It was great to see so many grandparents and friends in attendance. This year we had over two hundred grandparents visit us, with some coming from as far away as Italy and England. The students loved having their grandparents at school and were proud to share their school work with them. Some students shared their work about grandparents at our special assembly. We were entertained by the Bunyip Band conducted by Cameron Smith and the whole school sang a special song, ‘Welcome to All People’ conducted by Mrs Sherab. Mr Vockler accompanied us on the guitar. Thank you to Mrs Kneipp for organising the assembly, the canteen for providing the scones, the staff who were involved in the performances, as well as setting up and for providing the rest of the delicious morning tea. It was a real team effort. Also, a special thank you to Kellie Marshall and her business ‘Tea Shop Byron Bay’ for donating their time, beautiful cups and tea for this event. Kellie generously donated her time last year and we thank her for ongoing support of our school. The ‘Tea Shop’ can be found online at www.teashop.net.au. It was a real team effort and our grandparents were most appreciative. Classroom Visits and Principals Awards During the last week, I spent considerable time visiting classrooms observing the high standard of teaching and learning that is taking place. I presented Principals Awards (stickers) to two students, from each class, who have made a pleasing start to Term 4. I observed 5W who were doing an art lesson and gave awards to booth Zoe and Marlow. In 2T they were learning about mathematics and awards went to Jarvis and Zade. 2C were doing an art lesson and awards went to Boyd and Japhi. 4P were participating in a personal development lesson and awards were given to Isabelle and Sam. 2W were involved in talking and listening activities and awards were presented to Goldie and Trystan. Congratulations to these students, keep up the good work. Each class was a pleasure to be in.

Stage 3 Public Speaking Please note that last week’s newsletter had the incorrect date for the YR 5 & 6 Public Speaking Competition, it is on Friday 9 November at 12.20 pm.

Classes for 2019 Shortly we will begin forming anticipated classes for 2019. The staff put a lot of time and effort into forming classes. Although parents cannot request specific teachers, you can outline aspects of your child’s development that may need special consideration. If there are exceptional circumstances around your child’s learning needs and you wish to discuss your child’s class placement for 2019, please discuss this with your child’s teacher first and then if warranted, follow up with a written request sent to the school, using the email address at the top of the first page by 16 November. Please note, only written requests will be considered and if your request does not fit the above mentioned criteria, then it will not be considered.

The Bands’ Big Play Day On Friday, all of our band students were invited to attend ‘The Big Play Day’ at the Conservatorium of Music in Lismore, along with their dedicated instrument tutors and other students from a range of schools around the Byron Shire. The students had a fantastic day out. They were separated into mixed groups for Concert Band, Rock Band, String Ensemble and Guitar-kestra, where they rehearsed with their regular tutors from the Conservatorium. In the afternoon, all students presented an explosive concert for many of their parents and loved ones. Mrs Sherab and Ms Karp were extremely impressed by our students’ commitment to their musical craft. Our Band students represented our school with the upmost pride. As they ventured back to school in the afternoon, the children were buzzing with a reignited passion and love for music. We are all looking forward to their next performance at the Band Recital on 28 November, 2018.

Congratulations to all students who attended ‘The Big Play Day’ and a heart felt thank you to our Band Co-ordinator, Cameron Smith for getting our band students involved in such a wonderful experience.

Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Library News Year 6 have been offered a complimentary author visit by Karen Foxlee, author of outstanding novel “Lenny’s Book of Everything”. Karen will visit our school on Thursday 1 November at 2.00pm to talk to Year 6 about her books, writing novels and the magic of literature. Thanks Karen and ‘The Bookroom’ for the visit and offer to impart your knowledge to our enthusiastic Year 6 students.

Band News The band students have been busy, firstly The Wilderband played two songs at the Grandparents Assembly and were very well received by the audience. Then fifty students attended The Big Play Day at the Conservatorium in Lismore on Friday. The students were very well behaved and enjoyed playing with their peers from other schools. The highlight of the day was the Concert in the afternoon. Thanks to the parents who were able to attend. Everyone came back excited and enthusiastic about being a member of the band. Thanks to Ms Karp and Mrs Sherab for accompanying the students and to Cameron, the other tutors and the Conservatorium for a fantastic day.

Sport - Equestrian Congratulations to Nelly - 2W and her pony Twinkle, who travelled to Grafton to compete in the ‘Clarence Valley Equestrian All Schools Challenge’. Over 150 competitors from many different schools competed over the weekend in what were very hot, long days. The event started with a march past in alphabetical order, so Byron Bay Public School was first up. Nelly wasn’t worried, being the only representative from the school. Nelly came home with 13 ribbons. Winning most of her events and placing 3rd in Dressage. Nelly was placed 1st and took home the Champion 8 Year Old Rider for the weekend. There is no higher achievement.

age appropriate questions each year until they graduate from High School. Each year about 40 minutes of video will be collected and stored securely. The footage is made available to students when they leave High School. For more information see attached flyer or go to http://theschooloflifeproject.org/.

Growth Mindset In Term 4, all of the students at BBPS will be discussing in their class, concepts that relate to having a Growth Mindset.

Our focus for the next 2 weeks is – ‘The Learning Pit’. The Learning Pit is a place that we all go when we are learning a new concept. It is the strategies that we use to ‘get out of the pit’ that allows us to achieve new learning. The lifelong skills of determination and persistence will be a focus.

Strategies that the students will be taught include self-talk, helping us to work out what to do when we are faced with a challenge and why going into the pit is essential.

It would be great if you could have a discussion with your child/ren about the ‘Learning Pit’.

What is the Learning Pit?

How do you get in?

What sort of things can you do to get out?

For more information about the ‘Learning Pit’ watch this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwsmicqjyFg Growth Mindset Committee Michelle Spry AP St2
