From the

President by Ben Foreman

Since October of 2010 I have been an employee of Maritime Christian College (MCC), but starting on September 1, 2019 I will be taking on the lead pastor role at Sherwood Christian Church in Charlottetown. I would like to be perfectly clear; my leaving MCC

is 100% for what I believe is best for my family. I have loved my entire time at MCC and will miss working here dearly. I love my coworkers and the work we do. As a man with a wife and 4 young children, I do not feel I can travel as much as the President of MCC.

The last nine years have been some of the best of my ministry career. I am more convinced now than when I started that it is a privilege to be a part of the ministry of MCC. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. So much of what I have, the places I have travelled, the things I’ve experienced, the people I have met and the relationships I have formed is all because of MCC. I have been and continue to be a big believer in the ministry here and its importance. I still plan to support the College in any way I am able and will continue to teach as needed.

I have so appreciated the support I have received from the supporters of MCC, especially in my time as President. I truly consider it an honour to have served in this role following the men that preceded me. I have appreciated your prayers and ask for you to continue to pray for the ministry of MCC. It is so important that men and women take up the fight and become trained for ministry. The College is expanding her reach through new partnerships and the launching of new robust online programing. MCC will look different than it has in the years previous; these changes are necessary to reach more students.

There are exciting days ahead for the College. We have an opportunity to change the face of ministry in the Maritimes and Canada. I encourage you to join us as a student, a FRIEND, a supporter and a partner. We live in a world that is in desperate need of Jesus, please help us bring Him to the lost.

Maritime Christian College’s Explore Program included a trip to Krakow, Poland for service learning with Graceland Ministries. Students assisted english learning by supporting

the classes, allowing adult professionals and teens to practice their english speaking skills. Eight days of service learning were offset with cultural experiences in Krakow’s Old Town, Wieliczka Salt Mine, and nearby Auschwitz.

“The Poland excursion is more than an opportunity to travel overseas,” stated Madison Willows (‘19). “It is a chance to deepen the friendships you have been building with your classmates and to create friendships with the people you meet at Graceland.”

Jay Bowyer and Colette Ladan started Graceland Ministries in 1998. They provide an unique service in Krakow with professional classes, personal relationships and a Christ-centered atmosphere.

An intensive orientation on Polish culture prepared volunteers for their time in Krakow. Appropriate behaviors open doors into lives of interesting people and can give an opportunity to share with others.

“When most people think of school they think of strict rules, learning, and class time but what Jay and Colette have created is so much more than that,” said Colby Stewart, 3rd year student. “They have created a community centered around Jesus.”

“The relationships built during the two weeks of class were a highlight for everyone on the trip,” said Tom Marshall, Academic Dean. “I believe service learning with Graceland students only increases their desire to return to Krakow on a future visit or explore other service opportunities.”

Though hard to believe, it is 25 years ago that I set my heart on serving Jesus Christ in Romania! It was my first year of MCC and my second year of marriage to my wonderful wife, Velda. Why Romania? To be truthful, I have

no idea. Was it God calling? Maybe. Was it a desire of my own? Possibly. But whatever it was, God tells us to serve Him wherever we are! I am a firm believer that it is not about us spending our time looking for God’s will, because He has already told us what His will is: “Go and make disciples of all nations. . . .” (Mt. 28:19). Though it took from 1994 to 2015, Velda

said it was time to do something and we finally set out on our journey.

In September 2015 we bought air fare to Bucharest with the plan of spending the next 3 months moving around Romania and seeing where it would be the best place to serve. We had no contacts there and did not even know where we would be sleeping that first night. But God is so good and 4 days later we ended up in a town called Sighisoara and discovered that we had found the place we now call home for most of the year. We began volunteering at a Christian NGO called Veritas, but also expanded outward working in Roma (Gypsy) communities. Now, 4 years later, we are engaged in work in 3 and sometimes 4 communities and through the generous support of 2 families from Montague Church of Christ we are able to fund our friend Hordo, a young Roma man who has planted a church in his own community. We are involved in children’s ministry and prayer ministry. We work closely with Sarah, a young nurse from Northern Ireland who we have known for the last 4 years, and also with a Romanian couple, Liviu and Elena, who have

a wonderful ministry called Perspective Danes. We also serve along an Englishman, David, who has lived in Romania since 1997. With him, we lead Bible studies and help out in local churches. There is no shortage of ministry needs here, and we have quickly discovered the need for discernment for saying “no” even when it tears at your heart.

Everyone, rich and poor, needs to hear the gospel message. God has given us a heart to serve Him by serving among the Roma people. We work with a people who are very much despised by many and who live in abject poverty. The prejudices they face would shock you. Our ministry is amongst pimps and prostitutes. Horribly abused children and their abusers. With witches and rapists. And in the same villages, we also minister to people who are trusting in and grasping onto the grace of Jesus Christ despite the hardships that they face every day just to exist. The tables we sit at are very much like the tables Jesus sat at. We work in a dark and evil culture, but God is good and we see His light shining more and more.

I finish with these prayer requests: Please pray for Hordo as he ministers in his community. Pray for us in learning the Romanian language (At our age, not easy). Pray for spiritual protection as we fight against the kingdom of Satan. Pray for us not to be overcome by burdens that God does not intend us to carry. And finally, it is also a struggle and a hurt to be away from our family for most of the year. At the time of writing this our 9th grandchild was born today and our 10th is to come along within the next few days! So please pray for perspective on our part and encouragement. Jesus made us a promise (Mt. 19:29), and we need to cling to that.

EXPLORE...The Maritimes

Madison Willows (‘19) will be exploring various camps this summer on behalf of Maritime

Christian College, she will represent the school and recruit new students. Madison is a member of the Harbour Christian Church in Saint John, NB. She will serve as Resident Assistant in the fall as well as starting her second year at MCC.

EXPLORE...The Bible

Each year first year students complete a Bible Knowledge Exam as part of their orientation and again at the end of the year. The scores are compared and the College has a record of their improvement over the

course of the year. Bachelor degree students take the Bible Knowledge Exam their last year at MCC, and the second score is compared to the first score.

On average students improve their Bible knowledge from 40-70% over the course of the year. In some instances, it might be a minor increase around 10-20%. While in other instances a student might improve 183% like a recent student did in 2018-2019 school year, but 40-70% is average.

Every student who has completed the exit Bible Knowledge Test has improved. This is one measure we use to evaluate our programs to ensure we are continuing to fulfill our mission.
