1897- became president Did his best to avoid anything with Cuba 1898- Abandoned his diplomatic efforts and
asked Congress to intervened in Cuba. 1897 – asked for donations for the Red Cross
to help Cuba Donated 5 thousand anonymously.

On April 25, 1898 Congress declares war. Continued into summer of 1899
Peace Protocal was signed on Aug. 12 Spain United States
Next day Aug. 13 Dewey and Wesley unaware of the Peace
Protocal attacked the Spanish forcing them to Surrender.
