Devices that are on even when off waste energy andaccount for 10% of your electric bill. Put chargerstogether on a power strip and turn it off while youreaway. Unplug unused refrigerators, toasters, coffeepots, blenders and cell phone chargers.COST BENEFIT: Most people use their chargers only5% of the time they have them plugged in, wastingboth energy and money. Unplugging unusedappliances can reduce the phantom energy use in yourhome and save you up to $170 a year. Kitchencountertop appliances alone, when unplugged, cansave the average family more than $80 a year.BARE FACTS & STATS: It takes a tree-packed forestwith an area equivalent to 500 soccer fields to absorball the carbon dioxide produced by mobile phonechargers that are left plugged into outlets. From becomegreen.info, brought to you by Half Price Books.

The Rainbow Center for
Communicative Disorders, founded in 1976 and incorporated as a not-for-profitorganization in 1977, was established for those withdevelopmental disabilities who needed a moreintensive therapy program within an academicenvironment.
Beginning with three children, the day school nowbenefits over 60 children with Autism, DownSyndrome, Cerebral Palsy and/or other communicationand/or behavioral disorders.
In July 1996, the Rainbow Center expanded to includeday habilitation programming for adults withdisabilities too severe to function within a supportedemployment or sheltered workshop setting. DayHabilitation and day care for adults over age 21 isknown as Rainbow Options and currently serves 60adult clients.BVK provided a $500 donation to Rainbow Center

CAPA
BVK Coordinator: Ray Van Jones
CAPA, the Child Abuse PreventionAssociation, helps children and theirfamilies overcome the traumatic effects of child abuse, especially in child molestation. CAPA also provideseducational programs designed to increase awareness ofabuse and how to prevent it as well as providing case
management and other support services to help createstrong families and decrease the chances ofabuse/neglect.
Nationally, over 2 million reports of abuse or neglectare made each year, and 1500 die from their injuries.Every day, across the country, the very people childrenrely on for protection and comfort subject them to abuseor neglect. Children in our own community face thesesame risks. In Missouri, there are over 60,000 childreninvolved in the child protection system each year.
Approximately 10,000 of those children are confirmedas abused or neglected.
25 - 50% of all children will experience some form ofabuse during childhood. One of every three girls will besexually abused before the age of 18; and one out ofevery five to seven boys will be sexually abused by 18.Only a small percentage of child abuse is ever reported.CAPA helps families with the legal process andprovides support for families involved with the KansasCity area courts. At CAPA for every $100 spent on prevention education,
$3,600 could be saved on treatment for one abusedchild.BVK provided a $100 donation to CAPA in 2008.

Founded in 1971 as N.E.W.S. (NeighborhoodEcumenical Witness and Service), a project of threeneighborhood churches in the Northeast Kansas Cityarea and initially provided a food pantry, counseling, etc. As requests for shelter increased the MethodistBishop was asked to support a shelter. After a $1.5million capital campaign, the shelter was moved froma four bedroom house into a 30,000 square foot formerdormitory. In addition to safe shelter, the clients also
receive food, personal care and clothing items, therapyfor the women and children, day care services, outreach services, court advocacy, case management, and health care advocacy etc.
In support of NEWHOUSE, the Blue Valley
Kiwanis club hosted a Mothers Day Baby Shower
on May 10th at HyVee on Noland Road & 40 Hwy.
Shoppers were encouraged to donate purchased
baby care products and cash for needy families.
The BVK volunteers collected over $300 worth of
baby items and $76 in cash. The donated items
were then presented to a representative fromNEWHOUSE Shelter at BVK's May 15th meeting.
