Our metaphysical focus makes the Denver show amust, since it is the nation’s largest venue for minerals, crystals, gemstonesand jewelry (other than the February shows in Tucson), and its timing makesit a perfect buying opportunity for the holiday season. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, thelargest trade show on any kind on Earth, will beheld in late January through mid February of2005. Over 5,000 dealers will connect withover 100,000 buyers in over thirty separateshow venues. Over a billion dollars is estimat-ed to change hands during the course of thisgigantic and unique show, which features theentire gamut of the world of stones, from theindividual rockhound selling the treasures hemined himself to world-class diamond traders.
The metaphysical component of the Tucsonshows has been growing since the early 1980s,when the energetic qualities of crystals began tobecome widely known. This became a bonanzafor mineral dealers, and the impetus for a whole
new vector of the jewelry industry––metaphys-ical jewelry.
Although dealers who count metaphysicalstore owners and New Age collectors amongtheir customers can be found sprinkled through-out the many Tucson show locations, the oneshow which offers an entire section devoted tothe metaphysical market is the AKS Gem Showat the La Quinta Hotel. This two-story hotel islocated on the “strip” of trade shows along theI-10 access road in central Tucson. The firstfloor is a straight gem and minerals show, withdealers from Brazil, Pakistan, India and theUSA. The second floor, dubbed the New AgeProducts Show, is filled with dealers offeringcrystals, gems, jewelry, books, clothing,
incense, healing tools, sage, music, drums, can-dles and other products of interest to both NewAge and traditional gift and jewelry stores.Now in existence for over seven years, the NewAge Products has become a destination for vir-tually all the metaphysical buyers who come toTucson, as well as many mainstream shopperslooking for the unusual. More Tucson Show NewsAtrium Productions has moved its show
from the Pueblo Inn to the Tucson Expo Center,away from downtown and near the Holidome,Gem Mall, Intergem Michigan Street andTucson Electric Park Shows. This area has seenan increase in new shows over the past yearsand now rivals downtown as a major show hub.
The Pueblo Inn will still host a gem show,managed now by new hotel owners TucsonWest Hotel Associates.
The Best Western Executive Inn has alsochanged ownership, and Martin ZinnExpositions is moving his show Smuggler‚sInn. New owner Sudhir Shah will be hosting anew show at the hotel. The second floor will bereserved for buyers only, and Mr. Shah is nego-tiating for more parking adjacent to the hotel.Exhibit and room pricing remains the same asthe 2004 Zinn exposition.
The Vagabond Hotel, home to Zinn’s fossilshow, has closed and is rumored to reopen asan assisted living facility. Most of thoseexhibitors are moving to the Ramada onFreeway, just north of St. Mary‚s parallel to I-10. The ClarionHotel will also host another of Zinn’s ArizonaMineral and Fossil Shows.
Trade show promoter Danny Duke, partnerin Intergem, built a new show building onMichigan Street, between GLDA’s Holidomeand Gem Mall shows. Final touches were addedas exhibitors set up. Parking is abundant, mostexhibitors are indoors and bathrooms are easyto find. Mr. Duke predicts that this will be avery successful location next year.
GLDA is leaving the Radisson downtownfor the new Marriott Starr Pass Resort, Hoteland Spa. The new high-end facility is a fewmiles west of I-10 on Starr Pass Blvd, the sameexit as the La Quinta show. Parking is under-ground. Buyers will find themselves travelingmore widely around town, since their primeshows, the AGTA, GLDA and GJX are nolonger all in the downtown area.
GJX now manages the Radisson show inconjunction with their “ultra structure” pavilionacross from the Convention Center. Theseshows are wholesale only with a focus on gemsand jewelry.

crafts will be relocating again in 2005. If you’re look-ing for traditional Southwest inlay designs, visit thisshow next year. Most jewelry is one-of-a-kind. Consultthe 2005 Metaphysical Guide to Tucson magazine forthe new location.
As for show growth, Tucson Electric Park (TEP)wins the award hands-down. If you are a potentialexhibitor and do not mind using tents, this show bringsin the customers. Plenty of parking is available, andthis show is a natural stop when you’re travelingbetween downtown and the Holidome/Michigan Streetarea.
The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society retail show atthe Convention Center was the busiest of 2004.Shoppers were frenetically spending money and retailexhibitors appreciated the profit margins. Manyexhibitors finished their Tucson sales at this retail showafter closing elsewhere. Ticket prices, though only fivedollars, keep the “flea market” crowd out.
The Bead Renaissance Show in Tucson has movedto the Pima Air & Space Museum, Hanger #4. Ninetyexhibitors have signed up and there will be glass bead-making demonstrations during the show along with pre-cious metal clay and wire wrapping.
Lastly, if you are looking for unique gemstone carv-ings, the Manning House Show was impressive.Located downtown off of I-10, the exhibits have an artgallery atmosphere. Show promoter ElizabethBeunaiche has considerable marketing savvy, filling aunique Tucson niche.

