After the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, inDecember 2012, people all around the world werestruggling to find a way to express their sympathy andsupport for the families, the school, and the community. They wanted to do something meaningful. Somethingtangible. But they didn’t know what. One of the parents ofa Sandy Hook Elementary School student had an idea:Snowflakes For Sandy Hook. The Connecticut PTA sent out a release to PTAsacross the country asking for children to make and sendsnowflakes to decorate the halls of the new schoolthat the Sandy Hook students were moving to innearby Monroe. They wanted to create a “winterwonderland” to comfort and welcome thestudents. The PTA expected a few boxes to comein, mostly from other schools in Connecticut. Theywere not prepared for what actually happened. Almost immediately, thousands upon thousands ofhandmade snowflakes started pouring in from around theworld. Boxes and bundles, piles and pallets appeared. Eventractor trailer trucks pulled up to their post office to bringthem snowflakes. There was literally a blizzard of them! They came in all shapes and sizes, made from all sorts ofthings. Most of them came from children, but everyonewho made them poured their hearts into the project. Sogreat was the outpouring that soon, they had over a

million snowflakes! They had put up a map with pins toshow where the snowflakes were coming from. Butquickly, the map became mostly pins! The people of Newtown were deeply touched by thisamazing show of love, kindness, and support. And theycertainly had enough to create their winter wonderland. But the snowflakes didn’t stop coming. So the SandyHook PTA put out a message (from Facebook): “Thank you to everyone who has donated snowflakeson behalf of the children of Sandy Hook ElementarySchool and the community of Newtown. We know that

each snowflake represents the emotional outreach of theperson making it. We have been overwhelmed by theoutpouring of generosity from around not just thecountry but the world. At this time, we have enough

beautiful snowflakes to blanket the community ofNewtown. Therefore, with regret we must close thesnowflake project to further donations. Please take thisidea and your snowflakes and create a winter wonderlandof your own in your community as a show of solidarity forour Newtown families. Please share your winterwonderlands with us. We would love to share your pictureswith the families of Sandy Hook and all the otherparticipating communities. Thank you for your heartfeltand amazing creations and for all of your magnificentnotes and kind wishes for the Newtown community.”

“A Million Little Snowflakes” is lovingly dedicated tothe people of Newtown. You could say it’s our way ofsending them a snowflake, too. More than that though, wewanted to offer it to you and your students as well in thehopes it might help in some small way. You need not doany more than have them sing it in class if you wish. Orperhaps you want them to share it with an audience attheir winter concert. It’s very simple and short, and it’swritten to be easily performed by young children. To expand on the idea, have students actuallycreate their own handmade snowflakes to showwhile they sing (as marked in the music or howeveryou prefer). Make extras and use them asdecorations to create a winter wonderland in yourschool or community, as the Sandy Hook PTA suggested. And yes, you could make it a show of solidarity for theNewtown families if it seems appropriate in your situation. The message of the song can be taken at face value, which is fine, especially for your youngest. Or it can beseen more poetically or symbolically. If you find itresonates with any of your students, you may wish to havea discussion about the possible deeper meanings. If itseems too delicate, consider having the principal or aschool counselor present as well. Whether you and your students participated in

“Snowflakes For Sandy Hook” or not, you can see how aproject like this can have a lasting impact on everyoneinvolved. We have since heard stories of schools who haveused snowflakes as a vehicle for other charitable causes. You could do something like this as well using not onlythe snowflakes, but the song as part of your project. Forexample, choose a charity or cause you want to help.Involve your students in this choice to make it moremeaningful. Come up with a way to connect thesnowflakes with your project. Perhaps you just have thearea where your concert or fund-raising event is helddecorated with lots of the snowflakes. You can name theevent accordingly, like “Snowflake Ball,” or “A SeasonOf Snowflakes.” Or, you could give a snowflake to

everyone who attends a charity performance as a keepsakeor in exchange for a small donation, like 50 cents or adollar. Or perhaps in exchange for a can of food, whichyou would then donate to your local food pantry. Getcreative with ideas to make it special, but always includeyour students’ ideas if possible. Connecting the notion to the students of Sandy Hookand their snowflake project is also up to you. This is such adifficult topic, but at the same time the messages ofsupport, generosity, compassion, and helping others arevaluable lessons you could be reinforcing.
