Physical Features

The Hopi’s lived in a desert with many plateaus in which they would settle in. Because of lack water during the summer they would dig hole that they would find water in. The desert would only be able to support corn and berry bushes.

Climate

Since they lived in the desert it is very hot and dry yet very cold overnight . During the winter though they would get some snow and hail but during that time they would usually stay inside and tell stories in there homes and in the kiva next to a fire.

Natural ResourcesThey dug coal from the ground around

their village with long sticks. They found clay on the ground by underground springs and traveled to get wood for their houses.

HousingThey used rocks for walls and covered them in clay to

keep out cold air. They covered the roof with logs and mud to cover the gaps and hold the logs together. This was done by the women and girls when the boys and had to get the logs and bring them back to put them on the roof

ClothingBoys and girls had very different clothing. The boys would wear a

breechcloth or kilt, during the winter though they would wear loose pants and a shirt. The girls would wear mantas and a sash to keep it in place. Everyone would wear leggings when it was really cold and strips of rabbit skin. In the summer the winter both boys and girls wore sandals, in the winter though they would wear moccasins. The moccasins were made of deer skin and the sandals were made of yucca plant. If you were around six you would wear nothing at all if it was really hot.

Arts and Crafts

The Hopi would do lots of arts and crafts. The women wove baskets made pottery. The men sewed clothing and they weaved blankets and rabbit skin blanket.

Fun Facts

When a Hopi child was bad the uncle took them out of the house and poured cold water on them for the whole village to watch. If they were really villagers dressed up as a monster kids believed in and pretended they were going to take the child away. The parents went along with it and pretended to be guarding their kid by saying all the good things he/she have done.
