Palomar Medical Center becomes the first public health system in San Diego County to offer a robotic surgery program

Patient beds go high tech monitoring patients without the discomfort of being hooked up to medical devices

Each patient has his/her own medical record which is displayed on the wall in the room while each visitor has his/her own wrist band which is worn to effectively guide the visit while in Palomar West Hospital

• Advanced Robotics• Communication & collaboration tools• 3D medical imaging• Nearly all aspects of a patient’s stay including ventilation,

air conditioning, lighting, security, fire safety, digital devices and signage all on one network

• Visitors are guided through Palomar West by bracelets on radio frequency and sensors that enhance safety and security through patient tracking

• Acuity adaptable rooms and cross discipline interventional procedure/operating rooms

At Palomar West, all building, communication, IT, and clinical systems will be converged into a single Cisco Medical-Grade Network

Nearly all aspects of a patient’s stay including ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security, fire safety, digital devices and signage

These will be monitored and managed via applications running on a single network freeing up clinicians to focus on providing quality care

Fugazi, N. (2008, February 25). Palomar West hospital in second life. Retrieved November, 7, from Your 2nd Place Website: http://www.your2ndplace.com/node/926.

One network is used to manage nearly all aspects of patient’s stay

Page 11: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

Operating rooms at Palomar West include advanced robotics and functional imaging systems which are capable of supporting medical procedures which include radiology, cardiovascular surgery, urology and gastroenterology

There is an advanced surgical cockpit where the surgeon can manipulate robotic systems remotely while assessing vital signs and imaging information (Fugazi, 2008)

Page 12: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

The one network system allows smooth patient and clinician communication

An example would be that a radiologist can locate a specialist and contact them on their phone, laptop or PDA and initiate a desktop collaboration session to review and consult each individual patient scan images via communication tools

(Fugazi, 2008).

Communication and Collaboration Tools

Page 13: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• Advanced Robotics• Functional imaging systems• TelePresence (where a virtual receptionist greets

guests)• Tracking systems

Software

Page 14: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

RIFD-enabled bracelets not only track patients but could automatically guide them to the appropriate areas of the facility based on what kind of service that they are scheduled for

An example would be for a patient having surgery could automatically have the hospital elevator land on the correct floor based on the information that is programmed into the bracelet

New, Highly Advanced Software

Page 15: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

The first anxiom applies to the system by focusing the technology to assist patient’s and clinicians by allowing combined communication and collaboration to improve time management and quality of care

The second and third anxioms may not be effective since this new hospital is still under construction and has not housed any “live” patients. We can only depend on the second life simulation and users opinions from the simulation

Usability of the software evaluation

Page 16: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• A virtual receptionist greets visitors and leads them in the right direction while visitor wrist bands also help to effectively guide them throughout the facility

• The computerized charting system at Palomar West allows information to be shared, documented and reviewed by a multi-disciplinary approach

Information system and how it works

Page 17: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

Review of information summaryNew information systems

not only enhance the hospital stay of the patient but also helps the visitors to quickly find friends and family, eliminating stress and frustration

Allows employees (as a team) to use the newest, most efficient software available to deliver the most effective care to the patient

Page 18: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• Faster and clearer communication between disciplines• Elimination of paper charting system• Enhances and encourages patient independence• Wireless room setup where procedures can be done

effectively at the bedside• Improved confidentiality by keeping an electronic

patient chart in the patients room• Nursing advantage of newest technology to improve

patient assessments by specialty beds that closely monitor each patient while automatically uploading the information to the patients bedside chart

ADVANTAGES of Palomar West

Page 19: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• Elderly patients unfamiliar with new technology based care

• Virtual tour guide as opposed to real live person for feedback and information

• Unfamiliar non-traditional hospital setting• Unavailable teaching resources for learning of new

technology system for employees• Employees unwillingness to learn new and improved

higher technology system to better the patients care

DISADVANTAGES of Palomar West

Page 20: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• Private patient information is harder to access and is not easily accessed by unauthorized personnel

• Having robotics surgery –vs.- a real live surgeon and accidents that may resolve from this

Legal/Ethical Issues

Page 21: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

• Nurses must have a basic computer knowledge to be efficient in this high tech environment

• They must also be open minded and be willing to learn the new system

• Nursing acquired skills and documentation

This is the professional nurse competency

Page 22: By: Amanda Napolitana & Jennifer Beals Palomar West- Hospital of the Future

Functions and responsibilitiesThe informatics nurse (IN) is responsible for the

skills, knowledge and competencies when working with this trend. She/he must have an interest in the field

The informatics nurse specialist (INS) is responsible for obtaining a graduate degree in this field of informatics or a related field and is then considered a specialist in the nursing informatics

Publishers.

The ultimate goal of Palomar West (the hospital of the future) is to provide direct and indirect patient care with new high-technological advances in the healthcare system while monitoring and managing applications to run on a single network to provide patients with the best quality care possible
