COMPETITION RULES:

NC Classes. These are NOT competitive, notes will be given but no marks or grades.

1 Entries must be made on the official Entry Form An Entry Form is included in this syllabus, and photocopies will be accepted. The Form(s) must be returned, fully complete and accompanied by the correct entry fee, on or before 14th February 2012. Please make cheques payable to „ Buxton Music, Speech & Drama Festival‟. Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted. No entry shall be valid unless accompanied by the appropriate entrance fee. The Executive Committee reserve the right to refuse any entry.

2 No solo competitor shall be allowed to take part more than once in any one class.

3 OWN CHOICE CLASSES –

Own Choice Class entries will not be accepted without a declaration of the own choice piece.

Own Choice classes (inc. Recital Classes) competitors shall not choose Test Pieces given in the syllabus for other classes and must abide by their choice, as stated in the Festival Programme.

Competitors shall not use the same Own Choice piece in more than one class.

If an Official Accompanist is required, one copy of the music must be received by the appropriate Competitor‟s Secretary by the date noted in Rule No 1.

For Instrumental and Vocal entries - no entry will be accepted without the music. For Speech and Drama entries - no entry will be accepted without the full details. One copy must also be provided for the use of the Adjudicator prior to competing. Unauthorised photocopies will not be accepted. Own choice pieces shall not exceed FIVE MINUTES duration per piece except where otherwise stated in the class.

4. RECITAL CLASSES

(i) Classes 308, 316, 453 (Junior Recital Classes) Each entrant will be required to sing/play/speak a varied programme not exceeding TEN MINUTES duration. There will be a minimum number of 3 entrants for the classes to proceed. (if a class was cancelled, entry fees already paid would be returned)

(ii) Class 500 will be limited to 8 entrants, each performing a programme not exceeding FIFTEEN MINUTES duration. All performances will be adjudicated. The Executive Committee reserves the right to cancel this Class if insufficient entries are received (in such an event, entry fees already paid would be returned)

5. The Executive Committee shall decide the order of performances in several classes. 6. Whilst certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, irrespective of the number

entered in the Class, trophies and medals may be withheld if the standard of performance does not merit presentation.

7. The Executive Committee reserves the right to appoint additional or alternative

adjudicators in any Class. 8. In all Classes where an age limit is stipulated, each competitor must be within the age

specified on the date when the competition takes place.

9. The prescribed composer of the music shown in this Syllabus shall be used by all competitors. If an incorrect composer or author is used, the entrant will not be placed but may be adjudicated.

10. Competitor‟s tickets will only admit to the competition(s) in which they are taking part, and

to those parts of the hall reserved for the competition. They must be produced when demanded and are not transferable. NOTE: Teachers with school choirs and competitors‟ own accompanists will be admitted free. Parents and chaperones shall pay for admission.

11. Choirs (through their conductors) and any other competitors selected to take part in the

Evening Concerts must exchange their competitors‟ tickets for evening tickets (obtainable at the desk) and be ready to go on platform when called upon. Conductors of choirs are responsible for the members of their respective choirs being fully acquainted with this Rule. Evening tickets admit only at the specified entrance and to the seats in the hall allotted to those taking part in the session.

12. Winners of first prizes in certain classes must repeat their performance at the evening

concert on the date of the competition. These classes will be marked on the timetable sent to entrants and in the final programme.

13. The use of any video or sound recording equipment is strictly prohibited. ENTRANTS – PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING NOTES Choirs and instrumentalists who require a „warm–up‟ room should notify the Secretary, who will endeavour to obtain one, but this cannot be guaranteed. The Secretary will be pleased to assist any competitor having difficulty in obtaining a set piece. (N.B. Competitors may use any available edition of the set pieces listed). All entry forms and queries regarding entry forms must be addressed to the appropriate Competitor‟s Secretary. Please do not telephone after 9.00pm. The Committee has made a provisional decision about who will perform in the evening concerts, but lack of entries in some classes may mean a change in the programme content. A final programme will be included in the official programme, and a copy will be sent out with competitors‟ tickets. Important note for entrants /parents/ guardians/ teachers/sponsors

You will see that entry forms for both single and multiple entrants now carry references to the Data Protection Act 1984, and „Unincorporated Members Club‟. The reference to the Data Protection Act 1984 is to ensure that any or all of your personal details are not passed on by us to third parties. In order to operate a festival in a manner which brings its data within the „Unincorporated Members Club‟ exemption, contained in the 1984 Act, all entrants to a festival must become members of the festival. This means that those who sign the entry forms will be invited to attend the next Festival Annual General Meeting

(but attendance at such a meeting will be entirely optional).

To assist our excellent accompanists in their preparation and in giving their best support to all performers, we ask you to co-operate with the following:

The accompanist‟s copy of your music must arrive with your entry form or at the latest by 14 February 2012

You may send a photocopy but:

1. one original copy must be available on the day of the festival. 2. the print must be clear and fully show both ends of the stave including all time signatures,

key signatures etc. 3. the pages must be sellotaped together ***, edge on, in page order. No staples! 4. please put your name, and class number clearly on the front of the music, and

title/composer, if it not immediately obvious (eg if you are doing the middle movement)

*** scotch/magic/invisible tape is best. Use 3 pieces on the back, at the top, middle and bottom (like hinges), rather than al the way down the back (which make it unwieldy) If the music is 8 of more pages long, it is suggest you make it into a booklet using A3 paper with print on both side, so it turns normally like an original copy. This can be done easily enough on a photocopier.

