1ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

TEMPLE FANS,

Another year to celebrate being a Temple Owl is in the books. And there was much to celebrate!!

Our athletic teams had tremendous success on the field, highlighted by three programs earning spots in the national polls. Our student-athletes were equally stellar in the classroom with a record four earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards from their respective conferences. I am also proud of the way our young men and women have given back to the community, setting a record for projects and hours in service to others.

Here is a quick glimpse of our major accomplishments:• Football went 10-4, won the American Athletic Conference Championship title and for the first time in school history earned a spot in the Top 25 and a bowl bid in consecutive seasons.

• Women’s Basketball finished at 24-8 overall, made its ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and was ranked as high as 20th in the country.

• Gymnastics earned its best 10 scores in program history during the 2016-17 season, and sent its first individual qualifier, Daisy Todd, to NCAA Regionals since 2009.

• Fencing cruised to a school-record 34 wins and earned a program-best national ranking of sixth.

• Women’s Lacrosse had its best start in 20 years and posted a record of 13-5.

• Volleyball finished the year at 22-8 (15-5 in league play) and narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament.

• Men’s Soccer had another double-figure win campaign, 10-6-2, and boasted four All-Conference selections.

• Men’s Crew had four boats medal at the Dad Vail Regatta.

• Three Temple Football players were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft with Haason Reddick becoming the program’s fourth first round pick while women’s basketball standout Feyonda Fitzgerald was the 20th pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft.

• Owl student-athletes earned a combined GPA of 3.18 for the spring semester, marking the 11th straight semester that Temple student-athletes as a whole have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA.

• Sixteen of Temple’s 19 varsity sports posted a combined semester GPA above a 3.00 with women’s cross country earning the highest recorded semester GPA in department history of 3.75.

• Overall, 16 programs earned a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0, led by women’s volleyball (3.56) and men’s tennis (3.54).

• Temple student-athletes posted an 88 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which sets a school-record for the seventh consecutive year. Temple also posted its highest Federal Graduation Rate (71%) since 2010.

• The Temple Sports Complex – home to men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and cross country and track, and the East Park Canoe House – home to men’s crew and women’s rowing, opened this year, providing our student-athletes with state-of-the-art new facilities to call their own.

All of these accomplishments have been made, in part, due to the generosity of our donors who again set a record for giving to Temple Athletics with an annual fundraising increase by 20 percent from the previous year.

On behalf of Temple Athletics, I thank you for your support, and look forward to seeing you during the 2017-18 athletic year. GREATNESS DOESN’T QUIT.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENTNANCY & DONALD RESNICK ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES Student-athletes at Temple face unique pressures and demanding schedules as they represent Temple in the classroom, on the field, on the court and across the country. Not only do they matriculate at an extremely diverse comprehensive learning environment, but they also compete in some of the nation’s top athletic confer-ences. They enjoy an active lifestyle in the world-famous city of Philadelphia. And they have the enthusiastic and dedicated support of the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes, better known as the Resnick Center. From admission through graduation, the Resnick Center provides advising, tutoring, specialized services, assistive technology and more to all Temple University student-athletes. Every step of the way, we do every-thing we can to help our Temple Owls be the best stu-dents-and the best athletes- they can be.

MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES Continuing to expand on an already successful program implemented in recent years, Temple Athletics expanded its mental health resources by retaining the services of mental health professional, Dr. Annie Yocum. Similar to Dr. Cohen, Dr. Yocum provides regular, one-on-one counseling services for student-athletes across all teams.

STUDENT-ATHLETE WELFARE The development of Temple’s student-athletes tran-scends the classroom and training facilities. Temple Ath-letics takes a holistic approach to student-athlete wel-fare. From career services to programming and services addressing mental health concerns, Temple University has demonstrated a commitment to providing exception-al resources to ensure a comprehensive student-athlete experience.