reaching vistas and disturbing revelations asJoseph Chilton Pearce’s The Biology ofTranscendence. In it the author takes his readeron a tour which begins within the human nervoussystem and goes to the brink of our present under-standing and beyond. Pearce asks the question,“Why, with a history so rich in noble ideals andlofty philosophies do we exhibit such abominablebehaviors?” His answer encompasses the realmsof brain, mind and heart, culture and society, reli-gion and spirituality. He reveals Nature’s awe-some plan for humankind, as well as the conse-quences of the fall into lower consciousness thatstill rule our world today.
One of the author’s revelations concerns theheart and its intelligence. Everyone knows thatthe heart has always been the metaphoric home oflove and the seat of the soul, according to ancienttradition. Pearce shows us that we actually havean additional “brain” in the heart (the heart itselfis about 60% neurons) which connects directly tothe emotional limbic brain and prefrontal lobes,and which exhorts us to behave in ways whichbenefit not only our individual selves, but ourentire milieu. Thus the heart is the home of com-passion, the universal, the divine. Aside from and illustrative of the author’s the-sis, The Biology of Transcendence offers a feastof intriguing information. Pearce explores the“eureka phenomenon,” showing how knowledgecan come to us “out of thin air” like a bolt oflightning, and hinting at the idea that our brainsact more like radio receivers than thought facto-ries. If we can learn to attune ourselves properly,there may be no limit to what we can know.Pearce also shows how the torus-shaped electro-magnetic field of the heart extends beyond theboundaries of our skin intertwining us with otherpeople, our planet and the universe. January of 2005 is the scheduled publicationtime for the long-awaited Book of Stones, a meta-physical pictorial encyclopecia of the crystals, miner-als and gemstones most important for those who usestones as spiritual talismans for self-healing, medita-tion and spiritual evolution. This book, co-authoredby Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian, with contri-butions from several other authors in the field, aims tobe the diginitive book for crystal-lovers. It combinesthe scientific data, folklore, mythology and intuitiveinformation about stone properties with vivid colorphotographs of each of the 250+ stones which theauthors have selected. In the words of RobertSimmons, “Our book doesn’t cover every mineral thatexists. What it does is select from the mineral king-dom the most significant ones for use by people whowant to work with the beneficial energies of stones.The fact that we have purposely left out stones thatare not useful or are nearly impossible to find meanswe could offer greater depth of information and morecolor pictures than would otherwise have been possi-ble. Ajoite is a blue or blue green copper silicatemineral. It is named after Ajo, Arizona, where it wasfirst identified. It is a rare mineral, and is most fre-quently seen as an inclusion in Quartz. The most
beautiful and plentiful Ajoite specimens in Quartzcrystal points came from the Messina Copper Mine inSouth Africa. In addition to Ajoite, some of thesecrystals contain Hematite, Limonite and/or Papagoite.Another small discovery of Ajoite in agatized Quartzwas made in Zimbabwe. As of this writing, both ofthese finds are exhausted and the only Ajoite in themarketplace comes from old stocks from the twoAfrican finds.
Occassionally, Ajoite forms within Quartz inbright turquoise blue shapes that are said to look likeangels. From some of these, feathery threads of purecopper emanate in patterns suggestive of wings. The“Angel Wing Ajoites” are some of the most avidlysought specimens of all.
Other unusual Ajoites include a very few druzycrystallized pieces discovered around 1998 inZimbabwe. From this same find came rich blue andblue green agatized Ajoite. Whereas the MessinaQuartz crystals mostly contained small spots of pureAjoite, the agatized Quartz displayed much morecolor. Some of it was pure enough to be made intofaceted gems, cabochons or beads, and some of thelarger pieces were used to make exceptional Ajoitespheres.
Ajoite is an important metaphysical stone, and ismuch sought-after by crystal lovers. Its energies areemotionally soothing and healing, and many peoplereport that Ajoite connects them to the heart of theEarth itself. On several occasions, I have seen peoplebreak into tears the first time they hold a piece ofAjoite. Ajoite is believed to transmute negative ener-gy to positive energy, and to relieve unhappiness. It isa stone of feminine empowerment, and activates thethroat chakra.
Naisha Ahsian:“The frequency of Ajoite suc-cessively activates the throat chakra, third eye, crownand etheric chakras. This is one of the highest stonesof angelic communication that I have yet found. Phenacite is a beryllium silicate with a hardnessof 7.5 to 8. It is a rare mineral, especially in well-formed crystals with transparency. Its crystal systemsis hexagonal (triagonal) and it often crystallizes inshort prisms. However, Phenacite varies greatly inform from one location to another. In fact, its name isderived from the Greek word meaning “deceiver.”This is because of its appearance, not its energeticqualities. Strombolite is the name for a variety of spurrite,with a hardness of 4 to 5. It crystallizes in massiveform and is found in blocky chunks ranging frombaseball to boulder-size. The color ranges from gray-ish purple to deep purple. Old fracture lines in the
stone are often filled with white Calcite, giving theimagery of “lightning bolts.” The only known loca-tion for Strombolite is New Mexico.
