There are stories told about dead Viking warriors being burned
with their ships. Thor the most powerful of the gods. The Vikings
who lived on the coast of Norway went westward to Bret land
(England), Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, Orkney and the
Hebrides. From Norway it is about 350 kilometres to Shetland and
from there you can see the next island, Orkney, and so on. But some
of the Vikings went much further. They moved on to Iceland,
Greenland and even America

Around the year 800 the Vikings began to travel from their
homes in Scandinavia. From the countries we now call Norway,.
Sweden and Denmark. So the Scandinavians or Nordic people began to
explore, trade, attack to the east and the west. Some of them went
a very long way. The Vikings had a lot of children! This meant that
there were a lot of people which had to choose between being
workers on their farms or going over the seas in search of fame and
fortune or new land.

to help them find their way. The Vikings thought a great deal about
their ships Vikings had to prepare for journeys. They were
dangerous.

When the Vikings arrived they built settlements. They gave their
settlements names. Vikings were smelly people. Toilets were holes
dug outside,