STUDENT-ATHLETE CAREER SERVICES In 2016-17, staff in the Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes worked to invigorate career services for student-athletes in an attempt to expose them to resources that will assist in their assimilation into the workforce after their playing careers end. Throughout an enhanced partnership with the Career Center, Karen Demmler, Career Coach, continues to work directly with student-athletes and provide on-sight career coaching sessions in the Resnick Center. Working closely with the Career Center’s Employer Partnerships Team, Temple hosted two large scale career events, where employers and student-athletes connected on campus to learn more about their value added as stu-dent-athletes and discuss various employment possibili-ties. Recognizing that many Owls opt to continue their education after earning their undergraduate degrees, Temple Athletics continued its partnership with KAPLAN, the leader in graduate test preparation resources, to al-low student-athletes to apply for test prep courses at no cost. Fifteen student-athletes participated in GRE, GMAT, MCAT or LSAT prep courses throughout the spring se-mester.

VERIFIED AT THE RESNICK CENTER In order to further establish a cross-department cul-ture of career planning and development, in the spring of 2017 the Resnick Center unveiled a branded program for its career services. The VERIFIED program was designed in partnership with Temple’s Career Center to provide concrete steps for student-athletes in their professional growth. Nearly 90 student-athletes opted in to the VERIFIED program, which after completing five tasks towards their verification, were afforded access to events, a VERFIED-branded t-shirt, business kit, and participation in the exciting “Pro Owls” social media campaign.

The program culminated with an exciting Owls of Capitol Hill experience, where student-athletes traveled to the nation’s capital for a full day of programming. The trip was coordinated by Temple Athletics and its Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes with spe-cial assistance from Kristin Dini Hernandez from Temple Government Affairs. It was a three-part excursion with the first stop at the Capitol Building to meet with Penn-sylvania legislatures and Temple alums working on the Hill. House Representatives on hand to meet with the Owls were Robert Brady, Dwight Evans, Patrick Meehan, Brendan Boyle and Glenn “GT” Thompson. Student-ath-letes also heard an impactful message from Temple football alum and current Senior Associate Counsel and Special Advisor to the President, James Schultz. Next, the Owl student-athletes were treated to a panel at Nationals Park of Temple alumni business leaders in the D.C. area which was moderated by former women’s rower and current reporter for Politico, Ali Watkins (‘14). Panelists included Steve Charles (‘80), Executive VP/Co-Founder of immixGroup, Lise D’Andrea (‘87), former lacrosse player and current CEO/Founder of CSE, Inc., Vivien Dietz (‘66), LCSW-C, LICSW, BCD, Social Worker, Mark Levin (‘86), Director of Salary Cap and Agent Administration, NFLPA, Kia Johnson (‘86), former women’s basketball player and current producer for Reuters, and Jim Van Stone (‘94), President of Business Operations, Monumental Sports and Entertainment. The final stop on the trip was at the Under Armour Office in Baltimore where the group was able to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Owls’ Official Apparel company.

33ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

SPORTS MEDICINEVISION STATEMENT All student-athletes are entitled to the state-of-the-art care that can be provided while here at Temple Uni-versity. The Sports Medicine Team and the Team Phy-sician collaborate in order to coordinate, provide and deliver the appropriate preventative services, rehabilita-tive services, and treatment options to each student-ath-lete in a professional setting. The NCAA, affiliated conferences and the University have specific guidelines that must be followed by the Athletics Department, team physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, and student-ath-letes. It is the goal of the Sports Medicine Team to keep each student-athlete safe, healthy, and injury-free. In the event of an injury or illness, the Sports Medicine Team will provide quality medical care that enables the student-athlete to return to full participation in not only the sports world but also the classroom.

