“We had a wonderful time,” Bauersaid. “I hoped I was able to pass on a littleof my own passion and provide whatDylan fans call ‘touched by the handof Bob,’ a moment when your eyesare opened to his genius.”

Though only two years old, theauction has already become one of thetop events on the law school calendar.Sponsored by the Equal Justice Founda-tion and the Iowa Student Bar Associa-tion, the money raised by the auction isused to fund stipends that help studentsperforming public interest law internshipscover their living expenses.

“Most public interest law organiza-tions pay little or nothing to their interns,so many students can’t afford to take thembecause they can’t afford to work fornothing,” said Daniel Feltes (’06),co-president of the EJF. He said the groupawards as many as 15 stipends a year tostudents to work for public defenders andprosecutors offices, legal aid societies andgovernment agencies in Iowa and acrossthe country. In the past, students haveinterned at such organizations as the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency, theCenter for Constitutional Rights, the

JEFF SCUDDER (’06) is not a particu-larly big fan of Bob Dylan or his music. He knows Dylan is a great writer andrevolutionary musician, but beyond thathe doesn’t know much more about himthan what he’s heard on “Like a RollingStone” or “Rainy Day Women” or thehandful of other classic Dylan songsflogged to death on oldies radio.

So when the third-year law studenthad the opportunity to spend an eveninglistening to Dylan’s songs with Dylan-phileand law professor Pat Bauer, he decided tolearn more about what made this excellentpoet with the lousy singing voice so great. The evening was offered by Bauer at theLaw School Auction, so Scudder andclassmates Jason Fernandez (’06), PatrickVint (’06) and Matt Hektoen (’06) putin a bid.

Their bid successful, they spent anevening listening to Bauer’s impressivecollection of Dylanalia while discussinghow it is that one gets tangled up in blue.

“The stipends don’t cover all theirexpenses, but we hope it’s enough to coverrent and a few other costs,” said MaggieManternach (’06), ISBA president. Thefirst auction in 2004 raised more than$7,000 to help cover those expenses, shesaid. The 2005 auction increased that sumto more than $10,000 by selling 52 itemsin both a live and a silent auction in theIowa Memorial Union’s Second FloorBallroom. Hosts and auctioneers wereesteemed professors and less-esteemedcomedians John Allen and Mark Janis, with musical entertainment provided byother law students.

In general, food was the most popularoffering on the block, with numerousfaculty members offering meals at IowaCity restaurants or in their homes.Professors Arthur Bonfield, Adrien Wing,Tung Yin and Ethan Stone were amongthe many who fed successful bidders.Professor Gerald Wetlaufer offered to fill

their veins with cholesterol at theHamburg Inn. Professor and DeanEmeritus Bill Hines made a walleye andwild rice dinner with fish caught duringhis summer sojourn at Cass Lake.Professors Jill Gaulding and AlexanderSomek provided dessert, Gaulding withpies baked using recipes from herGrandma Nelly (she also threw in a lessonon pie-baking the Nelly way) and Somekwith a fresh-baked topfenstrudel, a dessertfrom his native Austria.

Professors Katie Porter and MarcellaDavid offered stitching and knittinglessons. Professor and President EmeritusSandy Boyd offered a private tour of thenewly-renovated Old Capitol. There weregolf outings, tennis matches, more food, musical get-togethers, doggie daycare, andstill more food.

There was art: a painting by ProfessorPeggie Smith, a Rajasthani shawl broughtfrom India by Professor Lea VanderVelde, dance lessons from Christine Eichinger(’08). And there was the practical: Onemonth of grocery shopping from studentJessica Blome (’07), two hours of snowshoveling from students Stevi Steines (’08)and Nellie Viner (’08), and a night ofbabysitting from students Sehee Foss (’07)and Kara Christensen (’08).

Then there were the….shall we say, lessconventional offerings. Professors ToddPettys and Sheldon Kurtz making over a

student in the Queer Eye spirit. ProfessorJohn Reitz teaching how to tie histrademark bow tie. Professor JimTomkovicz blubbering over the movie“Field of Dreams.” An evening of pokerwith Professors Pettys and Hillary Sale.

“We get some pretty creative contribu-tions,” said Feltes.

But participants said the mostenjoyable part about the auction issocializing with professors and spendingtime with people they respect in adifferent context.

“There aren’t many activities in the lawschool that generate so much faculty-studentinteraction,” said Manternach. “It’simportant to get together outside of classand see each other in settings like this.”

Scudder agrees.“I’m a casual fan of Bob Dylan, but a

big fan of Professor Bauer,” he said. “Heputs a lot of work into his classes and hereally cares about his students. He’s one ofthose professors that alumni tell me I willremember long after I graduate becausehe made such a difference in their lives.”

Feltes said a third auction will be heldnext fall and the EJF and ISBA will beinviting alumni back to Iowa City for theevent, and to make contributions to beauctioned. For more information or tocontribute, contact auction coordinatorSehee Foss at [email protected].
