EVlLYN STRANGE Mourning Phoebe THIRTEEN 772 MUSIC Mourning Phoebe is the debut release by this powerful trio comprising British brothers Phillip (vocals//:>ass)and AI (drums/ keyboards) Strange and Swedish guitarist Mikael johannesson. They have been around since 1996 and it has taken quite a while for this release but they can be justifiably proud of it as it is an enterprising rock album taking US melodic elements and combining them with the earthier British metal and adding a little Scandinavian flair. The vocals are strong, insistent and expressive and they know how to write catchy and hook laden rock with Johannesson providing the magical spark that brings it all to life. This is a promising and strong debut that ticks all the right boxes and is well worth checking out. The CD is available from www.evilystrange.co.uk. let'sjust hope that the follow up doesn't take as long to release as Mourning Pboebe has. Te ANTOINE FAFARD Occultus 1tamitis UNICORN DIGITAL This is the second solo release by composer and bass player Antoine Fafard, and features a vertiable who's who ofjazz-rock icons. There ,- are eleven tracks here, and all are his own compositions bar the final track, which is his take on Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude No 2 in C Minor - very effectivelyarranged for bass guitar! Each piece was apparently composed with specific players in mind - the author then hoping to persuade each of these to contribute! He's actually done an excellent job: for example, the way that saxophonist jean-Pierre Zanella lets loose on 'Good Reasons' illustrates just how suitable that particular piece's environment is for him - you can almost hear him revelling in it - and Simon PhiUips responds accordingly with equal zest! Indeed, all the guests are allowed to flourish on their respective pieces; and percussion is by no means the least-featured medium here, as the likes of Phillips, Terry Bozzio and Magella Cormier positively sparkle (you can almost feel their enjoyment), while the melodic skills of violinist jerry Goodman are evident on a good deal of the album, in among the contributions of the rest of the stellar cast. Odd time signatures and imaginative modulations pop up throughout, and each piece has its own atmosphere, and functions in its own right, as opposed to merely serving as a showpiece for the guests. Jazz-rock fans will simply lap this up!