MISSION STATEMENT As a highly motivated team of professionals, we strive to provide an excellent standard of care to all our Temple student-athletes, who compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletic competition, and in doing so aid in developing outstanding leadership experiences for our Temple Owls. Through sound medical and reha-bilitative principles, excellent care, and proper consider-ation given to both the personal and team goals of each student-athlete, this goal can be achieved.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONINGMISSION STATEMENT To provide a combination of Strength & Speed disciplines in a safe manner that will enable Temple University to possess the strongest, fastest, and most explosive college athletes in the nation - PERIOD.

METHODOLOGY Temple University Strength & Conditioning Depart-ment’s goal is to enhance athletic performance through 6 components: strength training, power and explosion development, flexibility, speed & agility training, core training, and nutrition; combined with injury prevention, increased confidence and a positive self image. Our purpose is to train athletes for their maximal perfor-mance in athletic competition. The role of this depart-ment is to put to action the highest level of education and resources needed to maintain the optimal level of competition for each individual athlete. The foundation of Owl Strength & Conditioning is based on the tenets of Accountability, Consistency, Organi-zation, Competi-tion, Education, and Atttitude. We utilize Team-Based Training because having teams lift together provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills, and a competitive environment that will carry over to the field of play. We want to cultivate an atmosphere where the athlete is constantly provided feedback and can eval-uate him/herself for weaknesses and able to put in the extra work to correct or modify any deficiencies in order to develop better athleticism for their particular sport.

POWERPONG Temple SAAC hosted the university’s first ever Pow-erPong tournament, an event combining an educational experience with the opportunity to support the local community while promoting safe and smart decisions in the college environment. In addition to a fundraising tournament, Temple welcomed a special guest from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving. Proceeds from the event were donated to Mother’s Against Drunk Driving.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY On March 24 student-athletes from the fencing, women’s soccer and football teams participated in a Habitat for Humanity build right in North Philadelphia. Prior to the build, the Temple athletic department, led by SAAC, helped raise $1,000 to be donated to Habitat for Humanity to help offset the cost for future Habitat builds.

DUNBAR BASKETBALL SURPRISE Temple men’s basketball held a different type of “practice” on Monday morning, October 17, as they surprised local elementary schoolers at Dunbar Promise Academy with a pick-up game.

SASS SUPPORT EVENT During National Coming Out Week, the student-ath-letes of the Temple Student-Athlete Safe Space (SASS) hosted OwlEyes for Allies, a pledge drive that encour-aged students and staff to show their support for an inclusive environment. Members of the Temple Athletics community had the opportunity to sign a note of sup-port at the Resnick Academic Support Center. SASS received a total of 174 pledges over the course of the week. Temple is a member of the founders club for the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program, an organization designed to help athletic leadership champion a culture of respect and inclusion. SASS hopes to bring several other initiatives to Temple.

“IT’S ON US” PLEDGE DAY On Monday, April 17, Temple student-athletes joined those across all three NCAA divisions for the It’s On Us Student-Athlete Day of Action. In efforts to encourage fellow student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the greater Temple community to take the It’s On Us Pledge, the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) collected over 113 names during its day-long pledge drive. In the midst of Sexual Assault Awareness month, SAAC held its pledge drive in front of the Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Stu-dent-Athletes. SAAC representatives from each varsity sport encouraged those that stopped by the table to take the online It’s On Us Pledge and bring home an It’s On Us pledge sticker as well as a teal ribbon, the designated symbol for support of sexual assault aware-ness. Those who took the pledge were also given the opportunity to take pictures with Temple’s It’s On Us cutout and share with friends via social media using the Temple day of action’s custom snapchat filter.