On the day, be sure to tell the accompanist the right tempo!

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

BUXTON MUSIC SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

1. PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF ORGANISATION.

(a) To promote the study and practice of the arts of Music, Elocution, Acting, Dancing, Literature and similar arts in all their branches, and the cultivation of public appreciation of those arts by means of a competitive Music Festival in Buxton annually or at such other times as may be decided. (b) The organisation of concerts, lectures and other meetings of an educational nature complimentary to the Music Festival. (c)To do all such other lawful things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects.

2. THE FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT.

The Buxton Music Speech And Drama Festival, which is run by volunteers, will be held in such halls and rooms that are deemed satisfactory for the purposes of performance. All such venues will be covered by their own Health and Safety documentation checked and verified by the committee.

3. TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY?

This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the Organisers prior to their arrival at the festival. This should be done by contacting the address or telephone number on the enclosed letter. In recognising the needs of children from minority ethnic groups and children who are disabled, the festival actively seeks to meet needs notified to the festival by parents/guardians/carers and/or teachers.

4. FESTIVAL PERSONNEL

Festival personnel are recruited on a voluntary basis. All volunteers used are on the personal recommendations of present volunteers and committee members, and all will be fully briefed on the Child Protection Policy. Personal details of all volunteers are kept. All volunteers will be clearly identified by a festival badge, and those in overall charge of performance areas will bear a large, clearly identifiable card. The chairman holds ultimate responsibility. All problems and situations will be dealt with sympathetically and will be recorded and dated. Only adults with enhanced disclosure will be asked to deal with young people and vulnerable adults on a one-to-one basis.

5. PREPARATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE FESTIVAL.

Committee members and volunteers are not empowered to act in „loco parentis‟. Teachers, parents and carers are to retain at all times responsibility for the safety and conduct of competitors in the festival. Teachers, parents and carers not in attendance at the festival must ensure that responsibility is lodged with a suitable adult.

6. PERFORMANCE AREAS AND CHANGING AREAS.

There will be no specified changing areas. Public toilets are available at venues, but not supervised. Stewards will be present in all performance areas but will not be in „loco parentis‟ however; they will be alert to situations. Teachers, parents and carers will be responsible for all competitors.

7. PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOTAPES and PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY.

In all performance areas no photography, sound recording or video recording will be permitted. For press photography verbal permission witnessed by two members of staff will be sought. Staff has the authority to delete any images taken by any means. No images are to be transmitted in any way.

8. THE LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE THAT SUPPORTS THIS POLICY. The Children Act 1989; The Police Act 1997; The Data Protection Act 1998; The Human Rights Act 1999; The Protection of Children Act 1999; The Criminal Justic and Court Services Act 2000.

9. POLICY REVIEW.

The organisers will constantly review their policy, improving and enhancing it as necessary. In doing this they will look to The British & International Federation of Festivals for support, and that body in turn will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and Arts Council of England policy guidelines.

COPYRIGHT, PHOTOCOPIES and DOWNLOADING MUSIC: Copies of own choice works for the Adjudicator Published music is subject to Copyright law. In the Music Publishers Association revised Code of Practice on copying copyright works, the following concession is made for copying own choice pieces from volumes only, for use by the adjudicator or for practice by the Accompanist. Other items must not be photocopied without the permission of the copyright holder in each case. “When an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different works and which is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of an adjudicator at a competition or festival provided that the competitor or participant has already purchased his/her own printed copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the administrator of the competition or Festival immediately after the event.” A photocopy may be sent for the Accompanist for practice purposes and this must include the whole of the music including time signatures and key signatures and must be in a playable condition (see Appendix at the back of this syllabus). Competitors are advised that the above permission applies only to copyright holders who are Members of The Music Publishers Association (listed at the back of the Code of Practice leaflet obtainable from the Association at 3rd Floor, 18 –20 York Buildings, Strandgate, London WC2N 6 JU). It is the competitors own responsibility to ensure that they seek permission to copy direct from any copyright holder whose name does not appear in the MPA list. Downloaded music may be used only in the following circumstances - most official sources will have a note that the use of music downloaded from their site is permitted. If such permission appears, the competitor should also print off and submit with their entry the permission statement that accompanies the music. All performers using music from the shows in current production are subject to copyright law. Songs from shows in current production may be sung as a concert item, i.e. with no costume or movement without need for copyright permission. Where movement or costume is included in a performance copyright permission is required and the Festival Committee accepts these entries on the basis that the appropriate copyright permission has been sought. Performers or teachers with queries on how to obtain copyright permission for performance items should contact Festivals House on 01625 428297 or 01625 611578 before making their entries. [e-mail: [email protected]] SPEECH AND DRAMA: Copyright Rules. Buxton Festival is covered for copyright of 'Own Choice' poetry, prose or dramatic monologues under the terms of the paragraph below, and entrants need not contact publishers for permission to perform any item which falls in these categories. "Having entered into an agreement with the Authors' Licensing and Collection Society to cover copyright on all works performed, we have included 5p in the entry fee charged for speech and drama classes to cover this. Competitors and teachers will wish to know that this 5p fee is being levied at all Speech and Drama Festivals affiliated to the British Federation of Festivals across the UK, and that our living authors will be directly reimbursed for the performance of their works as a result of this."
