• Numerator – the top number (describes how many are included)

• Denominator – the bottom number (describes how many are in all)

PARTS OF A FRACTION

• Improper fraction – A fraction in which the numerator is larger that the denominator.

TYPES OF FRACTIONS

• Mixed number – A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction put together.

• Changing an improper fraction to a mixed number

Ex 4 3Step 1: Rewrite the fraction to complete long division. (The denominator into the numerator)

Step 2: Divide the fraction (do not add a decimal or zeros).

Step 3: Identify the parts of the division problem and re-write it as a missed number.

Step 1: Multiply the whole number (7) by the denominator (5).

7 x 5 = 35

Step 2: Add the product (35) to the numerator (2).

35 + 2 = 37

Step 3: Place the sum (37) over the denominator (5)

• Changing a decimal to a percent.

• Step 1: Move the decimal two place values to the left.

* Add zeros as needed.

*If you don’t see a decimal, it is located behind the last number (in front of the percent sign.)

• Ex. 76.5% = .765

• Ex. 2% = .02

• Step 1: Move the decimal two place values to the right.

* Add zeros as needed.

*If you don’t see a decimal, it is located behind the last number

• Step 2: Add the percent sign.

* Leave the decimal if there are numbers behind the decimal after you move it.

* Drop the decimal if there are no numbers behind the decimal after you move it.

• Ex. .57 = 57%

• Ex. 5.3875 = 538.75%

CONVERTING A DECIMAL TO A PERCENTS

• Changing a fraction to a decimal 2 3Step 1: Rewrite the fraction to complete long division. (The denominator into the numerator)

Step 2: Place a decimal behind the last number in the dividend and directly above the decimal in the quotient.

Step 3: Add three zeros behind the decimal in the dividend.

Step 4: Complete the division problem using DMSB, divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down.

CONVERTING FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS

• Repeating decimals – a decimal that has one or more digits that repeat for ever.

- Place a line only over the number that is repeating.

• Step 1: Use the actual number as the numerator.