NARAN TAKES “IT’S ON US” CAMPAIGN TO CAPITOL BUILDINGS Vineet Naran, Temple men’s tennis SAAC represen-tative, was an invited guest to both the White House and the Pennsylvania state capitol for his work on the campaign. Naran spoke as a panelist at the It’s On Us Summit in Washington D.C. in January, as part of the It’s On Us initiative created by the White House Council on Wom-en and Girls to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault on college campuses for both men and women. This campaign urges the public stand up against sexual assault and step away from the sidelines to be an active part of the solution. Naran’s panels included “It’s On Us Communities: Pennsylvania,” moderated by Andrea Mead, Chief of Staff to the First Lady, Office of the Governor of Penn-sylvania and “Changing the Culture Through Sports,” moderated by Neil Irvin, Executive Director Men Can Stop Rape. Then Vice President Joe Biden also made a surprise guest appearance to speak to the attendees. In Harrisburg, Naran was on hand to witness Gover-nor Tom Wolf introduce legislation surrounding sexual assault in April. Governor Wolf’s six new pieces of legis-lation lend a hand to the It’s On Us campaign with aims to end sexual violence on college campuses. Naran addressed the room at the State Capitol on behalf of It’s On Us and the NCAA Division I student-athletes taking part in the campaign. It’s On Us is an initiative to raise awareness and change the culture of sexual assault on college cam-puses. After winning this year’s NCAA Division I Stu-dent-Athlete Advisory Committee It’s On Us video contest, Temple SAAC aims to continue to take action on campus to address the issue and create change.

FLOWERS FOR KATIE’S MOM Track and field junior Katie Pinson gathered togeth-er with members of the Temple community on Sunday, April 23, to hold a planting ceremony in honor of her mother, who passed away in Spring 2015. Pinson spear-headed a campaign to raise money for Women in Tran-sition, through the purchase and planting of flowers at Temple Sports Complex. Pinson’s mother was an avid gardener and it is Pinson’s hope that the flowers are a reminder of the importance of philanthropy and making a difference in your local community. Pinson chose to donate the profits to Women in Transition because it is within our local community and because the orga-nization is dedicated to assisting women and children who have been victims of domestic violent, substance abuse, and poverty.

More than 2,500 students from over 25 local schools came to the Liacouras Center to learn about the importance of community service projects while cheering on the Owls. The students got to experience a question and answer session with Head Coach Tonya Cardoza, the Elmwood Park Zoo, the American Heart Association and three Temple student-athletes. They also got to experience a hands on basketball clinic given by the assistant basket-ball coaches. Throughout the game, the students par-ticipated in interactive promotions and received prizes. The Owls extended their undefeated School-Day game winning streak by beating Tulsa 70-43.

ENDOWMENTS

Endowments are gifts that keep on giving. Endow-ments are permanently invested by Temple University and generate earnings and interest for the purpose you choose to support; scholarships, coaches, facility maintenance, sport-specific program support, and much more. A gift to the endowment program is invested into a pool of funds managed by the University. A portion of the earnings from the investment provides annual support to the designated area. The remaining earnings are reinvested to grow the endowment to provide sup-port in perpetuity. To learn more about establishing an Endowment Fund or supporting an existing fund, please contact the Temple Owl Club at 215-204-CLUB (2582).

FOREVER OWLS/GIFT PLANNING

Forever Owls and gift planning provides the oppor-tunity to establish an enduring legacy through long-term philanthropic support of Temple Athletics. Remember-ing Temple Athletics in a will or living trust is an acces-sible and easy way to express your support. Special arrangements may enable you to plan a gift that will reduce taxes on your estate, provide capital support, or establish an endowment in your name or in memory of a loved one. Whichever option you choose, a bequest costs nothing now and yet gives the immediate satisfac-tion of achieving your philanthropic goals, while provid-ing critical financial support to Temple Athletics. If you have included Temple Athletics in your estate plans or to learn more about leaving a legacy, please contact the Temple Owl Club at 215-204-CLUB (2582).

T-CLUBMISSION

The mission of the T-Club is to provide members with the opportunity to foster and maintain long-term relationships with coaches, teammates, and the univer-sity’s athletic department. The T-Club strives to strength-en the bond between Temple Letterwinners, to enhance the history and traditions of Temple University, and to create a culture where members can return and support athletic programs.
