GEOGRAPHY

Lorraine lies in the Northeastern part of France.

Known for its forested areas, since one-third of the region is forests.

The capital city is Metz It includes four departments: Meuse,

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, and Vosges.

Area: 23,574 sq km.

Surrounded by the regions: Alsace(east), Franche-Comte(south), and Champagne-Ardenne(west).

Three sports that fir Lorraine best : walking, mountain biking, and hiking.

Vosges Mountain range provides many activities during summer and winter.

Summer: horse back riding, running, and biking

Winter: CROSS COUNTRY SKIING! Water sports are also well known, they

include: fishing, swimming, water skiing, and much more.

HISTORY

Formed in 843, after King Charlemagne’s death

Before it was under the Roman rule, it belonged to two tribes: Leuci and Mediomatrici.

After it was under Roman control, it became part of Belgium Province of the Roman Empire.

Birthplace of Joan of Arc- Military leader and national heroine.

MORE….HISTORY

In 1776, it became part of France’s government control.

In 1870, when the French lost the Franco-Prussian War Germany took Lorraine. After World War One, Lorraine retuned to France.

During World War Two, Germany once again took Lorraine.

Confirmed by the Treaty of Versailles, France had Lorraine back, and has had it ever since 1919.

Many foods are inspired by Germany Different specialties all over the region
