and solid solution strength.

• Copper enhances nobility.

• Iron influences passivation.

• Silicon forms pseudo-passive films in super-oxidizing media.

• Biobium, Columbilim, and Tamtalum increase solid solution strength.

2

The Hastelloy C-22 alloy has outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion

cracking. It has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media including wet chlorine and mixtures

containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids with chloride ions. Hastelloy C-22 also offers optimum resist-

ance to environments where reducing and oxidizing conditions are encountered in process streams.

Because of such versatility, it can be used where “upset” conditions are likely to occur, or in multi-

purpose plants.

Hastelloy C-22 alloy has exceptional resistance to a wide

variety of chemical process environments. Some of these

include strong oxidizers such a ferric and cupric chlorides,

chlorine, hot contaminated solutions (organic and inorgan-

ic), formic and acetic acids, acetic anhyride, and seawater and

brine solutions.

To clarify, oxidation is the adding of or combining with oxygen. This term is

sometimes extended to include combining with some other element of negative valence, such as

chlorine. Reduction is the taking away of oxygen or a negative valence.

Hastelloy C-22 alloy resists the formation of grain-boundary precipitates in the heat-affected zone

making it suitable for most chemical process applications in the as-welded condition.

Heat TreatmentWrought forms of Hastelloy C-22 alloy are fur-

nished in the solution heat-treated condition.

Additionally, after severe cold forming such as

elbow bending or tee pulling, CSI performs a

complete solution anneal at 2050° F, followed

by an argon quench to eliminate any residual

stress put into the part during fabrication.
